Thank you for sharing. Makes me homesick. Although am in the Orlando area. You make me feel like I don't have to be out of touch with what is happening at home. Keep up the wonderful job. Have told all my friends about your page.

Aloha,
i just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the radio-hawaii music page. my wife and i lived on Kauai for four years. (1989 - 1993) and have sincerely missed the beautiful islands of Hawaii' ever since. the music brought back some fond memories and once i finish my M.S. at SDSU (5/96) we hope to return. any hints for a soon to be graduating (M.S. in Info Systems) haole as to where the local job leads will be?
great music, great web page!

I am using a SPARC and Solaris 2.4. I am enjoying your programming. I was privileged to attend Internet 95 in Wakiki Beach last summer, and ever since have missed the beautiful islands. Keep up the great work!

Rabbett,
Thought I would drop you a quick note and say hello and thanks for the Internet accessible Hawaiian music.
I'm a former islander that has migrated to Boston, MA. I came here in 1983 but returned to the islands to visit my parents yearly. Unfortunately, my parents have also migrated to the east coast and now I doubt I'll be returning the islands any time soon.
The Hawaiian music/Radio show reminds me of where I grew up, which I enjoy it very much. I remember listening to you on 98 Rock. Which radio station do you work for now? I also used to work in radio back in Hawaii. I started at KNDI, then moved to KORL and final finsihed up at K59 filling in where ever there was a spot to fill.
Keep the music coming.
Bret
Rabbett,
Excellent Real Audio feed. I am using a 28.8 modem connected to local server in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Awsome is all I can say about IRH. Sitting next to my computer is my old shortwave radio I used over 20 years ago when I was in High School. This takes me back to my DX days! Just think, I am hearing your broadcast without shortwave skip, co-channel interference. Back then I used to send away for QSL card from the stations that I would listen to on shortwave. Hey, maybe you should send out e-mail QSL cards. (G).
Thanks for the Audio Stream,
Terry Wey

Aloha Rabbet,
I couldn't believe I ran across this while "surfing". I'm sitting here in Annapolis, Maryland getting very homesick listening to you. I was raised in Hawaii. I graduated from Kailua High School (Oahu) in 1961. During high school I had my own radio program on KLEI located in the Kailua Shopping Center. Went to the mainland (USC) to college and returned in 1965 to work on KTRG radio and tv, (five days on tv, weekends pulling a radio shift.) I'm now a producer/director with an advertising agency in the Washington, D.C. area.
Getback to me and I'll share some interesting times growing up in the late 40s and 50s in Hawaii. My step father still lives in Lanikai but is not in good health.
Got to go ... a party is waiting.

Hi RAbett:
The RA site is really coming on strong. I should have known you were a Radio person. Cool! I'm still trying to get my ISP to go RA and may have to move the decoweb elswhere in the next few months to make it happen.
What's the story with RA 2.0. A 28,8 modem is becomming standard but newbies will still be using 14,4 for the next year or so. I'm looking into ISDN for my next jump.
My server stats are getting a little better and I find over 85% of my visitors are using Netscape or Moziac variant. Do you know what your broser stats are like?
Your improved (non graphic) tool bar is a good addition. Good show!
Best of luck in '96. I think the real $ are going to start to flow this year. I'm getting ready for for transaction processing and will be using the Netscape secure server, and you?
Ciao for now. I do like to visit you and leave the player running when I click out. A nice reason putting up with Windows after all.
Ciao
I just discovered this page. It really made me homesick for the islands. Very nice!

Like it cuz. Over on O'ahu, kinda nice to surf the net and find local kine music here. Good job and Much Mahalos........
Just a short note saying "Mahalo" for making local music available to local folks far, far away. Your Holiday broadcast brought tears to my wife's eyes, thinking about Christmas in the islands.
We really appreciate the local news and music, and hope you keep on!

Ok braddah, sounds pretty good. I just listened to the hour long program and it wasn't bad at all. I guess the sound quality was just as good when compared to other RealAudio programs.
The only thing was that the sound sorted of faded right after C&K's Sunshine Love was done playing. Keep up the good work!

Have about $158.00. How do I fly to, enjoy and eat well, where you are now. Would be willing to sleep in late, clean my own plate, etc. Have a Phd. in Biology, MS in Computer Sci. Have survival skills in the area of Franco-American & Speghettios. Willing to negotiate your costs for putting up with me. Able to work (groan) my a** off for the costs. Listen to your program(s) ALL the time.... BTW, the sound is great re RA 2.0..
Harry................
HEY DUDE! CHECKED OUT YOUR WEB SITE TODAY FOR THE FIRST TIME! SOUNDS WAY COOL!!!!!! I didn't get any busy signals, either. I'm using a 28.8k modem, if that helps you any. I didn't know you guys have been "on the net" since June. Keep it up.
The 32 bit ra2.0 is great. Fidelity is an order of magnitude better than 1.0.
IRH gives me nonstop chicken skin. I lived in HI for 15 years and never stop missing the Islands.
My Internet bill will go through the ceiling. Keep it up.
BTW, the fireworks brought back wonderful memories. My wife was trying to tell my mainlander kids about it and they just weren't getting it. Now they do.

Just realized it's been a year. I first saw H-4 at the SBH Conference last January, and I was really excited about it then. A few months ago I moved to the mainland, so now H-4 is a necessity. Omedetogozaimasu and Mahalo.

I am listening to your test in Carmel, CA., another paradise in the USA.
The quality of the transmission was remarkably clear compared to version 1. Voice and music are actually tolerable, perhaps even good. How about another vocalist?
Thanks for your effort.

RE: Internet Radio Hawaii - Music Page
What at great idea!!
I'm in Los Angeles, on a 28.8 SLIP connection, using a 486DX2/66 Sound Blaster, Windows '95 and I just d/loaded the 2.0 Beta RealAudio. It sounds like AM, but, what the hell, it's good enough until I get a ISDN line (or cable modem)!
I don't have time right now to check out everything on this page, but it's in my Bookmark file, and I'll be back often, I can assure you!
This concept adds a new dimention (at least for me) to Web browsing... I think it's great that you guys are at the "bleeding edge" of this technology - It means that you'll get the audience, and what an audience it could be!!!
Mike.
It is neat to listen to Hawaii while sitting here with snow all arround and a low of -20 celcius last night. By the way I am in Kitchener Ontario, and if you don't know that's Canada! Thanks for bringing a little warmth to this nite... it sounds pretty good for a computer.
The pages are great! especially the music.
Please encode another Keali'i Reichel song only in RA2.0! He is the best!
Keep up the great work. We miss the islands...

Okay Rabbett,
I knocked your Real Audio 1.0 shows awhile back because
I couldn't tolerate the quality. Well, I just played your 1st
music to cruise by encoded in 2.0. What a difference! I
enjoyed your show very much and will listen to all of them. If
you don't mind, I'll point to your shows from one of the music
pages I maintain. The URLs are shown below if you want to check
them out.

I'm sitting here at my computer in Washington, DC in the middle of a very large snow storm. There is at least 3 feet in the front yard with new snow falling. Internet Radio Hawaii is EXCELLENT! I've been to the North Shore of Kauai 4 times and miss it all the time. Your music brings me back. I have the Music to Cruise by playing in the background as I do my regular work. How about some 'live' broadcasts? That would be the ultimate! Keep up the good work. I am a dedicated listoner!

Dear Rabbit:
Hello from Winnipeg, Canada, Sound file was audible - although seemed a little broken up (but interesting and creative) One file said I req'd the latest RA app. I am not sure what this meant. Hence, I played AN IRH file. Please email to above address. TIA

Hey Rabbett,
I was out "hangin ten" on the ole Net again tonight and could not resist visiting your website again. RealAudio never sounded so good! Sorry I could'nt remember the correct color of the water tower at the Shaboo Inn (it really has been a long time). Your program is really cool and reminiscent of a few trips to your south sea Paradise.
Aloha & Mahalo!
Jim Cipollina
Well, your site is one that I'd like to see added to daily. It's the next best thing to looking at the setting sun on Aloha Tower, or down slope Maui on the 8th green.
The music goes well with my copies of Aloha and Hawaii magazines. Being gone is not any easier after 10 years. I also long for my couuntry home in Volcano.
Keep up the current music because that the thing we read about first before we can buy it. Getting Hawaii kind music out this way to the cold hard NewEngland isn't easy. I did enjoy the Treasures Series.
Thanks again.

Dear Rabbett & whoever responsible for I.R.H,

Hey Rabbit,
Just tried your RA 2.0 test and it came through great! Best sound I've heard over the 'net yet. Just like am radio! Keep it coming!
Keith
Hi Rabbett. You wanted to know how 2.0 works? Well, it blows away the previous version. The voice and music is vastly improved. I am impressed with the new upgrade. The only bug I can think of is that the sound gets chopped off for about a tenth of a second every once in a while. Though that could be the connection. I don't know. E-World? Must be using a Mac. Good move! I'm using a power mac myself. Keep up the good work. Later.
cool song!
I'm in N. CA, using 28.8k hookup. Came through pretty clear, with a few wavers. I like your idea
Dear Rabbett,
The music sounds excellent!!! Almost FM quality. Oh, by the way, I'll take a stab at the answer to the question you asked during the session. The Shabou Inn (I'm not sure of the spelling) is located in Willamantic, Connecticut and the featured landmark was a silver water tower with the name painted on it. Let me know how I did, it was a long time ago. OK?

* I have been told by others that a faster chip is necessary for 2.0 on boxes like yours...someone related to me that 486's weren't zippy enough to handle 2.0 and that a pentium was required...being a mac guy...I am not sure...it works fine on my Power PC....Rabbett;)
Hello Rabbett,
Just a note to let you know that the real audio files of Hawaiian news are working quite fine here in Connecticut on my Mac Performa at 14.4 baud. Kinda neat! Temp is 5 degrees today.

I'm a happy lissener to your music at the other side of the world with a 14.4 modum. I hope to upgrade to 28.8 the next year. I tune in very often and hope you will stay on the net with your music, especially the real HAWAIN music.

Hello Rabbet,
At this time, (while writting this message), I listen to your broadcast. I listen to your great music IRH Dace Party. The songs that you put and the way you put them are great!
I have a trick to listen to your broadcasts: I log in the IRH page, and then I load the .RA file and after that I minimize the RealAudio player. That allows me to listen to your broadcast while browsing the internet, writting messages, transfering files or run other windows or dos programs while listening to your broadcast!
I'm located in the City of Montreal in Canada. That's 6000 miles away from your station!!! :-) That's what I call the "Power of Telecommunications".
Island of Hawai: Paradise... Wonderful weather... Sun... Hot Hot Hot (as the song),... The Pacific ocean... temperature: 87oF
City of Montreal: Cold weather, lots of clouds, Cold Cold Cold -30oF...
By the way, your signal is Very strong, No errors at all, Fast and reliable transmission, and the sound is comparable to a Strong AM station. frequency response: 60Hz - 3kHz, Noise floor: -50dB Excellent! My soundBlaster 16 is connected to my stereo system and I enjoy your broadcast that came from Hawai, that crossed the Pacific Ocean, that crossed the US, that crossed Canada to arrive at Montreal. (Near Atlantic Ocean.) Keep the good work and don't forget that I have my ears on your station!!!
Here in Montreal Canada, I have a radio show every Sundays from 6pm to 12 midnight in Greek for the Greek Community. And I'll broadcast a International show (in Greek) in the internet. I'll be able to reach Greeks far away were no Greek station exists. I began to set it up. I'll use TrueSpeech audio. I can't use RealAudio because my computer is a 486sx2/66 without a Math Co-processor. The RealAudio encoder requires a math co-processor. And the other option that I'll go with TrueSpeech is because it's free! 1 hour of audio consumes 3.6 Mb od HD space.
My home page is set up already: http://www.infobahnos.com/~dimitri/home.htm
It's not ready yet because I'm waiting for My Internet Provider to configure the server to recognise .wav dsp encoded files.
PS. On your latest broadcast you said: "It's Tuesday January 2nd 1995..." I'll take this opportunity to wish you a Happy new Year. Don't forget next time: we are in 1996! ! ! Bye and keep up the good work, say Hi to everybody from Me (Jimmy) from Montreal Canada. and I have my ears on you!
Hey Rabbett,
Works fine! Sounds Great! (But my computer's breaking a sweat.)
I've been listening for a while on RA 1.0, and your show brought a nice relaxed island feel to my room here in New Jersey. The audio quality was poor, but I got the general feel of the music. It was sorta like listening to the entertainment from the hotel next door.
Well now, its like walking right in to the show, paying the cover charge and sitting down. No, the sound's not perfect, but much better.
The hard part is that my computer (Pentium 90MHz, 8M memory) seems busier, and whenever I ask it to do anything while the audio is playing, it interupts the audio. Before it would only interrupt it sometimes.
Anyway, I hope you dualcast in V 1.0 and V 2.0 for a while, since not all of us have the equipment to listen to 2.0.
Keep it going!

Rabbett;
Files sound great, but was botherd by continious breaks in the file, packet delivery was indicating as high as 45% loss factor. I am running Win95, 16meg ram, 486DX2-66 Tristar Computer and a 28.8 modem, ATT Dataport. While the file was playing, stereo quality was obvious.
Happy New Year,
Jack
--Sounds like a connection problem, as you'll read we have even made Switzerland in good quality!
I am listening to your site using RA2.0 from Springfield Il. Keep up the great work. The sound quality is fair with some break up but clear enough to understand and enjoy the news and talk features. The music quality is pretty good. It is incredible that I can get your programs here in Illinois and feel like I am almost visiting Hawaii. It snowed 6 inches here yesterday and the high was 20 degrees, tomrrow the wake up temp is predicted at 7. It is 130Am here so the web traffic low I hope the quality is as good during the day. What does Da Kine mean anyway? Keep up the great work, I really have only started to explore your site.

Hi Rabbett! I just discovered this h4 internet stuff tonight. Oh, my name is Tiffany Lum (I'm on my roommates computer right now) and I'm a freshman at the university of washington. I graduated this past year from Kamehameha Schools and I lived in Hawaii all my life. I miss Hawaii so much but these neat Hawaii home pages have helped me get over some of my homesickness. I just taped all the KCCN jingles from my room. Technology is amazing. Anyway if you've got the time, email me at tanuki@u.washington.edu You're doing a good job so far. Keep it up. Aloha! Tiffany
Dear Rabbett,
Ran your Teating (12/29/95) clip with 0.1% lost packets.
It sounded great - like AM, not like SW (RA 1.0).

Wow! I thought the old real audio was pretty neat, but this is almost as good as my actual radio! Best of all, I can listen to IRH and work in telnet windows without seeming to affect the sound quality.
Comes through quite well on my Powermac. Keep up the good work!

Love your site and makes me miss Hawaii! I have the same problems with RealAudio 2.0 that you mention. The first download remains closed, and I have to manually hit the play button. The second download does not displace the first one, and hitting play still plays the first selection. They also do not appear on the "Open Recent" menu.

The site is too cool...Used to stay in pearl city in da late 70's & early 80's. Sure is cold here in St Louis... Waz checkin out da recipies but couldnt find kaluaha pig (sp). Sure loved that pig. IRH is awesome cant wait for the real audio people to get version 2.0 for win 3.1 and 486 dx. But i just enjoy listenin to the other RA filesfor now. Keep up the great show and pages. Just wish I could be there but this is close.

Rabbett,
I'm listening to Gabby and he sounds great! The audio quality is much better than with the previous version.
I'm having a small problem with the Beta RA player in that it sets its process priority to HIGH, thereby slowing everything else on the system to a crawl. (I'm running Windows NT 3.51, 486/66, 28.8 modem, 28MB memory, Netscape 2.0 Beta 4 (32-bit), 32-bit RA Player Beta 1.) But I think this is not *your* problem!

Hey they sure gound good hr with the new raplayer for 28.8! I love the music too. In fact I went to some other web pages and my player dont play any of the 28.8 stuff. just the slower ones. But, ur page plays great hawaiian music! Good luck and again nice page u have here!

Hey Rabbett!
Thanks for the Hawaiian site! I've been on the mainland for thirteen years now. Sure is nice to hear some of the old tunes, and to hear what's going on currently in the Hawaiian music scene.
I camd to Hawaii in 1959 to work on the sugar plantations. I cut my eyeteeth on Lucky Luck and Aku. Some of your old music sure brings back memories. (Sure would like to hear some of Melveen sometime; Is she still down south?)
My wife is a Kauai girl, so we get back once or twice a year. When on Oahu we stay in Kaneohe. I'll be retiring shortly, and when I do we will be right back there. Until then, keep up the good work!
You've done a great job on your site. I connect at 28.8 kb and it is good. Not high fi - but usually quite good. I'm especially interested in what you are doing, for my intent is to work the net once I retire. You've really found a great niche.
Keith
Hello Rabbett!
I just installed RealAudio on my Mac here in Seattle and everything works great! As a local boy from Hawaii I miss the Hawaiian music - but now it's just a click away. Keep up the great work! (I can't wait to show my friends this site!)

I'd been hoping to hear Ku`u Home`o Kahalu`u--I was pretty stoked to find it on the jukebox--I can imagine it would be a popular request from those who wake up all the time with that 'last night I dreamt I was returning' feeling.
Take it easy, and thanks again...

Wasup Rabbett,
I'm glad this IRH web site is here. I am originally from Waipahu but now live in the Mainland. I like to "hear" the local news better than just reading it off the Internet. I was wondering though how come the news is not updated more often. I think it's only once a week or something like that. Is there any plans in the future for more frequently updated news via "Internet Radio"?
Thanks in advance!!!

Programmes received well, although sound quality tends to fall off after about four or five minutes.
We've been working on a couple of international/intercultural awareness programmes with young people in Glasgow and this sort of input is worth a hundred books.
Now that you're able to send us your news, how abut sending us your weather?

Nice Hawaiian music. Better than shortwave.
I feel closer to my real home already.
You're in my bookmark file buddy.

I love this web site. I'm from Duluth, GA and have visited the Hawaian Islands... One suggestion: have 5 to 10 of your hottest local hits downloadable as .wav files so we can listen to them in all their glory. I have over 4 gigabytes in storage space and would like to store some of these Island classics on my system.
Again, great job and look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
jeffskop@intergate.net
GREAT stuff....don't quit.. My wife and I are frequent visitors to your great Islands. The music puts us back and starts us dreaming of a new trip tahat we are contemplating to your shores. Thanks again for the tunes and the mood.

Hey Rabbett, I love your weekly programs. They are the best escape I have found. I live in LA and surf the net a lot to escape via cyberspace but Oh so much better with your music in the background. I would love to send a check for $25 or so but I need a snail mail address. Keep up the good work.
Aloha,
I really think this is probably the best thing that Hawaii has to offer on the WWW. I am building a web page for the RainBird (Windward Community College's yearly literary magazine). I think it important for the world to see how diverse and sophisticated Hawaii is. I am having a problem though with RealAudio. I can only download files (and paly them), they won't play in real time. Pixie Net doesn't seem to help. Any ideas? Once again great job on your web site! Mahalo JWG (p.s. I remember the rabbet & abbott show in the mornings)
Rabbett:
I'm just trying out this Real Audio and I am very impressed with your Internet station. I look forward to checking in to IRH and enjoying the talk and the great music.
I've been a Telecommunications Engineer for over 45 years and this Internet, Audio, and all the Multi-media is really something. I'm retired now due to a stroke. So now I get to use facilities that I've been building. I Engineer the physical layers not software.
All the best to you and all at the IRH station, from up here in getting colder .... Fairbanks, Alaska.

Cool stuff brah...
I'm using a Reveal setup with their sound blaster semi-compatable, and everything works fine. Got a strange look from the wife, but she's used to strange things happening on the computer after I get done.
Wishing I was back in Kauai..... Next year will be trip 11. Can't wait...

I just listened to your Dance Party. Thanks for advances this new media form. Sean Pease - Dallas, Texas
P.S. It has been about 11 years since I've been there, but I think that your state is #1 in beauty. Would love to return soon.
Aloha
Way cool, brah!
I get to hear a little of Hawaii even though I live in Denver now. I hope you can stay online forever.
I'm listening to your broadcast via realaudio on a pentium 75 uslogic "Computer city's brand" YOU SOUND GREAT, some times it gets garbles, but mostly when I'm taxing the motherboard. I'm here in Denver Colorado, a student at the Dental school, born and raised in Honolulu I really miss the islands, but thanks to you I can still keep in touch, Much mahalo and aloha

Hi Rabbett... Greetings from Toronto Canada. I listen to you every morning and wish there were more to listen to. Most enjoyable way to start my day. I enjoy the real Hawaiian music more, than any of the other that you play. You have an excellent sense of humour to go along with an excellent program. keep it up.
Hears listening to you.

Hey Rabbett,
I was in Kauai this time last year and had the best time of my life. It was the first time I ever surfed without a wetsuit and Kauai is truly the most beautiful place on earth.....that I seen...... I have a surfing page for Northern California that you might want to check out at http://www.arc.org/who/mark/basurf.html. I'm coming back to Kauai this Christmas for 10 days and can't wait to feel Hawaiian lifestyle again....the city sure can grind you down.....Alright, mahalo for the page (I found it through the RealAudio page) and I'm sure I'll check your show when I'm back............
peace,
Mark
A lot of fun. I didn't have time to listen to the whole show. The fidelity is almost there. Maybe these RA guys will be able to tweak it even further.
It's a great concept (from one who has been there 5 or 6 times) I hope you can make some money at it!
I'm a little sad to notice that you took down Music to Cruise By #4. It was my favorite one and I play it over and over whenever I'm on the Net. Would you consider putting it back up. Tanks 'ah?
Cool accompanyment to surfin' the Web.
I enjoyed testing RealAudio on your site from Seattle. Since I downloaded the player today from the RealAudio server, yours was the first out of 10 tries from their sample list that actually worked! From what I've heard, it would seem the stated spec of 4K frequency response is what we get. That would be quite listenable if it wasn't for the estimated 10 - 30% distortion. I accually thought I could distinguish what sounded like a comb being fragged accross violin strings as a sax solo (I could tell by the style of playing). You have a lot of selections and that is nice. Most sites only have one.
Many of those I've tried offer a "sampler" where the RealAudio is supposed to play several file consecutively. It's never worked yet. I never get beyond the 1st sample.
There are two companies that are interested in having me develope Web pages using this technology if I'm convinced users won't be put off by it.
Thanks for offering this new technology in a way that works. Many do not so you're doing something right.

Wow, what a way to hear Hawaiian music. I just hooked up my creative labs sound blaster and downloaded one of your section and really enjoyed it. It's a great cultural experience and it makes me miss Hawaii. We were in Kauai once. Good job.

Hi Rabbet!
To introduce myself, I work at Apple in a marketing group. My specific function is to help market and promote the Apple Internet Server, and other internet-related products and technologies.
Was just surfing Brad Schrick's pages today, saw your "new" listing, and took a look. What a great site! It feels like fun, even through the cold electonics of the medium, the "feel" jumps right out from the first page. Congrats!

Eh Rabbett!

Hi Rabbett
This is great .I've been on the net for about 5 months and this is what I've been
looking for. I was at Hickam AFB last year and was able to
enjoy some good hawaian music on FM but that doesn't do you
any good stateside.
I used to sit at the edge of Pearl Harbor just behind the
Officers Club and watch the sunset. I'm looking forward to
getting back to the Hale Koa Hotel. I found the place to retire
when I was there.
The shows are great and the music superb. Keep it tradition
al. I'll be listening hope to meet you when i return.

Rabbett,
Listening to Gabby Pahinui while typing this. Makes a Kailua boy really
homesick. My family still lives in the Grove off Oneawa Street. I
couldn't believe it when I saw Kailua on the tag. When you talked about
the moon coming up over Lanikai, I recall with fond memories the moon and
sun rises I've experienced at Kailua Beach.
Our family moved to Kailua in 1948 from Honolulu and I lived there until
I went to college in 1962. Much Aloha for the place in this heart.
Was last there last summer and this past Christmas. We're planning to go
over again soon. I would like to meet you when we get home. We have
printing and book customers on Oahu, so our trips are work and pleasure.
Mahalo. Keep up the good work.
Aloha

I enjoyed immensly your songs from this cold Quebec, please add some more,
I realy enjoyed heavenly Hanna.

Works fine on my 486DX2-66 using a Supra 288 V34 modem, SoundBlaster-16ASP and Labtec CS1400 speakers!
Good fun and informative!! Keep up the good work!

IRH, it sounds good here in Finland, Europe. I would'nt have
believed, with a radio(wave?) I couldn't have done this.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Hi Rabbet
I wanted to thank you. This is really cool. I was working on a flower
farm at Hana a couple of years ago and have missed the music ever since
I went mainland again. Now I'm in Austin Texas studying African
History.
I especially like your juke box 'cause I can listen while I read about
archaeology in Kenya.
I have to wonder: Do you get paid for this in some way! It's so
awesome--I didn't think things like this were free.
Dear Rabbett,
Mahalo nui loa for starting something great like this! I moved to Japan on business,
so I have been listening to your programs here in Japan. Although the sound quality is
not so good, I can still understand what you are saying well. In fact, compared to the
World Radio Network on Internet, your files sound a lot better. I hope you will
continue to bring us the lastest of the land I love. Is it possible, by the way, for
you to get some local news from local newspapers and TV news broadcats? This way, you
can have a wider coverage of current affairs in Hawaii.
Yours sincerely,
Aki Shimura
Hi!
Just wanted you to know that someone in Finland has been listening to
your radio.
rgds Olli
I'm listening to your IRH program as I type this. What a fantastic
service! Though not kamaaiana, I worked in Hawaii in the early 80's and
still make it back a couple times each year.
Lately I've become much more interested in Hawaiian music and your IRH
program is a great way to sample it. Unfortunately, the names of the
songs zip by too fast for me to catch them. I hate to ask for more, but
if you could post a list of songs, artists and albums on each show it
would be a big help! Perhaps you could even get Tuan or one of the other
CD stores to sponsor it and allow "on-line" ordering of CD's. I'd be
willing to pay a small premium for the convenience.
I wish you the best of luck in finding sponsors. If it helps your
marketing, this IRH listener does purchases items via the Internet and
would be support sponsors that offer Hawaiian products other than cheap
trinkets. (I'd like to see CD's, art (including photos), calendars, real
Kona coffee (not the blends or flavored variety, preferrably green so I
can roast it fresh myself) and, especially, island foods. Anyway to ship
lychees?
Thanks again...

I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy this page. I am turning
into a Gabby fan. 3 weeks ago I didn't know who Gabby was. :) Say, one
quick question, once an older show falls off, is it gone forever? I
really liked one of the older shows that is gone now and was just
wondering. Anyhoo, keep up the good work, and I'll be "tuning" in alot
when the ground here in Ithaca NY is covered with snow. Hopefully, that
cool Da Kine (SP?) music will keep us warm! Thanks for the great site!
Jay Mendelson AKA Wolf
The Labor Day show was great! I really enjoyed the selection of local music. I'll be back for
more of that.
The sound quality was about a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. I'm running a 386 DX40 w/8Mb of RAM.
I'm using a SoundBlaster card. I found that turning the volume down on the speakers (hardware)
and turning the volume up with Real Audio (software) iimproved the quality greatly. The music
suffers the most.
Until next time. Thanks for the treat!
Jeff
Cruisen around on a Sunday Morning and found your show.
Love Maui and Hawain music. We will be back Christmas time
Can you play some Teresa Bright. I have her Painted Traditions
tape and play it all the time. Hawian Music selection
here in the Bay area is minimal.
I'll check in from time to time.
ps the new Real Audio is much improved over the first
version, doesn't pop. Still needs a way to go compete with
FM but is as good as AM

To you and all your friends that helped put together this H4,
hotspots, IRH... mahalo. I downloaded the RealAudio and played
the jukebox. Now I know how much I lost touch of the Islands.
Noticed a lot of the music has raggae rythm...wow. But the
traditional hawaiian music brought chills and sweet memories
back.
I've only took a couple of steps in your works. I'm going to
have fun all night long. Thanks!!!
I just returned to the mainland after a short three year stay
in Hawaii. Not much of the local music is played here (is that
why it's called local!) and I did not pick up a very good
selection while I was on Oahu. I would like to request two
items if I may. The first is by Loial Gardner (sp?) and though
I don't know the name of the song, it is about a young boy in a
football game (based on a true story). The second request is
for the brothers Kazumero (sp?), any title.
I have used IR a couple of times and have found it to be a
great feature, especialy since it is the only place where I can
(easily) get Hawaiian music. I'll tell my friends about it!
Jim
Rabbett,
Just wanted to say it's been great visiting I R H. Being in Chicago,
the general attitude is nowhere the same as it would be for you out
there, but having some friends from Hawaii, I have seen the comfortable
friendly attitude I've always seen in the islands. I don't know how you
did it, but you've put that into your web site, and your real audio
selections. While I type this I'm also playing from your jukebox (thank
God for multitasking). Kudos again, keep it up. I will come back!!
David

Ok! So now I've seen the coolest radio on the planet... What's next?
Where's the live video feed to go with it?
Just Kidding!
Actually, I'm very impressed with your site and the material you are
presenting! Keep it up! This is like AM Radio must have been back in
the days when people used crystals and earphones to find stations. There
isn't a lot out there yet but what you can find is exciting!
Later...
I am most interested in how your real audio is going because I am trying
to set up a site on my homepage. I am concerned about sound quality and,
if you wouldn't mind, would appreciate any tips you have. My friend tried
a test with an 8 bit 22khz file and it didn't sound too good. Sometimes
your audio wavers a bit, - reminds me of the old days when the tape
machine motors were on their last legs!! ahh the memories!!
My site is for the Glass Orchestra - 1/2 ton of glass musical
instruments. We toured thru Honolulu in 1986 and I vowed to return one
day. I believe our address is: http://io.org.~rixax.Glass.html Comments
appreciated!
Cheers,

Its hard to find slack key here in toronto so I love your special on the
Master.
Greetings ...
Just visited your site via a Macintosh Performa 600-CD running MacWeb
1.00A32 ... and I have a request!
Back in the late 70's, there was a jazz fusion group out of Hawaii called
Seawind ... they did two albums, if I recall correctly, one of them called,
strangely enough, SEAWIND. I forget the other ... anyway, if you could get
some of their tunes up on your Server, that would be great! Titles which
come to mind are THE DEVIL IS A LIAR and LOVE IS HERE TO STAY ... though I
could be wrong about the titles; they could just be words from the chorus.
Anyway, keep up the good work ...

Hi I'm on the Hilo Side. Sunny Today. Nice site you got.
Why don't you use Interlink Hawaii? Isn't eworld a longdistance
call?
Well, anyway nice site.
Oh and when you play the realaudio clips with a 14.4 are you
supposed to get breaks in the sounds like every 4 secs?
and also after about 45 secs into all the audios i listen to it gives me
a messagew saying bad data or something for the last 30 secs?
oh well agan nice site.
Hi! I've just come back in my office and has been a real pleasure
to hear your "Aloha". What a great place you're living in! Hope I'll

Bye bye!

you are doing a great job!
Looking forward to hearing more

Halloo Hawaii,
Just a note to let you know I connected true and clear from Bar
Harbor, Maine. I listened to your first "Music to Cruise By" a couple of
weeks ago and I'm looking forward to listening to others. I just listened
to the August 9 news. It will be nice to connect to sunny Hawaii when
we're not so sunny here.
Thanks
Ann
Yeah - I like the speaker!
Hey thanks for the Jawaiian!
Thats something we dont hear much here if florida!
Rabbett- I publish Mahalo Air Islander magazine to give visitors and
residents some insight to the latest music and art in the islands and I
am very impressed with your Internet projects. I would like to write
about you and the way in which you are promoting Hawaiian culture.
Mahalo for everything you are doing,

ALOHA,
This is unbelievable. I am on the net two months, installed
real audio two days ago and through the ra newsgroup I found your
URL. You are coming in loud and clear in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
That's about at the western end of lake Ontario. The software installation
was a piece of cake and I had no busy signals in connecting to you.
I am using a 486-33, WFW 3.11, Netscape 1.0, TWSK 1.0, 14.4 Sportster,
and inexpensive speakers. I was listening to your news broadcast
while flipping through the pages, and the only thing I noticed that while
the graphics were loading intensively the broadcast cut out for a few seconds,
no more than 2-3.
I am a windows user but I found no problem loading the pages,
regardless what my colour monitor is set at.
Keep up the good work and I'll be back to visit often.
LES
I agree with the palm trees icon and that this station makes me homesick
for a place I've never lived but do hope to visit again.
By the way, I've tried the RA encoder on a WAV file I made from a CD and
the sound is essentially the same as I get over the net...so presumably
we're talking compression here.
Also BTW for the person who doesn't like the Blue; I don't believe I see
Blue when I use Spry instead of Netscape...but then, it's hard to keep
track.
Keep that music coming; liked the comedy too.
Aloha Rabbett,
With all the problems I've been seeing people report with RealAudio, I
thought you might like to hear a success story. It doesn't make me special,
maybe just lucky.
I'm running a 486DX2/66 with 8M RAM. Monday morning I downloaded the
RAPlayer, installed it, and it worked perfectly. I went looking for sites.
Luckily I found yours and have enjoyed all I've listened to.
The reason I say luckily is that I was raised in Hawaii but left there in
1968. I've only been back once since then but I do miss it. Your site takes
me back home. The people who say you can't go home again aren't on the
Internet!
One thing I was wondering is if you ever have deepsea fishing news
(tournament results, record catches, etc.) on your sports news. My brother
runs a charter fishing boat out of Kailua-Kona (the Lei Aloha). This is the
basis of my interest.
Well, I'm sure you don't have time for my ramblings with all the E-mail I'm
sure you get so I'll just say Mahalo for a great site.
Dawn
Hey, thanks for the slack key guitar on the August 6th show; IRH sure is
responsive. Looking forward to hearing more.
Reading you loud and clear in Portland, Oregon. Aloha!
Hello Rabbett!
Just wanted to drop a line saying how much I'm enjoying your IRH
broadcasts (netcasts?) The music of Hawaii is as special as the place
itself--it's nice to be able to hear it from my home in Northern
California.
One question, if you don't mind: I'm setting up my own WWW site and am
thinking of using RealAudio to record some of my own songs. How big is a
five-minute sound file? Just curious--I won't be using a RA server, so
whoever wants to play the file will have to download the whole thing to
play it.
Last but not least: how about some John Kiawe next time you feel like
playing some slack key? (Unless it's already in show #4--I haven't
listened to that one yet...)
Cheers,
Jay Hipps

Dear Rabbit,
Just want to tell you that even here in Holland (EUR) RaPlay works very
well. I try it for the first time today.

Congratulations and go on with the good works.

Rabbett-
T'anks, eh, brah, fo' the music!! I moved back to the
mainland three years ago, and have missed my Waokanaka
Street home terribly. I used to do overnights at the
now-defunct classic rock station "105.1 The Fox." I'm
now at an adult contemporary station in Asbury Park
New Jersey (WJLK-FM 94.3). Three songs I can't get out of
my head are "Harbor Hustle", "Red Rose Hula" and
Palani Vaughn's "Kawika: The Greatest of Descendants".
If you saw fit to include any of these on one of your next
shows, you'd help me with my melancholy reminiscing...
Thanks much--no ka oi!!

IRH was my second Real Audio site visit. It's great -- and I was pleased
to see a Macintosh in your studio. Keep up the good work!
rabbett,
i very much enjoy your radio service on the internet. being a
shortwave listener with a fried radio, i have found another source to sample
views and opinions from around the world. regarding your real audio icon, i
would vote for the ra speaker icon, too. i have in the past seen something
similsr to the other icon used for other audio files but the ra speaker is
unmistakable. the quality of the broadcast is on the whole very good. the
audio is strong, clear and understandable with no lost audio errors. on the
whole irh is one of the better quality stations for reception which i have
heard. i am very interested in listening to your broadcasts on a regular
basis since i have never heard a hawaii station on shortwave. good luck and
congratulations on an excellent station.

Hello Robert Abbett at http://www.hotspotshawaii.com/IRH-home html.
Your Internet Radio Hawaii (IRH) RealAudio music program is a joy to
behold and a delight to listen to.
The past couple of weeks I have listened to your programs on my 1990
Gateway with a Cyrix 486DX25-50 upgrade microprocessor that had a
5 year old serial card in it with a 16540 UART and a 9600 Baud Cardinal
modem. It was not AM quality audio, but if one listened carefully,
one could make out about 75% of your speech and indeed recognize the
music as Hawaiian. I use Netcom as my Internet provider and Netscape as
the www browser with RealAudio.
Today, I upgraded the modem to a US Robotics 28.8K Sportster and the
serial card to one with a 16550 UART. As you know, the 16550 has a
16 byte FIFO (cache)/buffer built in to it. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY
MAKES.
The faster modem helped, but the new UART brought IRH in "loud and clear."
LOST went from around 40-45% to only a few % when intitially connecting
and LOST IN LAST 30 SECONDS went to zero % from about 40%. Quality was
every bit as good as AM radio. This is incredible over the 6000+ mile
path between my home in Florida and Hawaii.
I doff my hat to you and the boys at RealAudio.....congratulations. The
music on Internet Radio Hawaii is the best of all the RealAudio stations!
Some of the other RealAudio stations are downright terrible....hopefully
they will learn how to program RealAudio as well as Robert Abbett does!
Best wishes, Bob W4UCH
Hey, great site. I've been crising around checking out the RealAudio
radio stations and found you. I'll be putting this in our next

I think you should use the loudspeaker-icon, the other one looks like

Rabbitt;
I thought I'd take the time to drop you a message while the cruisin .RA
is playing. Great site and I really enjoy the visit. I may never enjoy
the experience of traveling to Hawaii, but this is the next best thing to
it. This is one of the best RA sites I've listened to, so, job well
done. Well back to some terrific listening. Have a good day and I wish
could sit on the beach with a laptop and be listening. :o))

I vote for the Icon that RA suggests. It is distinctive and easily
recognized. I have only had RA for a week or so, and just found your page
tonight - - really enjoyed it! Keep up the good work. Makes me homesick
for the Islands.
Hi Rabbett! Does'nt sound too bad at 19.6K.
Slight background "swirling" noise and the
occasional hiccup. But not bad. Keep it up
on the edge.
Hank.... :)
Dear Rabbett,
Just listened to several of your programs and enjoyed them very much. I
just wanted to tell you about the reception. I am using a Pentium 90
over a dial-up PPP running today at 14.4 (its a 28,8 USR Sportster)
through clark.net here in Maryland. The sound card is a Diamond. The
results: a little bit garbled and low-fi, sort of sounds like shortwave.
ABC news sounds the same so its not just your setup. No interruptions,
however, and definitely worth listening to. I congratulate you on your
programs.
Sincerely,
Shea Rutstein
Hi. I think the RA icon looks much cooler than the one you are using
right now. Just found your site through the RealAudio Partner Site list
and love your site! Now what I need is a faster modem so that I can
listen in on your site and still surf the web at a reasonably fast
speed. BTW, keep up the good work on your Music to Cruise programme.
Regards,
Melvin
I've always seen the speaker in the bubble, but the square one looks better.
I just found your site and it brings me good Hawaiian memories. I'm sure glad we'll be visiting
again soon. Keep up the good work.
Albert
Really enjoying listening to IRH. I'd love to hear some Raymond Kane,
as well as other traditional and modern slack-key guitar. Thanks in
advance and aloha from Portland, Oregon.

It's absolutely magnificent. Thanks. IRH brings back memories of my
wonderful trips to Hawai'i. I'll be checking for new music often.
Rab..
Great job mate, listening to you loud and clear in Jakarta Indonesia.
Keep up the good work and I'll be looking forward to checking in

Hi Rabbett
Just came across your web page (from Real Audio page) and thought I'd drop you a line. I was in Maui in April and miss the surf, the sun and the people so your radio show is therapy for this misplaced Canadian.
Thanks again for the great pages and keep up the great work.
Do you do 'real' radio work in Hawaii?
M. Adam Foster
Wow! We really enjoy the Hawaii news. My wife and I are frequent
visitors (though not frequent enough) to Kauai, and plan to use your news
and info to keep us informed in the meantime. Keep up the good work -
RealAudio sounds great even through my el-cheapo Sound Source. - Rusty
Really enjoyed your "Music to Cruise By". Please post more!!!

Bravo!
Hi from Switzerland! I Really enjoy your shows from the other
side of the world.
Thank you!
Rene
Great Home Page and real audio is the way the net is supposed to be. I
listen to the music and work on the computer. I am a home based business
and this is great.
Keep up the good work.
Aloha,

Yo rabbett,
This site is awesome. It really brings out the local in me. I enjoyed
the music. I have one request. If it is possible, could you put the
song meha meha by the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau on the IRH. In my opinion,
this song reminds a lot of locals about hawaii and its white sandy
beaches. It is really great to know that you took the time to create
this site. Thank you (Mahalo)
Mel.
Hi
I'm sitting here listening to your first audio show here on the Internet
while I type this. OBTW, I'm in Melbourne, Australia. I wanted to
thank you and the site for making the RealAudio available. This is real
unbelieveable stuff.
I'm coming to Hawaii next month. This site and the music are really
putting me in the mood to see the sand, surf, and sun. Thanks again!!

I think you have really started something great here. Kinda like a
shortwave, on-demand radio show. I LOVE IT!
I would love to do the same thing here in San Diego. Not being in radio,
(got a face for it tho) it my not be possible without some professional
help.
Did you get some type of sponsorship to put this up, or did you do this
work all on your own? Either way, all the fame and fortune should go
your way! (that and $.50 will buy a cup) (ha) Seriously, great job.
A couple of notes... Can you add a link to cybercom or whereever to
download the real audio player on h4's home page? Alot of people are new
at this and do not have the ra player.
Also, is there any way to increase the fidelity? I estimate the freq
response is 600-5000. Don't know where the bottleneck is. Buffer size
may help though... If I can figure that out, I'll tell you.
It would be great to get it broader. Is there someway to save the ra
data, and play it back off line, or put the individual cuts up on the h4?
The jpg had better sound than ra, but no where near .wav file format.
Again, great job... loved the Hapa
Art
Yo Bra'
Cool stuff. I miss the Islands and this is great! Keep pumpin' it up:)
Robert,
I am in love with your web page! Now with real audio we can feel like we
are at home! I am very impressed with what you have done and keep up the
great work!
Thanks again for the great web site!

I LOVE H-4! Keep it coming! I listen to I.R.H. while I cruise the 'net. I look forward
to additional Real Audio Hawaiian music programs on H-4! Very nicely done!

Hello Rabbet,
Just thought I'd drop you a line saying how much I like your RA site.
Pretty funky and creative. I see your postings regularly on the RAPLAY
list and decided I had to check it out. Keep up the good work!

I like your page the way it is. Don't change your icon to the standard
RA type. That would remind me of the haole type music at other Web
sites. I'd prefer an icon my local style; maybe with an icon of a
coconut tree with music waves coming out of it.
If you check your logs, I'm here almost everyday. I can't get enough of
your music. I love everything by Robi Kahakalau even though I've never
heard of her. And the "Royal Hawaiian Hotel" is so bouncy and
tourist-ish that I can't stop listening to it. Find away to sell the
CD's you play!
If you can, update your show more than once a week!
very totally kool! i just got back from the big island, my friend mark
miller (graphic designer) lives in Kailua-Kona, and gave me the grand
island tour. another friend, spencer dennis, runs your local cable tv
channel (perhaps you know him as well).
it's great to hear the show.
i'm sure you're into the dancing cat catalog of CD's--leonard kwan,
sonny chillingworth, ray kane, etc.--all the great slackkey stuff.
maybe you could do a slackkey show. (perhaps you already have). anyway,
your show makes me homesick for a place i've never lived.
thanks again,
phil bunch

Hi Rabbit,
I love the shows! Just finished the July 10th show and now I'm
listening to The DANCE SHOW! Thanks, it's cool. The sound burped
a little bit, but that was when I was getting my email, otherwise my
14.4 modem delivered the sounds of Hawaii to Las Vegas as good as
or a little better than AM radio, but not quite FM. Peace, Pat...
Love the show. Sitting here in Cary (Outside Raliegh), NC. I was stationed
with the Army, flying CH-47's out of Barbers Point from 1978-83. Love the
Islands and wish I was back there now after hearing some of the radio clips.
Keep up the good work. Oh yeah - my vote is for the icon with the RA on the
bottom.
Aloha-
John

Hi Rabbett
Just stumbled across your page and had a listen. Very nice!
I was in Maui about 3 months ago and pine for the sunny shores of Hawaii
every day ( I live in Vancouver, Canada). Nice to find a Hawaiian page
with realaudio links.
Keep up the great work.

Hey Rabbit,
Sounds great...esp. when compared to other stations. BUT please
lose the blue dot pattern background on the page...way to rude first
thing in the morning. As for the realaudio icons...who really
cares...'sides, you're not using them as links anyways.
Keep it going...it's great so far. I'd like to hear some more rock
music though...maybe some local stuff?
So...when's the I.R.H. tshirt gonna be available :) ?
