** Wahine Sweep 49ers **
With astonishing ease, the UH Wahine blew out Long Beach State
15-11, 15-3, 15-6 in a Big West Conference volleyball match
before a sellout crowd of 10,225 at the Special Events Arena last
night. "Hawaii is a strong at all positions," said the 49ers'
lone senior Brita Schwerm, who was the lone bright spot for her
team with 16 kills. "They've usually been a very nonchalant team
and they have a more aggressive attitude now. It's a good team."
Good indeed. Paced by the sure hands of setter Robyn Ah Mow (39
assists) and the strong arms of Angelica Ljungquist (13 kills),
Therese Crawford (12), Joselyn Robins (11) and Jenny Wilton (10),
the Wahine (26-0 overall and 17-0 in the Big West) made short
work of Long Beach (18-8 and 12-5), who had defeated Hawaii in 13
of their last 15 meetings. The two teams will meet again tonight
before another capacity crowd.
** Saints March to 10th Title **
Kekama Akana found Kelii Kaanoi in the corner of the end zone on
a 7-yard halfback option pass with 37 seconds remaining to propel
St. Louis to a heart-stopping 14-7 playoff victory over Punahou
last night before a crowd of 9,114 at Aloha Stadium. With the
win, the Crusaders captured their 10th consecutive
Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship and a trip to
next week's Oahu Prep Bowl for a meeting with Oahu
Interscholastic Association champion Kahuku. Before the Saints'
final 16-play, 77-yard march, which included two fourth-down
conversions, the game was dominated by defense as both teams
struggled to advance the football. "We had to fight like hell
just to stay in it," said St. Louis coach Cal Lee. "Punahou
played a helluva game." Said Punahou coach Dan Morrison: "My
kids left their hearts out there tonight, just as I expected.
Credit a talented group of St. Louis players and coaches."
** Sumo Day 6 Results **

Kotonishiki

Western Athletic Conference football game at Aloha Stadium. The
game will be a reunion of sorts for UH assistant coach Ulima
Afoa, a St. Louis High graduate who went on to play and coach for
the Aztecs. Said Afoa: "I'll be a loyal (SDSU) alumnus when we
don't play them. But, the kids and coaches here take priority
when we do."

** Wahine-49ers Play Tonight **
The UH Wahine volleyball team will put its 25-0 record on the
line in matches tonight and tomorrow against Long Beach State
(18-7) at the 10,000 seat Special Events Arena. Tomorrow night's
match is a sellout and less than a 1,000 tickets remain for
tonight's. The matches will not only feature two great programs,
but two great coaches: Hawaii's Dave Shoji, the owner of a 578-
120 win/loss record in his 21 years as the coach of the Wahine,
and Long Beach State's Brian Gimmillaro, 298-85 in 11 seasons for
the 49ers.
** Sumo Day 5 Results **
Hawaii's Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) has sole
possession of the lead at the Fukuoka Grand Sumo Tournament in
Japan. The ozeki forced out Kenko (1-4) to improve his

at quarterback for the UH football team (4-5 overall and 2-4 in
the Western Athletic Conference). The Bows take on San Diego
State (7-3 and 4-2) Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Coach Bob
Wagner also announced that starting left guard Michael Peterson

surgery on his right shoulder, and that freshmen Steve Laulu and
Branch Nautu from Kahuku High have been suspended for
disciplinary reasons.

** Homegrown Report (Courtesy of Dennis Anderson) **
Vince Mane (McKinley '92) moved to East Palo Alto, Calif. in 1993
after graduating from high school and found not only a good
football program there at De Anza Community College, he also
found his dad, who had never met his then 18-year old son.
"Since then it's been nothing but blue skies for me," said Mane,
who has received football scholarship offers from several four-
year schools.
----
Several other Isle athletes attend De Anza: Jarrett Solomon
(Farrington '94) is a starting middle linebacker on the football
team and has earned second-team all-conference honors; brothers
Ray and Lance Wilhelm (Baldwin '94) are on the football and
basketball teams; Pono Aga and Joe Leifi (both Farrington '93)
are defensive lineman--football ; and Vivian "Love" Kalehuawehe
(Baldwin '94) is a standout pitcher on the softball team.

** Wahine to End Big West Affiliation **
The UH Wahine volleyball team (25-0) will play its final Big West
Conference matches tomorrow and Friday against Long Beach State
(18-7). The Wahine will join the Western Athletic Conference
next season ending their 10 year membership in the Big West,
where they have won five league championships. "With the WAC
growing stronger and expanding, we felt it was the right time to
come over and join our men," said UH assistant AD Marilyn Moniz-
Kahoohanohano. Friday's match against the 49ers in the 10,000
seat Special Events Arena is a sellout, and just 2,500 tickets
remain for tomorrow night.
** Hauoli La Hanau for Jaquias **
Hawaii surfer Kaipo Jaquias celebrated his 24th birthday by
capturing the Xcel Pro surf meet in 4- to 8-foot waves at Sunset
Beach on Oahu's North Shore. Jaquias, who on his first wave of
the final had a near-perfect tube ride that gave him a huge lead,
earned $3,000 for the victory. Kalani Robb finished second,
Todd Holland third, and Michael Ho fourth.
** Sumo Day 4 Results **
Attacking Terao with aggressive arm thrusts, Ozeki Musashimaru
(Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) won his fourth match without a loss
and shares the lead of the Fukuoka Grand Sumo Tournament with
two
other rikishi. Two grand champions, Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad
Rowan) and Takanohana, both won yesterday to improve to 3-1. In
an earlier match, Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) fell
to 2-2 after being forced out by Kirishima (2-2).
** Class of 91 Flunks **
The hard times for the 1995 UH football team can be traced to the
deterioration of its 1991 recruiting class whose members should
be fifth-year seniors this season. Of the 21 high school players
recruited five years ago, only two--Agenhart Ellis and George
Noga--are starters this season. Five flunked out of UH, four
transferred to other schools, three were kicked off the team, and
one "retired" because of an injury. All the others are still
with Bows as reserve players. "We've lost some players along the
way," said UH coach Bob Wagner. "It happens sometimes, and it's
not good."
** Big Man Signed **
UH basketball coach Riley Wallace announced that 6-foot-9 junior
college player Kelvin Anderson has signed a letter-of-intent and
will join the Bows next Fall. Anderson is averaging 15 points
and 8 rebound per game for McCook Community College (Neb.) this
season. "He's a slasher and an athletic player who can also
shoot it out from 15 to 17 feet," said McCook coach Trace Bevell.

** Fans Flocking to See Wahine **
With four home matches remaining, the UH Wahine (25-0) are within
range of becoming the first college volleyball program to draw
100,000 fans in a season. The Wahine have drawn 78,827 fans, an
NCAA record, for their 17 home matches this season, an average of
4,637 per contest. UH officials reported that approximately
15,000 tickets have been sold for the Wahine's two matches
against Long Beach State (18-7) on Thursday and Friday. Hawaii
has already clinched the Big West Conference championship and are
looking to finish the season undefeated and to earn a regional
host spot in the NCAA tournament.

While fans are swarming in record numbers to watch the Wahine,
Bow football rooters have diminished considerably. The football
Bows, 4-5 this season, have averaged only 30,279 fans for their
four home games in 1995. Last season, an average of 33,081 fans
turned out per game. In 1993, the Bows' per-game average was
35,631. Hawaii coach Bob Wagner had a simple answer for how to
increase attendance: "We just need to win more", he said. "When
we struggle, that's just not good advertising."
** Sumo Day Three Results **
All three Hawaii rikishi won on the third day of the Fukuoka
Grand Sumo Tournament in Japan. Ozeki Musashimaru (Fiamalu
Penitani of Waianae) is among a group of six wrestlers with 3-0
records after defeating Kotoinazuma (1-2). Improving to 2-1 were
grand champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), a victor over
Kotonowaka (1-2), and Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli),
who defeated Aogiyama (2-1). Grand champion Takanohana also

** Quarterback Derby Again for Bows? **
Who'll it be? Johnny Macon? Glenn Freitas? John Hao? Rodney
Glover? Such is the dilemma for UH football coach Bob Wagner, a
man searching for a quarterback to lead his Rainbows (4-5) this
weekend against visiting San Diego State. Wagner had hoped to
avoid the musical-chairs situation that occurred with the
quarterback situation last season, but a knee injury has plagued
Freitas and Macon, after a brilliant performance against Fresno
State, looked anything but other-worldly in Hawaii's loss to
Colorado State this past weekend. Hao and Glover, both seniors,
have seen limited time with the first unit in practice this
season and are unlikely candidates to step in. "We'll make a
decision which way we'll go later this week," said Wagner.
** Sumo Day 2 Results **
Only one of the three rikishi from Hawaii won on the second day
of the Fukuoka Grand Sumo Tournament. The victor was ozeki
(champion) Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae), who
improved to 2-0 by muscling out Mitoizumi (1-1). Meanwhile,
grand champion Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo) and Konishiki
(Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) both fell to 1-1 after dropping
their matches. Akebono stumbled and fell to the ring after
Takatoriki (1-1) side-stepped him while Konishiki was forced out
by Misugisato (2-0).

The UH-Hilo Wahine volleyball team yesterday received an
invitation to NCAA Northwest Regional. The Vulcans, 25-6 on the

** Wahine Capture Big West Crown **
The UH Wahine volleyball team earned an automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament by clinching the Big West Conference title with an 18-
16, 15-5, 9-15, 15-10 victory over UC-Santa Barbara last night at
Santa Barbara, Calif. With setter Robyn Ah Mow passing superbly
to the Wahine's Big Four--Therese Crawford (16 kills), Jenny
Wilton (15), Angelica Ljungquist (13) and Joselyn Robins (13)--
Hawaii, the second-ranked team in the nation, won its 25th game
without a loss this season. With the conference title in hand,
the Wahine will play their final four regular season matches with
goals of finishing undefeated and earning a regional host spot.
** Bows Blown Out **
Battling fierce 50 mile an hour winds and an even fiercer
Colorado State defense, the UH football team fell 22-0 to the
Rams yesterday at mile-high Fort Collins, Colo. It was the first
time since 1976 the Bows were held scoreless. Colorado State's
league-leading defense lived up to its reputation by limiting
Hawaii's spread-option offense to a paltry 126 total yards and
not allowing the Rainbows to cross midfield until the fourth
quarter. Meanwhile, the CSU offense churned out 423 yards,
running off 81 plays to the Bows' 48. The Rams improved to 7-3
overall and 5-2 in the WAC with the win. Hawaii, which returns
home to face San Diego State (7-3 and 4-2) next weekend, fell to
4-5 and 2-4.
** Sumo Day 1 Results **
The Fukuoka Grand Sumo Tournament got underway yesterday with
all
three wrestlers from Hawaii winning their matches. Using hand
thrusts, grand champion Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo)
defeated Kenko. Earlier, Ozeki Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani
from Waianae) forced out Tosanoumi, and Konishiki (Salevaa
Atisanoe from Nanakuli) topped Kitakachidoki. In a major upset,
Kotoinazuma threw down grand champion Takanohana, the most
dominant figure in sumo of late.
** Bow Hoopsters Victorious **
A Special Events Arena crowd of 2,834 watched the UH men's
basketball team overcome some early jitters to defeat Kilsyth of
Australia 92-73 in an exhibition game last night. Five minutes
into the game, the Bows trailed 14-9. However, propelled by the
hot shooting of Alika Smith (23 points), Hawaii caught up to,
passed, and pulled away from their Aussie foes. "Our guys were a
little nervous," said Rainbow coach Riley Wallace. "But we
settled down after the butterflies went away." The Bows will
practice for two weeks before their official season opener on
Nov. 24.

** Wahine Can Clinch **
The UH Wahine volleyball team is a victory away from capturing
the Big West Conference championship after defeating its closest
rival UC-Santa Barbara 15-7, 15-13, 15-5 last night at Santa
Barbara, Calif. "Our outside hitters had a tremendous game,"
said Hawaii coach Dave Shoji, who saw his team improve to 24-0
overall and 15-0 in the conference. The Wahine exploited a
Gaucho defense that concentrated on shutting down Angelica
Ljungquist and Jenny Wilton, Hawaii's biggest guns of late.
Leftside hitters Therese Crawford (14 kills) and Joselyn Robins
(11 kills) benefitted from the chink in the Gaucho's armor. UCSB
fell to 18-6 overall and 13-2 in the Big West.
** UH Hoopsters Begin **
Riley Wallace's UH basketball team opens its 1995-96 season with
an exhibition game against Kilsyth of Australia tonight at the
Special Events Arena. Two key players will miss tonight's
opener: shooting guard Tes Whitlock, the recipient of a 16-game
suspension for supplying false information to the NCAA, and
skywalking forward Justice Sueing, who must sit out one contest
for an elbowing incident in last season's WAC postseason
tournament final. What's more, 7-foot-1 Seth Sundberg, the Bows'
starting center, will see only spot duty because he is recovering
from a motorcycle accident. Wallace will send out a starting
five of Anthony Harris and Alika Smith at guards, Danny Furlong
at center, Micah Kroeger at small forward, and either Ales
Zivanovic or Eric Ambrozich at power forward.
** Prep Football Results **
Kahuku 33, Waianae 20: With their powerful running game operating
at near-maximum efficiency, the Kahuku Red Raiders thrashed
Waianae to capture the Oahu Interscholastic Association
championship before 8,966 fans last night at Aloha Stadium. Ken
Faavae rushed for 110 yards and Isaac Aalona added 123 more, but
it was Damien transfer Jason Keo who inflicted the most damage on
the proud Seariders. A senior tailback who led the ILH in
rushing last season, Keo romped through the usually-tough Waianae
defense for 279 yards, including a scintillating 89-yard TD run
in the third quarter. The Red Raiders earned their fifth-ever
OIA title and a date in the Nov. 24 Oahu Prep Bowl with the ILH
champion. "It doesn't matter who we play," said Kahuku coach
Doug Semones when asked if he preferred facing St. Louis or
Punahou, the two teams battling it out for the private school
title.
----
Waiakea 32, Waimea 20: At Vidinha Stadium, the Warriors advanced
to a Neighbor Island championship showdown against Maui High next
week by defeating Na Menehune last night on Kauai. Waiakea
scored in every quarter and were paced by running back Kalani
Kekauwela, who rushed for 103 yards, and quarterback Johnny
Young, who ran for two scores and passed for another.

The tourney berth is the Seasider's 11th in the last 13 years.
Currently ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, BYUH (28-1) will seek its
sixth national title. The 18th-ranked Sea Warriors (14-11) are
hoping for an at-large bid.

** Whitlock Suspended **
UH basketball player Tes Whitlock faces a 16 game suspension
because he provided misleading information to the NCAA.
Apparently, Whitlock provided false information when NCAA
officials queried him about correspondence courses he took while
attending Saddleback Community College in 1993. As a result,
Whitlock, a 6-2 guard who led Hawaii in scoring and was the WAC
leader in three-point shooting last season, is deemed ineligible
for the Bows' first 16 games. He also must perform community
service. Said Whitlock: "I apologize to the NCAA, the university
and to my teammates. I know my teammates were counting on me,
and I let them down. That really hurts. I just hope I can come
back after the suspension and help the team win games in the WAC
so we have a shot to reach our ultimate goal." Whitlock becomes
eligible on Jan. 18 when the Bows face Air Force.
** Wahine Can Clinch **
The No. 2 UH Wahine volleyball team (23-0) will win the Big West
Conference title by defeating No. 11 UC-Santa Barbara (20-6) in
matches tonight and tomorrow at Santa Barbara. "I think we have
more talent," said UH coach Dave Shoji, "but whether or not we
can win there twice is another story. Everything points to us
being favored. But the unknown factor is how tough they are
mentally." The match will feature a sister-against-sister
confrontation between junior back-row specialist Nalani Yamashita
for the Wahine and freshman Tania Yamashita for the Gauchos.
** Macon to Start Again **
Because regular starter Glenn Freitas is still hampered by an
ankle injury, sophomore Johnny Macon will start at quarterback
for the second consecutive game. The Rainbows (4-3) face
Colorado State (6-3) tomorrow (9:07 a.m. HST) at Fort Collins,
Col. Last week against Fresno State, Macon was impressive,
passing for two scores, running for another, and amassing 314
yards in total offense. The Rams, who lead the WAC in three of
four defensive categories, will present a much stiffer test for
the UH sophomore tomorrow.
** Mcdonald, Stevens Stride to Titles **
As expected, Punahou's freshman sensation Eri Mcdonald and Hawaii
Baptist's dominating junior Matt Stevens won the girls' and boys'
individual titles at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association
cross-country championship meet yesterday at the Waiehu Golf

** Crenshaw No Ka Oi **
Ben Crenshaw's dramatic 50 yard eagle pitch-in on the final hole
gave him a one-stroke victory and the $400,000 first prize in the
PGA Grand Slam of Golf yesterday at the Poipu Bay Resort course
on Kauai. Crenshaw, this year's Masters Champion, fired a 4-
under 140 for the 36-hole competition, a stroke better than U.S.

wake up and have nightmares about it," said Pavin.
** Preseason Hoop Predictions Announced **
Coach Riley Wallace's UH basketball team has been chosen to
finish seventh in the 10-team Western Athletic Conference in a
poll of the media who cover league hoops. "Nobody's ever
correctly picked where we'd finish," said a grinning Wallace.
Indeed, the Rainbows have finished in the top five of the league
in all but two of the last seven seasons while prognosticators
slated them for the bottom of the WAC barrel. "People say we're
only better than three teams?" said UH sharpshooter Tes Whitlock.
"We'll see about that."
----
With the return of top players Nani Cockett and Tanya Brunton,
both sidelined with knee injuries last season, the UH Wahine
basketball team is tabbed to finish third in the 10-team Big West
Conference by the league coaches. Santa Barbara is rated as the
No. 1 team in the conference followed by New Mexico State.
** Prep Football Showdowns Set **
The state's third and fourth-ranked teams, Kahuku and Waianae,
will do battle for the Oahu Interscholastic Association football
championship tomorrow night at Aloha Stadium. Earlier this
season, the Red Raiders (7-0-1) and Seariders (6-1-1) played to a
21-21 tie. Kahuku played that game with several key players
sidelined with injuries and is a slight favorite tomorrow night.
"They're a much improved team," said Waianae coach Leo Taaca.

** Bows Beat Bulldogs **
Using a solid all-around performance by quarterback Johnny Macon
and a fourth-quarter goal line stand, Hawaii edged Fresno State
42-37 in a Western Athletic Conference football game last night
before 23,767 fans at Aloha Stadium. Macon, starting last
night's game because first-stringer Glenn Freitas was out with an
ankle injury, made a strong bid to remain as the number one
signal-caller by racking up 314 yards in total offense (173
passing, 141 rushing). Even with Macon's fine showing, it was
the Rainbow defense that clinched the victory by denying the
Bulldogs a go-ahead score with just over two minutes remaining in
the contest. The Bows (4-4 overall and 2-3 in the WAC) travel to

** UH Offensive Production Down **
Compared to recent seasons, the offensive unit of UH's football
team has not been as steamroller-like. In 1992 and 1993, the
Bows averaged over 270 yards rushing per game. That production
dropped to 171.8 yards per contest last season and is even lower
in 1995 at 160.8. First-year offensive coordinator Kanani Souza
attributes the diminished production to several factors: a young
offensive line, injuries, and a lack of execution. "I guess
we're not as good as past years," said Souza.

** Wags Ignores Daily Rags **
Calling the material produced by Honolulu's two daily newspapers
"depressing," UH football coach Bob Wagner says he has cancelled
subscriptions to the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-
Bulletin and no longer reads them. "I don't like reading a lot
of negative stuff," said Wagner, who has had to endure a flood of
criticism from media and fans because of his team's lackluster 3-
4 start this season. Wagner and his Rainbows hope to quiet
critics by defeating Fresno State this Saturday night at Aloha
Stadium.
** Wahine Still No. 2 **
The UH Wahine continue to trail Nebraska in the weekly USA
Today Women's National volleyball poll. However, Hawaii
continues to lead the nation in attendance, averaging 4,695 fans
per match. The season attendance mark of 72,652 Hawaii set in
1994 is certain to fall this weekend as the Wahine have already
drawn 70,430 fans this season. With six home matches remaining,
the Wahine hope to go over the 100,000 mark in attendance this
season. In addition to attendance marks, Hawaii will be looking
to add to more victories to its 21-0 record with matches against
Nevada Thursday and Friday at the Special Events Arena.

Dave Shoji watched the Wahine simply overpower the overmatched
Aggies. "Hawaii has such a strong hitting game that they just
overpower you," said Utah State coach Ginny Alexander, whose team

** BYU: Hawaii not Rivals **
Hawaii football players, coaches, and fans always point to BYU as
*the* big game of season. BYU competitors and backers, however,
see it differently. "It's just not a big rivalry over here,"
said Chris Tunis, host of a Salt Lake City radio talk show.
Added Cougar tight end Chad Lewis, "We respect Hawaii a lot. But
our main rival, for obvious reasons, is Utah." BYU (3-3) and

Cougars hold a 14-7 series advantage over the Bows.

** Puns, Saints in ILH Biggie **
Punahou and St. Louis, the state's top two high school football
teams, will square-off in the feature game of an ILH tripleheader
tomorrow night at Aloha Stadium. The nationally-ranked
Buffanblu, 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the league's second round of
play, will have to beat the Crusaders without the ILH's leading
ground gainer, Afa Thompson, who is lost for the season with a
torn knee ligament in a game against Kamehameha last weekend.
Meanwhile, the second-ranked Crusaders (6-1 and 2-0), the winners
of nine consecutive ILH and Oahu Prep Bowl titles, appear solid
as ever with all-state quarterback Darnell Arceneaux running the
offense. The Saints look to avenge their first round loss to the
Puns. A victory tomorrow will all but clinch the ILH title for
the Buffanblu, who would have to win just one of their two
remaining games--both against the weakest teams in the league. A
Crusader triumph will give them the upper-hand for ILH's second
round title and post-season rematch with Punahou, the first round
winner.
** No Championship Playoffs for Rams **
Radford High's football team will not participate in the OIA's
championship playoffs after Circuit Court Judge Kevin Chang
denied a temporary restraining order yesterday that would have
restored four forfeited games and the eligibility of a suspended
player who was deemed too old to play. The parents of Ram
running back Jerry Benford filed a lawsuit claiming that the
league age-limit rules were unfair. Earlier in the season,
Benford played in four Radford games--all victories--although he
was 18 years, 10 months, a month over the league age requirement.
When the oversight was discovered, the OIA ordered that Radford
must forfeit the four games and that Benford be suspended from
further competition. If Chang had approved the restraining
order, the victories and Benford's eligibility would have been
restored, and Radford would have advanced into the OIA's
championship playoffs which begin tonight. However, the season
is not over for the Rams, who will travel to Aiea tomorrow night
to meet Na Alii in a consolation playoff game.

** Garcia Tough **
Literally surfing in his backyard, Sunny Garcia cruised to a
second round victory as the Town & Country Surf Tour Championship
got underway yesterday at Maili Point. Garcia, born and raised
on Oahu's west side, ripped the 1- to 2-foot surf with unbridled
ease. Said Garcia: I learned how to surf (on the West shore). I
kind of consider this my contest." Other Hawaii surfers
advancing were Kalani Robb, John Shimooka, Kaipo Jaquias, Johnny
Boy Gomes, Andy Irons, and Jason Bogle. Qualifying rounds
continue today through next Wednesday.
** Johnson Leaves Temporarily **
UH pitcher Mark Johnson will miss a couple weeks of practice with
the Bows as he headed to Homestead, Fla. yesterday to compete for
a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Johnson, a junior right-hander
for Hawaii, has a good shot to make the team after going 5-0 with
a 2.34 ERA during Team USA's summer tour.
** Murrell Leads Jets **
Regarded as just a back-up player when the season began, former
Leilehua and West Virginia running back Adrian Murrell
capitalized on a shot at a starting position for the New York
Jets and leads the team with 350 yards on 82 carries, a 4.3
average. He also has 33 receptions for 279 yards. Said Murrell:
I've always had confidence in my ability. All I needed was a
shot."
** Wahine Lose **
The UH Wahine soccer team lost to Montana 3-1 yesterday at
Missoula, Montana. Poliala Paresa was the goal scorer for the
Wahine, who fell to 3-11-2 on the season. The Wahine will wind
up their road trip with a match at Washington State tomorrow.
** Vulcans Triumph **
UH-Hilo defeated Utah State 15-6, 8-15, 15-3, 15-12 in a women's
volleyball match last night in Hilo. Tanya Fuamatu led the
Vulcans (19-5) with 17 kills. The Aggies (0-22) will travel to
Honolulu for matches tomorrow and Saturday night against an even
tougher foe, the second-ranked UH Wahine.
** Cross-Country News **
The UH Wahine cross-country team will compete in the Big West
Championship meet this Saturday at Huntington Beach (Calif.)

regarded Wahine are led by Jody Radkewich who finished second

** Advantage for BYU? **
The Hawaii (3-3) travels to Provo, Utah this weekend to face
rival BYU (3-3) in a WAC football matchup and some people feel
that the Cougars have an advantage over the Rainbows and other
foes because they have a roster full of older and more physically
mature players who have gone on two-year missions for the Mormon
Church. "What people don't understand is, when we're on a
mission, we don't touch a football for two years," said BYU
running back Hema Hemuli, who completed his two-year mission in
California. Said tight end Chad Lewis, a former-missionary for in
Taichung, Taiwan: "It's two years of inactivity. As for football
conditioning, it's a step backward."
** Wahine Still No. 2 **
The UH Wahine retained their second position in the weekly USA

the nation in attendance, averaging 4,753 fans per match. The
season attendance mark of 72,652 Hawaii set last season is

** Olympic Trial Berth for Mota **
Hawaii runner Darlene Mota earned a berth at the U.S. Olympic
Trials by winning the Ocean State Marathon yesterday at Warwick,
Rhode Island. Battling gusting winds and an aching hamstring,
Mota breezed to a course-record time of 2 hours, 41 minutes, 23
seconds. Mota's time was well under the Olympic qualifying time
of 2:50:00, and because she finished under 2:42:00, she will
receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Feb 10. trials at
Columbia, S.C. Mota is the second Hawaii runner to qualify for a
shot at the U.S. Olympic team. Earlier this year, Jeannie
Wokasch finished the Rome Marathon in 2:41:00 to earn a
qualifying berth.
** BYU Next for Bows **
The UH football team (3-3), coming off its romp over Central
Florida, will face traditional rival BYU this Saturday in Provo,
Utah. This year's BYU team is far from the WAC-beaters the
school has fielded in past years, but the Cougars still lead the
conference with 3-1 record (3-3 overall).
----
Citing a slowdown in the economy and competing sporting events as
causes, UH athletic department officials announced that football
season ticket sales are down and will not generate enough income
to cover expenses as in past years. To pay for its operating
budget, the football Bows needed $3,042,000 but ticket sales only
netted $2.5 million.
** Hawaii Winter Baseball League **
West Oahu 5, Honolulu 3 (first game)
Honolulu 6, West Oahu 4 (second game): At Hans L'Orange Park, the
CaneFires (4-4) and Sharks (3-5) split a doubleheader yesterday
afternoon. Ben Agbayani's three-run triple was the big blow in
West Oahu's first-game victory while the Sharks' D.J. Boston
continued to terrorize HWBL pitchers by hitting a homer, driving
in three runs, and going 4 for 6 on the day.
----
Maui 3, Hilo 2: At Wong Stadium, Ronnie Hall batted 3 for 4 and
Dwight Maness homered and doubled to lead the Stingrays (5-4)
over the Stars (5-4).

** Bows Win One For Daniel **
Focused and emotionally charged following a pre-game pep talk by
a teammate, the University of Hawaii football team walloped
Central Florida 45-14 before 24,383 fans last night at Aloha
Stadium. "This was for Daniel (Ho Ching)" said linebacker George
Noga about his teammate who was diagnosed with cancer earlier in
the week. "If we didn't win, we would have let him down." Prior
to the game, Ho Ching addressed the Bows, telling them they were
in his heart. "We wanted him to know he was in our hearts," said
Tad Yamashita, the player who took Ho Ching's place at strong
safety in the Rainbow lineup. Noga, Yamashita, and the rest of
Hawaii team were true to their word, limiting a potent Golden
Knight offense to just 270 total yards while unleashing a
powerful offensive attack that amassed nearly 500 yards in total
offense. Slotback Tony Thomas rushed for 118 yards and a
touchdown on 12 carries, leading Rainbow play-by-play announcer
to proclaim "George who?" in reference to the departure of
heralded freshman George Ornellas. The victory boosted UH to 3-3
on the season while Central Florida fell to 3-4. Next up for the
Bows is BYU.
