** Bodyboarding King Crowned **
Kona's Mike Stewart won the battle but lost the war yesterday at
the Banzai Pipeline. Masterfully negotiating the Pipe's 6- to
10-foot surf, Stewart captured the Morey Bodyboards World
Championship meet in dominating fashion Unfortunately for
Stewart, Brazilian Guilherme Tamega's third place finish
yesterday earned Tamega the overall bodyboarding tour title. In
years past, the tour champion was determined solely on the
outcome of the Morey meet.
** Wahine Edge Wolfpack **
The UH Wahine basketball team improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in
the Big West Conference with a 55-52 victory over Nevada-Reno
last night in Reno. Nani Cockett and Tania Brunton scored 13
points each for Hawaii, which travels to California to face
Pacific tomorrow.
** Bows Beat Alums **
Les Murakami's UH baseball Bows looked fairly good, particularly
their projected starting pitchers, in a 5-1 triumph over an
Alumni team last night at Rainbow Stadium. Hawaii's starting
rotation of Mark Johnson, Paul Ah Yat, and Robby Robinson
combined for seven shutout innings. The Bows, who were out-hit
7-6 by the Alums, broke open a 1-1 game with four runs in the
bottom of the eighth. Jody Napuunoa's triple and Jaime Ahu's
double were the big blows for Hawaii in the inning.
** Seasiders Upset HPU **
Unranked BYU-Hawaii (11-4), with the addition of 6-9, 260-pound
Pauliasi Taulava, defeated Hawaii Pacific (15-3), the nation's
5th-ranked NAIA basketball team, 73-65 last night at the
Blaisdell Arena. Taulava scored 15 points and eight rebounds,
and along with 6-10, 265-pound Ionatana Enosa and 6-7, 215-pound
Paulasi Matavao, helped to hold HPU center Juergen Malbeck to
seven points.
** Sumo Day 7 Report **
Yokozuna Takanohana (7-0) retained a one-match lead in the New
Year's Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo with a victory over
Mitoizumi yesterday. Two Hawaii wrestlers were defeated and fell
to 5-2. Ozeki Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) was
upset by Kotonowaka (2-5) and 626-pound Konishiki (Nanakuli's
Salevaa Atisanoe) was thrown down by 232-pound Kyokudozan (5-
2).
** Fornelia Out at Kailua **
Citing a heavy workload and declining health as reasons, Kailua
High School football coach Jerry Fornelia announced his
resignation yesterday. Fornelia, who led the Surfriders to the
OIA White Conference title last season, said his teaching load
and coaching duties at Kailua became so heavy that his free-time
was almost nil and his health started to decline. He will
continue to teach.

** Sumo Day 6 Report **
Grand champion Takanohana is in sole possession of the lead of
the New Year's Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo. The young
superstar improved to 6-0 with a victory over Asahiyutaka (4-2)
yesterday. Five rikishi are 5-1, including ozeki (champion)
Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), who defeated Kenko (4-
2), and maegashira (senior wrestler) Konishiki (Nanakuli's
Salevaa Atisanoe), who forced out Tamakasuga (5-1).
** Bows Host Utes Tomorrow **
All-American candidate Keith Van Horn and his Utah Ute teammates
are in town to take on Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference
basketball game tomorrow night at the Special Events Arena. The
Rainbows, off to a disappointing 1-3 start in the conference,
will have do battle with their 13th-ranked foes without starting
forward Justice Sueing, who must sit out both games against the
Utes this season as punishment for elbowing Van Horn in the head
in the WAC postseason tournament final last March. "We'll just
put somebody else in there and try to play harder," said UH coach
Riley Wallace.
** Two Invited **
UH pitcher Mark Johnson and Arizona State hurler Kaipo Spenser of
Wailuku, Maui were among 40 players extended invitations to the
USA Baseball team's spring camp at Millington, Tenn. in May.
Both are junior righthanders, were members of the 1995 USA
Baseball Team, and are vying for spots on the US Olympic baseball
team's 25-man roster.
** Sports Shorts **
Two UH football players were named to the WAC academic all-
conference team yesterday. Offensive lineman Michael Anderson
from New Zealand had a 3.45 GPA in arts and sciences, and special
teams player Tyler Tanigawa of Kauai had a 3.42 GPA in food
science.
----
UH swimmer Peter Lindh was named the WAC Swimmer of the Week
for
January 1-7. Lindh, a native of Sweden, led the Bows to a
second-place finish in the Rainbow Invitational meet (Jan. 2-3)
and a dual meet triumph over Villanova on Jan. 6.

** Bows Fall at Pit **
Sparked by a raucous crowd of 17,206 and the inspired play of
freshman Kenny Thomas, 25th-ranked New Mexico topped Hawaii
78-72
in a Western Athletic Conference basketball game last night at
the Pit in Albuquerque, N.M. The 6-foot-9, 250-pound Thomas,
described by UH assistant coach Jackson Wheeler as "the best
freshman in this league I've ever seen," poured in 26 points,
snagged 11 rebounds, and knocked away 6 Bow shots. "He ruled the
roost," said New Mexico coach Dave Bliss. Despite Thomas'
dominating performance, the Rainbows did not fold easily, cutting
an 18-point deficit to 67-66 with just under three minutes left.
But the Lobos (13-1 overall and 3-1 in the WAC) responded in the
clutch, hitting nine charity tosses in the final two and a half
minutes. Anthony Harris scored 23 points and Justice Sueing
added 19 for the Bows (4-8 and 1-3), who return home for WAC
match-ups against Utah and BYU this weekend.
** Sumo Day 5 Results **
Two Hawaii sumotori remain one match behind the leaders after
notching victories yesterday in the New Year's Grand Sumo
Tournament in Tokyo. Ozeki Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of
Waianae) improved to 4-1 by dealing Takatoriki his first loss of
the tournament. Also at 4-1 is Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa
Atisanoe) who forced out Higanoumi (3-2). Leading the 15-day
tournament with 5-0 records are yokozuna Takanohana and
maegashira 15 Tamakasuga.
** Wahine On Road **
The UH Wahine basketball team is on the Mainland for two Big West
Conference games this week. Tonight, the Wahine (9-2 overall and
3-0 in the conference) face Nevada-Reno (3-8 and 1-3). On
Saturday, Hawaii will take on Pacific (8-5 and 3-1). After a
dismal 6-24 campaign in 1995, the 1996 UH Wahine vintage is much
more potent, with Nani Cockett and Tania Brunton--both injury
redshirts last year--adding the most spice to the mix. "Those
two make a big difference," said Pacific coach Melissa DeMarchi.
"They make Hawaii a dangerous team."
** Baseball Bows Set to Go **
UH baseball coach said he will go with his best when his Bows
face an Alumni team tomorrow night at Rainbow Stadium.
Murakami
will use his three top pitchers--Mark Johnson, Paul Ah Yat, Robby
Robinson, and Jay Spurgeon--on the mound against the Alums. In
the outfield, veterans Robert Medeiros, Neal Honma, Jason Ross,
and Keoni Hansen will see time. In the infield, shortstop Jaime
Ahu and second baseman Jody Napuunoa give the Bows a strong
middle. Murakami will also start three freshmen: Greg Millichap
at third, Lars Hansen at first, and Kenn Wakakuwa at catcher.
** Three Sign With Hawaii **
New UH football coach Fred vonAppen announced the signing of the
first three recruits of his regime. Two of the new Bows are
former Waianae High players: freshman-to-be Akoni Sandoval, a
6-2, 290 pound offensive lineman, and JC transfer Ben Iosefa, a
6-2, 295 pound guard who played for Foothill (Calif.) College
this past season. The third new Hawaii recruit is Chris
Shinnick, a 6-0, 198 pound defensive back from Los Angeles Valley
College.
** Prep Basketball Results **
Kalaheo 83, Castle 53: At Kalaheo, Steve Hess and Brian Yule
scored 17 points apiece as the Mustangs (2-0), the state's
second-ranked team, easily dispatched of the Knights (0-2).
----
Kaiser 52, McKinley 37: At McKinley, the Cougars improved to 1-1
with a victory over the Tigers (0-2). Steven Giles dropped in 21
points for Kaiser.
----
Moanalua 61, Waipahu 40: At Waipahu, the sixth-ranked Na
Menehune
(2-0) used a 19-6 first quarter blitz to subdue the Marauders
(1-1) last night. Ramsey Williams paced Moanalua with 13 points.
----
Waianae 67, Waialua 55: At Waianae, the Seariders (1-1) outscored
the Bulldogs (0-2) in every quarter except the fourth in their
victory last night.
----
Pearl City 51, Leilehua 46: At Pearl City, the Chargers (1-1)
used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Mules (0-2).

** Bows Make Pit Stop Today **
Hawaii will take on New Mexico in a Western Athletic Conference
basketball battle today (4:30 p.m. HST) at the Pit, the Lobo's
18,500 seat arena. The Rainbows are 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the
conference. New Mexico is 12-1 and 2-1.
** Sumo Day 4 Results **
Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) topped Kotobeppu and
Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) defeated Misugisato on
the fourth day of the New Year's Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo.
Both are 3-1. Tamakasuga, Takanonami, and Takanohana all have
unblemished 4-0 records. Meanwhile, Ozeki Wakanohana, the winner
of the last tournament in November, became the second rikishi to
withdraw from the current tourney because of an injury. The day
before, grand champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan)
withdrew
because of knee problems.
** VonAppen's Staff Set **
UH football coach Fred vonAppen hired the final member of his
coaching staff yesterday. The newest Bow assistant is Don
Dillon, 47, who has been the head coach for the last ten years at
Hiram Johnson High in Sacramento, Calif. He will coach the
running backs at UH.
** Hula Bowl to Woe Young'ens **
Hula Bowl officials are attempting to attract the top
underclassmen for Jan. 21 game at Aloha Stadium. The Hula Bowl
is the only all-star football game that invites juniors. Non-
seniors being extended invitations are running back Mo Williams
from Kentucky, offensive lineman Jon Runyan and running back Tim
Biakabutuka from Michigan, UCLA ball carrier Karim Abdul-Jabbar,
and Ohio State receiver Terry Glenn.
** Tita Takes HPU Post **
Former UH Wahine All-American Reydan "Tita" Ahuna has accepted
the head coaching job for the Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball
team. Ahuna, an intimidating outside hitter on Hawaii's 1987
national championship team, was the boys' volleyball coach at
Kamehameha from 1991-1994, leading the Warriors to two state
titles in that span. She did not coach this past season so that
she could return to the University of Hawaii to earn a
professional diploma.
** Sports Shorts **
Hawaii Pacific (14-2 and 2-0) and BYU-Hawaii (10-4 and 1-1) will
meet in a big Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
basketball showdown Friday at the Blaisdell Arena. The Sea
Warriors, ranked 5th in the NAIA, will rely on its quickness and
the inside power of 7-foot-1 center Juergen Malbeck against BYUH,
which has size aplenty, with 6-10, 265 pound Ionatana Enosa and
6-9, 260 pound Pauliasi Taulava the top Seasider wide-bodies.

** UTEP Tops Bows **
Despite a strong second half rally, the UH basketball team could
not overcome a 25-point hole it dug for itself in a 85-75 WAC
loss to Texas-El Paso last night at the Special Events Center at
El Paso. In what UH coach Riley Wallace called "the worst half
of basketball this season," the Rainbows shot miserably while
the Miners pierced the Rainbow defense from near and afar. "It
was like nothing clicked," said Rainbow forward Micah Kroeger.
"Everything that could go wrong went wrong." But the Rainbows
fought back from its half from hell. Trailing 56-31 early in the
second half, the Hawaii rallied, outscoring UTEP 28-10 in a ten
minute stretch. Urged on by a crowd of 8,504, the Miners (10-2
overall and 2-1 in the WAC) held off the Bows (4-7 and 1-2) by
hitting critical freethrows and buckets in the final four
minutes. Anthony Harris scored 22 points for Hawaii. Seth
Sundberg, playing his best game of the season, added 17 and
grabbed 11 rebounds.
** Margerum Joins Bow Staff; Semones Next? **
New UH football coach Fred vonAppen added former Stanford All-
American receiver Ken Margerum to his staff yesterday and today
is expected to get a commitment from another, Kahuku High's Doug
Semones. Margerum, who will coach the Bow wideouts and tight
ends, was a consensus All-American pass catcher for Stanford in
1979 and 1980. He has been the offensive coordinator for Hawaii
Prep Academy on the Big Island for the past three seasons.
Semones, the coach of four Red Raider OIA championship squads in
his seven years at the North Shore school, "is 99 percent sure to
accept the UH offer" according to unnamed sources. He is
expected to coach the Rainbow special teams.
** Sumo Day 3 Results **
Grand champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), hampered by a
painful knee injury, withdrew from New Year's Grand Sumo
tournament yesterday. He had performed poorly in his first two
matches, losing both. Meanwhile, two other rikishi from Hawaii
won their matches and improved to 2-1. Ozeki Musashimaru
(Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) easily forced out Minatofuji (0-3)
and maegashira Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) absorbed
Oginishiki's charge and forced him out. Seven wrestlers are
unbeaten after three matches, including grand champion Takanohana
and ozeki Takanonami.
** Local Small College Basketball **
Hawaii Pacific ripped Hilo 112-88 last night at Mid-Pacific Gym.
Juergen Malbeck muscled in 28 points and Anthony Dixon added 24
for the Sea Warriors (15-2), the NAIA's fifth-ranked team. Hilo
was playing without starting center Jason Granger, who sustained
several cuts on his feet while rescuing a young boy from a pond
at the Big Island's Richardson's Beach Park on Sunday.
Richardson and the boy are recovering well.
** Diaz Recovering **
After an extended hospital stay, Farrington High football coach
Ed "Skippa" Diaz is recovering well after suffering from
congestive heart failure caused by sleep apnea last month. Down
to 290 pounds after weighing over 350 last month, Diaz said his
doctors have ordered him to change his diet, increase his
exercise time, and use a breathing apparatus to help him sleep.
"I'm feeling so much better," said Dias, who in his heyday was
known as the "Bull of Kalihi." "It was touch and go for awhile
in the hospital." A special-motivation teacher at Farrington,
Diaz is expected to return to the classroom next month.

** Sumo Day 2 Results **
All three sumotori from Hawaii lost on the second day of the New
Year's Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo. Grand champion Akebono
(Chad Rowan of Waimanalo) was an upset victim to Tosanoumi (1-1),
a young rising star. It was Akebono's second defeat in a row.
Also falling yesterday were ozeki Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani
of Waianae), who fell to 1-1 following a setback to Asahiyutaka
(1-1), and maegashira Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli),
who is 1-1 after losing to Aogiyama (2-0). Among the ten rikishi
without a loss are grand champion Takanohana and ozeki
Takanonami.
** Wahine Romp **
The UH Wahine ripped San Jose State 96-52 in a Big West women's
basketball game last night in front of 800 fans at the Special
Events Arena. "There's not much you can say when a team comes
out and shoots 50 percent, gets to go to the line 35 times, and
crushes you on the boards," said an exasperated SJS coach Karen
Smith. "They did every single thing right." Nani Cockett led
the UH attack with 24 points, including 5 of 7 shots from three
point land. Kendis Leeburg added 16 points while Tania Brunton
scored 14 points and snagged 13 rebounds for the Wahine (9-2
overall and 3-0 in the conference). Hawaii takes to the road for
the first time this season. The Wahine take on Nevada on Friday
and Pacific on Sunday.
** Bows Meet Miners Tonight **
Charged with a renewed sense of purpose, the 4-6 UH men's
basketball team will try to take a step toward squaring its
record when it takes on Texas-El Paso in Western Athletic
Conference clash tonight at El Paso. After a disappointing loss
at home to Colorado State, the Hawaii players decided to commit
to working harder in practice and competing more fiercely in
games. "There's a different attitude around here," said Rainbow
captain and leading scorer Anthony Harris. "And it starts here,"
he said, pointing to his heart.
** Bodyboarders Advance **
Twelve bodyboarders from Hawaii advanced to the round of 32 in
the Morey Bodyboards World Championship in 4- to 8-foot surf at
the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore. Hawaii athletes still
competing in the third round are Mike Stewart, Ben Severson,

** Sumo Day 1 Results **
Two of three sumotori from Hawaii were victorious on the opening
day of the New Year's Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo. Grand
champion Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo) was an upset victim
to
Takatoriki, who side-stepped his much larger foe and pulled him
down at the ring's edge. Winning their opening matches were
ozeki Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), who shoved out
Tosanoumi, and Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli), who
topped Asanosho. In other matches of note, grand champion
Takanohana defeated Musoyama and ozeki Wakanohana, the winner
of
the November basho, was upset by Mitoizumi.
** Malbeck Leads Sea Warriors **
Seven-foot-one center Juergen Malbeck is the big gun for the 14-2
Hawaii Pacific men's basketball team. A junior from Noerdlingen,
Germany, Malbeck is the Sea Warriors' go-to player and is
averaging 18.4 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. "After the
first couple of games, we decided to give him the ball all the
time," said HPU coach Tony Sellitto. "We could see that nobody
could stop this kid." Malbeck, who has turned down professional
offers from European teams, has a good chance of making in the
NBA, according to NBA big-man guru Pete Newell. "That'd be a
dream come true," said Malbeck.
** Bows' Misfortunes Analyzed **
Why is the University of Hawaii basketball team struggling so far
this year? According to the Honolulu Advertiser, several reasons
exist for the Bows' woeful 4-6 start:
1. No Tes Whitlock. Last year's leading scorer has been
suspended for Hawaii's first 16 games for providing
misleading information to the NCAA.
2. Recruiting misfortunes--Three UH recruits never donned the
Rainbows' green and white. One, Davey Fortson, was killed
during a random shooting last March. Two others, Art Ford
and George Evans, were academic casualties.
3. Injuries--several players are hampered by troublesome aches
and maladies, including center Seth Sundberg (knee,
shoulder, back) and Eric Ambrozich (urinary tract
infection).
4. Sputtering offense: Although Anthony Harris has been an
effective scorer, his teammates have played inconsistently.
Hawaii's lack of a consistent inside game is apparent.
5. Defensive woes: Lacking overall quickness, the Bows have
been vulnerable in transition and against teams who use a
spread-em-out, driving offensive attack.
6. Leadership--Hawaii lacks a take-charge leader this season.
Harris was elected team captain earlier this season.
However, he is more of lead-by-example type than a rah-rah,
in-your-face captain that has inspired past Bow teams.
** Wahine Play Tonight **
The 8-2 UH Wahine basketball team will look to extend their Big
West Conference unbeaten string to three in a game against San
Jose State (5-5) tonight at the Special Events Arena. The
Spartans' top player is Australian Kylie Page (20 points a game
average), the most recent Big West Player of Week.
** Bodyboarding World Championship **
With the tour's top pros getting a day off because they were
already seeded into the main draw, a host of hopefuls attacked
the 6- to 8-foot surf at the Banzai Pipeline in qualifying rounds
for the Morey Bodyboards World Championship began. Several
Hawaii watermen advanced to the next round including, Jack "The
Ripper" Lindholm, Kyle Maligro, Chris Gagnon, Spencer Skipper,
Rob Gall, Aka Lyman, Joey Vieira, Kaui Kauhi, Mike McGuire, Harry
Antipala, Justin Morizono, and Tony Tarpley. Nine-time world
champ Mike Stewart of Kona drew a bye. The meet continues today,
surf permitting.

Channel 9 TV. Francis, a Kailua High grad who went on to play in
the NFL for New England and San Francisco, has been working in

** Akebono not 100% **
Because of a nagging knee problem, grand Champion Akebono (Chad
Rowan of Waimanalo) will only be competing at 80% of maximum for
the New Year's Grand Sumo Tournament set to begin tonight in
Tokyo. Akebono, who had been practicing well recently after
having to withdraw from the November tournament with a knee
strain, complained of soreness in his right knee after a workout
on Tuesday. With Akebono at less than full strength, ozeki
Wakanohana, the winner of the last tournament, will see his
chance of earning promotion to grand champion improve
considerably. Other strong contenders for the Basho title are
Wakanohana's brother, grand champion Takanohana, and ozeki
Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae).

The Morey Bodyboards World Championship begins today at the

contest alone. Instead, the winner of the world's best
bodyboarder crown will be based on an accumulation of points for
nine tour events. Currently, Brazil's Guilherme Tamega, the 1994
world champ, is the points leader and can clinch the title by
finishing third or better at the Pipe. Meanwhile, Stewart, who
won this event last year, is in second place and needs a victory
to claim world supremacy.

** Rams Edge Bows **
The UH basketball team missed an opportunity to seize an early
season lead in the Western Athletic Conference when it lost to
Colorado State 74-69 last night before a crowd of 4,703 at the
Special Events Arena. The Bows led 31-26 at the half, easily
solving the Rams' box-and-one and triangle-and-two defensive
schemes. When CSU switched to a 2-3 zone in the second the half,
Hawaii stumbled, missing 14 of 15 shots in one stretch. Anthony
Harris shaked-and-baked his way for 27 points for Hawaii (1-1 WAC
and 4-6 overall). Alika Smith added 15 and Justice Sueing 12. A
statewide TV audience was literally left in the dark for much of
the second half when heavy rain showers caused transmission
problems for KFVE, the station broadcasting the contest.
** Wahine Romp **
The UH Wahine basketball team had no problem beating a team it
has had difficulties with over the years last night at the
Special Events Arena. Paced by the scoring of Nani Cockett and
Kendis Leeburg (16 points apiece) and a suffocating pressing
defense, Hawaii ripped Nevada-Las Vegas 69-43 before a crowd of
about 600. In the 20-year series between the two teams, the
Wahine have beaten the Rebels just eight times in 37 tries. The
Wahine (8-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big West) take on San Jose
State at home on Sunday before hitting the road next week.
** VonAppen Hires Two More **
New UH football coach Fred vonAppen announced the hiring of two
more assistants for his football staff. The two, defensive back
coach Trent Miles and defensive line coach Ulima Afoa, were
rookie members of departed coach Bob Wagner's staff last season.
** Vulcans Lose Player **
Two weeks after losing two players to the academic axeman, the
UH-Hilo basketball team lost another, this time because of a
personal conflict with the coach. Malik Clark, a guard who led
the Vulcans in assists through their first 11 games, has left the
team for personal reasons. Vulcan coach Jim Forkum suspended
Clark for not returning on time after Christmas break and instead
of accepting the suspension, Clark opted not to rejoining the
team. Two weeks ago, Hilo lost two other frontline players,
Marcus Rogers and Eric White, who were deemed academically
ineligible.
** Prep Basketball **
The local high school basketball regular season begins in earnest

** Rams Next For Bows **
Hawaii will try to improve its WAC men's basketball record to 2-0
and its overall mark to 5-5 with a victory over Colorado State
(0-1 and 6-4) tonight at the Special Events Arena. Freshman
point guard Sam Smith from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia has
played surprisingly well for the Bows. "He's a fighter," said
teammate Anthony Harris. "When he's out there, he gets in
people's faces. He makes things happen."
** Wahine Face Rebels **
The UH Wahine will take on Nevada-Las Vegas, a team that has
Hawaii's number over the years, in a women's college basketball
game tonight at the Special Events Arena. Despite being 7-29
against the Rebels in the past 20 years, the Wahine (7-2 overall
and 1-0 in the Big West) are favored tonight. UNLV has been
struggling of late, finishing the 1995 season 11-15 and getting
off to a dismal 1-7 start this year. "They can be 0-1000, but we
will always have battles with them," said UH coach Vince Goo.
They get up for us and we get up for them, so it's always great
competition."
** Kuboyama Hula Bowl Bound **
University of Hawaii safety Clint Kuboyama became the third
Rainbow named to this year's Hula Bowl roster. A 5-11, 181

Matt
Harding and George Noga on the West squad which will take on
their East counterparts in the 50th Hula Bowl game on Jan. 21 at
Aloha Stadium.
** Wagner Nixes Offer **
Former UH football coach Bob Wagner turned down an offer to be
the defensive coordinator for Frankfurt of the World Football
League. Wagner, who is still owed two years salary by the
University, said the timing wasn't right for him to accept the
Frankfurt job. Also turning down a coaching position was one of
Wagner's assistants, quarterback coach Michael Carter, who
declined a similar job at Southern Utah, a Division IAA school.
According to unnamed sources, a third Wagner aide, defensive line
coach Ulima Afoa, will be offered a position on the staff of new
UH coach Fred vonAppen.
** Three Named to UH Circle **
Three former University of Hawaii athletes have been selected for
induction into the UH Sports Circle of Honor. The three are Tom
Henderson, an All-American basketball player in the early 70s for
the Rainbows who went on to represent the U.S. in the Olympics
and play professionally; football player Levi Stanley, a standout
defensive tackle from 1969-1973 who still holds the UH career
record for tackles with 366; and Maynard "Buster" Piltz, an all-
around athlete who earned 13 letters in five sports--baseball,
basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball--while attending UH
in the 30s. The three will be recognized at halftime of
tonight's UH-Colorado State basketball game.

** Bow Men, Wahine Open League Seasons Tonight **
The University of Hawaii men's and women's basketball teams begin
their conference seasons tonight at the Special Events Arena.
Riley Wallace and his UH men (3-5) host Wyoming (6-4) at 8:00 HST
while Vince Goo's Wahine (6-2) challenge New Mexico State (5-5)
at 5:30. The coyote-quick Cowboys present a corral full of
problems for the big and cumbersome Bows. "They do everything
we
don't like to see," said UH assistant Jeff Law. "They run and
their offense revolves around a lot of one-on-one stuff." In the
women's game, the Wahine will have to subdue the league's best
player in the Aggies' Anita Maxwell, the Big West Player of the
Year the past two seasons. Said UH assistant George Wolfe: "She's
got to be the toughest player in the conference to guard. She
takes good shots and makes you foul."
----
The Wahine, with 10 players earning at least 3.0, had the highest
aggregate grade-point-average (3.27) of any other UH team for the
fall semester. Tiffany Fujimoto and Michelle Macintyre earned
straight A's.

** Bows Prep for WAC Opener **
Despite a less than promising 3-5 record, the University of
Hawaii men's basketball team is approaching the start of the
Western Athletic Conference season with optimism. Several close
losses to nationally-ranked squads in the just-completed Rainbow
Classic have fueled Hawaii's hopes for a strong showing in league
play. The Bows are at home to face Wyoming (6-4) tomorrow night
and Colorado State (6-3) Thursday evening. Defending league
champions Utah, with all five starters returning, are primed to
repeat. Thereafter, a host of teams, including New Mexico (10-
0), UTEP (8-1) and BYU (6-3), will battle for optimal positions
in the league's post-season tourney. Said UH assistant coach and
head scout Jeff Law: "If we play the way we're capable of
playing, we can be in the that upper half (of the WAC's 10
teams). But if we play like babies, we'll suck."
** UH Swimmers Lose Twice **
The UH men's and women's swim teams each lost a pair of dual meet
showdowns over the weekend. The men lost 149-82 to Purdue and
128-94 to Oakland. The Wahine fell to Purdue 150-72 and 114-109
to Illinois State.

** UMass Cops Classic Crown **
Massachusetts showed why it is the top-ranked college basketball
team in the nation by subduing No. 13 Syracuse 65-47 to capture
the Rainbow Classic championship last night at the Special Events
Arena. UMass superstar Marcus Camby, who missed most of Friday
night's semifinal against USC because of a bruised knee, returned
in full force last night, scoring 20 points, grabbing 10
rebounds, and swatting three shots. Camby and his Minutemen
teammates also played ferociously on defense, limiting the
Orangemen to their lowest offensive output of the season.
"They're a great defensive team," said Syracuse coach Jim
Boeheim. "They just do not let you get into your offense."
----
In earlier action, Hawaii (3-5) lost its third straight game,
this one a 95-89 decision to No. 18 Missouri. Despite being
winless in the tournament, UH coach Riley Wallace remained
optimistic: "The guys really worked at it. They stayed in it the
entire game and that's a good sign." The Rainbows begin their
Western Athletic Conference schedule this Tuesday with a home
game against Wyoming. The Bows' January schedule is as follows:
== Rainbow Men's Basketball Schedule for January ==
2--Wyoming. 4--Colorado State. 8--at UTEP. 10--at New

** Bows Nipped in OT **
Playing valiantly, the UH basketball team took Illinois, the nation's
12th
ranked hoop squad, to overtime before falling short 82-81 in a
consolation
game of the Rainbow Classic yesterday afternoon at the Special
Events
Arena. "We showed heart," said Rainbow guard Anthony Harris, who
scored 30 points and fouled out a minute into the extra period. Jerry
Gee hit one of two freethrows with two seconds remaining in OT to
give
the Illini the win. Justice Sueing's desperation full court heave fell
well short as time expired. Today, the Rainbows will play Missouri,
an
87-68 loser to NC State yesterday, for seventh place.

was
completed before the surf dropped to 10 to 15 feet, not big enough
for a

** Bows Bounced **
Hawaii was sent careening into the doldrums of the afternoon
consolation rounds after losing to Rhode Island 89-74 in the
first round of the Rainbow Classic basketball tournament last
night in front of a Special Events Arena crowd of 8,757. The
Rams outrebounded the Bows 42-35, forced 20 turnovers, and
blitzed Hawaii regularly in transition. "We have to suck it up
and come back strong," said guard Anthony Harris, who played all
40 minutes for Hawaii (3-3), scoring 32 points and handing out
four assists. Tomorrow at noon, the Bows will face 12th-ranked
Illinois, a 75-64 first round loser to Syracuse last night.
** Third UH Grid Assistant Named **
Don Lindsey, 54, is the newest addition to Fred vonAppen's
University of Hawaii coaching staff. The defensive coordinator
for the Memphis Mad Dogs of the World Football League last
season, Lindsey has extensive experience, having served stints
under John McKay at USC and Paul "Bear" Bryant at Alabama. "He
knows how to line (players) up and get them to play well and play
hard," said vonAppen, who earlier this month named two other
assistants: Guy Benjamin as offensive coordinator, and Walt
Klinker as offensive line coach.
** Local Small College Basketball **

** Jayhawks Bash Bruins **
Inspired by the news that their head coach wouldn't be leaving
them, the Kansas Jayhawks pounded UCLA 51-30 yesterday before a
crowd of about 25,000 in the Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl at Aloha
Stadium. Last week, Kansas coach Glen Mason had announced that
he had accepted the head coaching job at Georgia. However, on
the bus ride to Aloha Stadium yesterday morning, Mason told his
players he'd remain at Kansas. "It got us riled up," said running
back June Henley, who powered his way through the Bruin defense
for 107 yards, including a 49-yard second quarter TD ramble. For
the game, Kansas (10-2) amassed 548 yards, averaging 7.7 yards
per play. "They lined up 11 guys and kicked the crap out of us,"
said UCLA linebacker Abdul McCullough. The game marked the end
of Terry Donahue's reign at UCLA. He has inked a deal to become
TV analyst.
** Ching Honored **
Punahou defensive lineman Jason Ching was named to the USA
Today
All-American high school football team yesterday. A 6-4, 265
pounder, Ching was dominating on defense, amassing 15 sacks and
112 tackles for the Buffanblu this season. "He just runs over
people," said Punahou coach Dan Morrison.

team rankings yesterday. Oahu Prep Bowl champion St. Louis
finished as the sixth-ranked team in the West Region.

NCAA women's volleyball champion Nebraska this season. A true
freshman, Nepo played several different positions for the
Cornhuskers. "She'll be our starting setter next year," said
Nebraska coach Terry Pettit.
----
Four players from Hawaii were on the roster of University of
Montana football team, this year's NCAA I-AA national champions.

of 15 games; Eleu Kane (Kamehameha '94), a backup receiver who
caught 23 passes for 249 yards and 2 touchdowns this season; Mike
Wilson (Leilehua '91), another backup wide receiver; and Brian Ah
Yat (Iolani '94), a backup quarterback who is in the running for
the starting job next season.

premier setter in college volleyball," according to his coach;
Brian Wells (Punahou '91), a projected starter at outside hitter;
and Fred Robins (Kamehameha '95), the first player off the bench
for the Bruins.

** Lee Says No Thanks **
St. Louis High School athletic director and head football coach
Cal Lee yesterday announced his decision to turn down an
assistant coaching position at the University of Hawaii. Lee,
who has led the Crusaders to eleven Oahu Prep Bowl titles,
including the last ten, cited his strong ties to the school as
his primary reason for staying put. "I'm pretty happy where I'm
at," said Lee. "Deep down, the feeling I have is the grass roots
are deep at St. Louis." Lee also said that money wasn't a
factor, claiming that the financial package UH offered is similar
to the one he is receiving at St. Louis, where he has compiled a
163-27-4 record in 15 seasons. Fred vonAppen, the new UH head
coach, was unavailable for comment. He has returned to the
mainland to complete his obligation as defensive line coach for
the University of Colorado, which is playing in a New Year's day
bowl game.
** Aloha Bowl Report **
Kansas (9-2) and UCLA (7-4), the combatants in Monday's Aloha
Bowl, both boast bruising ground attacks. With 5-10, 210-pound
L.T. Levine (156 carries for 841 yards and 8 touchdowns) and 5-
11, 205-pound June Henley (158 carries 766 yards and 8
touchdowns), the Jayhawks have two strong pigskin packers. The
Bruins also can run the football and do so often, particularly
with consensus All-American and Outland Trophy winner Jonathan
Ogden at offensive tackle.
** Rainbow Classic Next Week **
Opening round matchups for the 32nd Rainbow Classic, set for Dec.
27-30 at the Special Events Arena, are as follows: Wed, Dec 27--
Syracuse versus Illinois and Rhode Island versus Hawaii; Thu, Dec
28--Southern Cal versus Missouri and Massachusetts versus North
Carolina State. Selected games will be televised on ESPN and
ESPN2.
** Punahou Falls to Mainland Foe **
After trying to match Punahou's inside muscle early on without
much success, Roman Catholic (Philadelphia) turned to its
superior speed and outside shooting to pull away from the
Buffanblu and notch a 62-48 triumph in the championship game of
the Iolani Prep Classic last night at Iolani Gym. The Cahillites
(6-1) led only 26-23 at the half. Said Roman Catholic head coach
Dennis Seldon: "Our problem in the first half was we were trying
muscle on muscle and in that situation we lose the game." An
11-0 Roman Catholic run in the third period stymied any comeback
hopes for the Buffanblu (8-1).

** Bows Bang Bluejays **
Playing with grit and fire, the UH men's basketball team pounded
Creighton 84-58 in the 3rd place game of the Hawaii Nike Festival
yesterday afternoon at the Special Events Arena. "The idea was
to go get them and not let them come into our house and take the
action to us," said UH coach Riley Wallace. The plan worked as
the Bows, using a harassing pressure defense and crashing the
boards relentlessly, raced to a 41-17 halftime advantage and
never looked back. Alika Smith scored 18 points to lead Hawaii
(3-3) Justice Sueing added 14 and Anthony Harris 13.
** Wahine Win **
The ailing but proud UH Wahine topped Illinois-Chicago 74-69 in a
foul-plagued Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic second round game
last night at the Special Events Arena. The game was anything
but aesthetically pleasing as officials whistled fifty-two fouls
and two players from each team fouled out of the contest. Tania
Brunton paced the Wahine with 27 points, 15 of which came from
the free-throw line. Two Nanis--Cockett and Flores--chipped in
with 11 and 10 points respectively for Hawaii, which will play
Wichita State in the round-robin tournament finale tonight.
** Ruffin a Tough One **
Former UH basketball player Trevor Ruffin scored a career high 32
points, including 7-of-10 three-pointers, to spark the
Philadelphia 76ers to a 108-104 overtime triumph over the Utah
Jazz last night at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. "I just had the
feeling tonight," said Ruffin, who entered the game in the second
period when starter Scott Skiles went down with an injury.
Ruffin, who played for the Phoenix Suns last year, started this
season with a Greek pro team before being picked up by the 76ers.
** Local Small College Hoops **
Two Oahu teams were in action yesterday and both lost. BYU-
Hawaii fell to Albertson 62-60 on a buzzer beater last night at
Cannon Activities Center in Laie. Steve Kramer hit a three-point
desperation heave as time expired to give Albertson (11-1) the
win over the Seasiders (4-4). On the mainland, Chaminade (0-8)
lost to Washburn 71-65 in a first round game of the Molten High
Desert Classic in Las Vegas.
** High School Pre-Season Basketball **
After topping mainland foes last night, Punahou and Kalaheo,
perhaps the two top prep teams in the state this season, will
meet tonight in a semifinal clash of the Iolani Prep Classic at
Iolani Gym. The Buffanblu--with a bruising front line that
averages 6-foot-4, 260 pounds--upset nationally-ranked St. Joseph
(Calif) 68-54 in one quarterfinal matchup. The Mustangs also
prevailed, defeating Greensboro Day School (N.C.) 41-40 on Josh
Carvalho's putback at the buzzer. In another semifinal game,
Iolani will take on Roman Catholic (Philadelphia).

** Tsunami Alert **
The Hawaii Tsunami, the Islands' representative in the U.S.
International Soccer League, will field a team for the 1996
season, say club officials. The Tsunami, plagued by financial
strife in 1995, are scheduled to play a full 22-game slate in
1996. With last season's title sponsor GTE Sprint no longer
affiliated with the Tsunami, team representatives are hustling
for sponsors to keep the club afloat for the May 1996 season-
opener. "We need some good will and good cheer from the
community for us to be healthy," said co-owner Manny Menendez.

** Buzzer Bomb Beats Bows **
Jim Williamson banked in a driving, off-balance 10-footer a split
second before the buzzer to give Loyola Maymount an 82-80
triumph
over the University of Hawaii in a Hawaii Nike Festival opening
round game last night at the Special Events Arena. A stunned
crowd of about 4,500 watched the Bows' Danny Furlong miss two
charity tosses with 9.2 seconds. After the second misfire, the
Lions put the ball into the hands of Williamson, who ran a
defender off a screen at the top of the key and drove down the
left lane for his game-winner. Justice Sueing scored 24 points
and grabbed five rebounds for the Bows (2-2). Ime Odouk, a 6-9,
250 pound hulk in the paint, powered his way for 34 points and
seven boards for Loyola Marymount (7-1), which will play for the
tourney title against Nevada-Reno (5-2), a 61-58 over Creighton
(4-2) in an earlier first round game. Hawaii will meet Creighton
in a consolation game this afternoon.
** Wahine Whip Ivy Foes **
With several players hobbled by bumps, bruises, and assorted
injuries, the UH Wahine basketball team torched Princeton 71-49
in a first round game of the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic
yesterday at the Special Events Arena. The injured list for the
Wahine is extensive, with five of the nine available players
suffering from some sort of malady. Despite the injuries, Hawaii
used its superior size and athletic ability to pull away after
leading by just three, 30-27, at the half. Nani Cockett (23
points), Tania Brunton (17), and Kendis Leeburg (16)--all limping
because of leg injuries--provided the bulk of the offensive punch
for Hawaii. Nani Flores snared 10 rebounds. The Wahine (4-2)
will play Illinois-Chicago this evening in a second round game of
the four-team round robin tourney.
** Arceneaux to Utah **
St. Louis High quarterback Darnell Arceneaux, the All-State
offensive player of the year, has made a verbal commitment to
attend the University of Utah next season. A two-time all-state
pick who led the Crusaders to the last three Oahu Prep Bowl
titles, Arceneaux "felt that (Utah) was a place where he could
feel very comfortable," said his mom, Maria. High school players
must wait till February to sign letters of intent.
** Bruins, Jayhawks: Win One for Coach **
Players for Kansas (9-2) and UCLA (7-4), the teams squaring off
at Aloha Stadium next Monday in the 14th Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl,
have a common rallying cry: Let's win for our coach. The head
coaches for both teams will be heading to new grazing grounds
next season. UCLA's Terry Donahue will hang up his whistle and
clipboard after 20 seasons to accept a position as a television
analyst. Kansas' Glen Mason, after lifting Kansas from Big Eight
nobodies to national prominence, has accepted the head coaching
job at Georgia. Said UCLA kicker Greg Andrasick, a former Iolani
Raider player: "This is going to be a battle to see who can win
it for their coach." Kickoff is set for 10:30 a.m. HST.
** Small College Hoops **
It was a good-news/bad-news day for the UH-Hilo basketball
program. The good news was that the Vulcans defeated
Susquehanna
(Pa.) 114-110 last night at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Jayme
Carvalho poured in 26 points to spark Hilo. Brent Eberhard added
20, Marcus Owen 19, Jason Gunnarson 15 and Andy Smith 10. On the
downside, high-scoring senior guards Marcus Rogers and Eric White
were deemed academically ineligible. Unless a followup review
nets different results, both can no longer player for the
Vulcans.
----
In the Hula Hoops Tournament at Cannon Activities Center last
night, BYU-Hawaii lost to Montana State-Northern 71-69. Ionatana
Enosa scored a game high 19 points for the Seasiders (4-3).
Kevin Owens scored the game-winning layup at the buzzer for MSN
(11-3), the 10th ranked team in the NAIA.
** Sports Shorts **
The 16-team Iolani Prep Basketball Classic continued yesterday
with four more first round games. St. Louis nipped Moanalua 50-
49, Iolani topped Roosevelt 53-39, Hilo raced past Leigh
(Calif.), and Roman Catholic (Pa.) pounded Baldwin 86-42. The
tournament moves into the quarterfinal round today.
----
The Northwestern men's and women's swim teams stroked to easy
dual meet victories over the University of Hawaii yesterday at
the Duke Kahanamoku Pool. The Northwestern men outpointed the
Rainbow Kane 157-78 while the women outscored the UH Wahine
176-56.
----
Apparently, the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Classic did not take place
yesterday. Reports on local radio stations yesterday indicated
that the meet, held only when waves at Waimea Bay are a minimum
of 25 feet, received the green light from Classic honcho George
Downing.

** Pipe, World Titles for Slater **
Needing nothing less than a victory to defend his world title,
Floridian Kelly Slater did just that, capturing the Chiemsee
Gerry Lopez Pipe Masters yesterday in 4- to 8-foot surf at the
North Shore of Oahu's Banzai Pipeline. Entering the contest,
Slater was third on the world tour, trailing Makaha's Sunny
Garcia and Californian Rob Machado. Only a victory in the Pipe
Masters would earn Slater his second world title. And a victory
he would get. "I've never felt the zone so much like I did in
this contest," said Slater, who earned $14,000 after defeating
Australian Mark Occhilupo in the final. "I had a lot of
confidence." Capitalizing on that confidence, Slater surfed
masterfully, slashing and tube-riding his way to four of the six
perfect 10-point rides this week.
== Pipe Masters Final Results ==
1. Kelly Slater, $14,000

team, outside hitter Jenny Wilton.

** Aloha Bowl News **
After leading his team against UCLA in next Monday's Aloha Bowl,
Kansas coach Glen Mason will bid adieu to the Jayhawks and their
faithful and head for Georgia, where he has just accepted the
Bulldogs' head coaching job. Mason is not the first Aloha Bowl
coach to move on after the annual Christmas day game. Dennis
Erickson (Washington State 1988), Jack Pardee (Houston 1988),
Dick MacPherson (Syracuse 1990), Bobby Ross (Georgia Tech 1991),
and Dennis Green (Stanford 1991) all departed for other shores
after leading their squads in the Aloha Bowl. "Just call us a
springboard," said Aloha Bowl honcho Lenny Klompus, who says that
the hubbub surrounding Mason's move and UCLA coach Terry
Donahue's retirement will add some glitter to game.
** Semones Chats with vonAppen **
Kahuku football coach Doug Semones met with new UH coach Fred
vonAppen last week but was not offered a job, Semones said
yesterday. Semones, who has led the Red Raiders to a 68-14-2
record in his seven seasons as field boss, said he would consider
an assistant's position at UH if it was offered. "To coach at
the Division I level, that's something to thing about." In
related news, St. Louis coach Cal Lee addressed a gathering at
the Honolulu Quarterback Club yesterday but did not say whether
he would accept a job on vonAppen's staff. Lee said he has
scheduled another meeting with vonAppen to discuss specifics of
the job before making a decision.
** Wallace Opts for Quickness **
UH Riley Wallace has decided that bigger isn't necessarily better
and will start a smaller, quicker lineup in tonight's Nike Early-
Season Tournament first-round game against Loyola Marymount.
For
the first time this season, the Bows' two tallest players, 7-2
Seth Sundberg and 6-11 Ales Zivanovic, will start a game on the
bench. Hawaii's best big player, 6-8 Justice Sueing, will also
come off the bench. "I figure I can bring Justice in to pick us
up, if we need to be picked up," said Wallace, who will start
Alika Smith and Anthony Harris at guard, 6-10 Danny Furlong in
the post, and 6-8 Eric Ambrozich and 6-7 Micah Kroeger at
forward.
** Eight is Enough for Wahine **
The short-handed UH Wahine basketball team (3-2) begins play in
the Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic today with a first round
game against Princeton (7-2). After losing freshman Hedy Liu to
a knee injury and with Tiffany Fujimoto hampered by a leg
ailment, the Wahine have just eight healthy players available for
action. "We'll make do," said UH coach Vince Goo, who still
remembers his 28-4, Big West championship team in 1992 which
played the entire the season with only nine players. "The fewer
players you have, the better off you are."
** Small College Hoops **
Hawaii Pacific defeated Montana State-Northern 92-76 and BYU-
Hawaii topped Hastings (Neb.) 81-60 in first round games of the
Hula Hoops Tournament at Cannon Activities Center in Laie.
Juergen Malbeck scored 25 points for HPU (7-2) and Ionatana Enosa
dropped in 18 for BYUH (4-2). On the Big Island, UH-Hilo fell
86-83 to Northern Michigan. Marcus Rogers led the Vulcans (1-6)
in scoring with 18 points. Eric White added 15, Brent Eberhard
14, and Jason Granger 13.
** Sports Shorts **
In an unconfirmed report, the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Classic will
be run today at Waimea Bay. Surf must be a minimum of 25 feet
for the competition to take place, according to meet director
George Downing. A couple dozen of the world's best big wave
riders have been invited to participate.
----
In high school boys' basketball action, the 16-team Iolani Prep
Classic began yesterday with four first-round games. Greensboro
(N.C.) topped University High 58-43, Punahou routed Kaimuki 58-
37, Kalaheo beat Chubu Okinawa (Japan) 80-58, and St. Joseph
(Calif.) ripped Kamehameha 61-33. First round play continues
today with four more games.

** Garcia Upset **
To win the world surfing title, Makaha's Sunny Garcia will have
to hope for a couple of upsets after he was unexpectedly upended
by Australian Mark Occhilupo in the second round of the Chiemsee
Gerry Lopez Pipe Masters yesterday in 6- to 12-foot surf at the
Banzai Pipeline. Garcia, the current tour points leader, now
must hope that his closest pursuers, defending champ Kelly Slater
of Florida and California's Rob Machado, fall as he did. Said
Garcia: "I never thought that coming in to Hawaii, with the last
event (of the world tour) in my backyard that I would leave it up
to those guys. I give them all the credit in the world if they
can do it." To "do it," Slater must win the event. Machado, if
he advances to the semifinals, also has a shot at the world title
if Slater finishes second or lower at the Pipe. The meet
continues today, surf permitting.
** Tourney Fever for Bows **
Which college basketball team will play in the most regular
season tournaments this season? If you guessed the University of
Hawaii men's team, which will have four tournaments under its
belt by season's end, you were correct. Coach Riley Wallace's
Rainbows have already completed and won the United Airlines
Tipoff Tournament two weeks ago. Tomorrow, UH will enter tourney
number two, the Hawaii Nike Festival, with an opening round game
against Loyola Marymount. On December 27-30, the Rainbows will
compete in the 32nd Rainbow Classic, with a field that includes
Syracuse, Illinois, Rhode Island, Southern Cal, Missouri,
Massachusetts, and North Carolina State. Completing the
tournament slate for Hawaii will be the WAC Conference Tournament
in early March.
** Vulcans Fall **
UH-Hilo fell to Indiana University-Purdue University at
Indianapolis 106-93 in an opening round game of the Coconut Coast
Classic Tournament last night at the Afook-Chinen Civic in Hilo.
Anthony Winburn scored 37 points and Carlos Knox added 34 for the
Metros. Richard Johnson (19 points) and Marcus Owens (18) paced
the Vulcans (1-5), who will take on Northern Michigan (4-1)
tonight.
** Wahine Wins Looong Swim **
Northwestern University swimmer Kari Lydersen won the 4.34 mile
Hawaiian Christmas Looong Distance Swim yesterday in the waters
off of Waikiki. "She's awesome," said runner-up Rick Heltzel,
who finished 18 seconds behind Lydersen's winning time of 1 hour,
37 minutes, 28 seconds. "She had about 50 feet on me at the
turnaround but she was too strong on the way back." Sixty-six
swimmers entered the event, which began at Kaimana Beach next to
the Waikiki Natatorium, proceeded to a turnaround point near the
entrance to the Ala Wai Harbor, and returned to Kaimana. Five of
the top ten finishers were women.

** VonAppen Talks Philosophy **
In an interview with the Honolulu Advertiser, recently-hired
University of Hawaii football coach Fred vonAppen discussed his
goals and philosophy. In a nutshell, this is what he said:
--Hands-on philosophy: "I'd want to coach the coaches and be
hands-on with the players. Unless the coaching tower is tall
enough to so that I can see the ocean, then I'm going to stay
on the grass."
--Emphasis: "We're in the business of teaching responsibility.
We're going to work hard in everything. I'm a nut on work. I
want the sweat dripping off the posterior--mine and theirs."
--The '96 Rainbows: "Expect a club that will play hard for 60
minutes. There'll be a period of regression, I'm sure. But
the fans can expect us to work hard and get better every week."
--Personal selling point to recruits: "Wisdom and experience from
having been around the block more than once. I've coached at
every level except Pop Warner. That may be somewhere in the
future."
--Quirks: "I'm going to be a stickler for what the locker room
looks like, what the meeting room looks like. No Coke cups or
banana peels or apple cores strewn around so somebody else has
to pick 'em up. One of my parents had to do that and I don't
want to leave that to somebody else."

** Benjamin to Run Bow Offense **
Yesterday, former Stanford and San Francisco 49er quarterback Guy
Benjamin accepted the position of offense coordinator for the
University of Hawaii football team. He is the first assistant
hired by new Rainbow head coach Fred vonAppen. Currently the
offensive coordinator for the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World
Football League, Benjamin will oversee the installation of the
49ers' "West Coast offense," an attack based on short passes to
backs, progression routes by receivers, and a ground game
predicated on sweeps and traps. Said Benjamin: "I fully expect
that we'll run that offense as well as the 49ers do. At least
that's the standards we'll demand from the players." Benjamin
has local ties, having once worked summers at the Pineapple Hill
restaurant in Lahaina. In addition, his wife was raised in
Hawaii. "I'm obviously very excited," said Benjamin.
** Hawaii Winter Baseball League **
Volcano Division champ Maui captured the Hawaii Winter Baseball
League championship by edging Outrigger Division top dog Honolulu
4-3 last night before 1,746 fans at Hans L'Orange Park in
Waipahu. Former University of Hawaii pitcher Joey Vierra earned
the victory, spacing out seven hits in seven innings of work.
Alvie Shepherd pitched that final inning and a third to get the
save. Preston Wilson had two hits and David Lamp drove in two
runs to spark the Stingrays' offensive attack.
** Former Bow Scores in Japan **
Former UH football player David Stant is the head football coach
of the Recruit Co. Sea Gulls, who compete in the top division of
the Japan Industrial League. As coach and business executive for
the organization, Stant, a Kahuku High grad, earns a base salary
of $200,000, twice as much as the head coach at UH earns. Said
Stant, who led the Gulls to a 6-1 record and an appearance in
this year's Japan Super Bowl: "My former teammates and coaches
are surprised at where I ended up. Nobody ever thought I'd be a
coach someday, especially over here in Japan."
** Wahine Softball News **
The UH Wahine softball team, which begins its season in February,
will attempt to earn another Big West Conference title in 1996
but will have to do so without several key players. Offensive
sparkplugs Kathy Turner (transferred) and Laynie Sueyasu (knee
injury) will not suit up for the Wahine this season. What's
more, ace pitcher Brooke Wilkins has returned to Australia to
train with the national team in preparation for the 1996

** Lee a Rainbow Assistant? **
In a move that he says "isn't to cover my heinie," new University
of Hawaii football coach Fred vonAppen offered St. Louis High
School coach Cal Lee a spot as a Rainbow assistant yesterday. "I
definitely have an interest in Cal joining our staff," said
vonAppen. "I think he's a winner in every respect. He's
certainly proved that at St. Louis." Lee said he was flattered
by the offer and said he will mull over the possibility of
leaving St. Louis, where he is athletic director and the honcho
of the highly successful Crusader program that has dominated
local high school football in recent years, capturing the last
ten ILH and Oahu Prep Bowl titles. VonAppen also met with
members of former coach Bob Wagner's staff yesterday. It is not
clear if he has offered jobs to any of them.
** Elam, Tuinei to Pro Bowl **
Former UH players Jason Elam and Mark Tuinei were named to the
NFL's Pro Bowl squads that will meet on February 4 at Aloha

selected to the elite squad for the first time after converting
35 of 35 extra points and 27 of 33 field goal attempts this
season for the Denver Broncos. Tuinei, the starting left tackle
and a 13-year veteran for the Dallas Cowboys, was selected to the
Pro Bowl squad for the second consecutive year.

announced yesterday. UH recruit Jenny Roberts of Calvary Chapel
High (Calif.) also received honorable mention.

** New Bow Grid Boss Welcomed **
With time against him, Fred vonAppen is moving quickly to re-
model the program he has acquired as the new University of Hawaii
football coach. "We're not going to be a double-slot option
team, I can tell you that," said vonAppen. "That's not gonna be
the background of the staff that comes in." Addressing a crowd
of media and university personnel, the 53-year-old vonAppen said
he is in the process of assembling his coaching staff but
mentioned no specific names. With 15 jobs since 1967, VonAppen
also defended his apparent lack of continuous employment. "All
experience is good; some's better than others." he said. "If (a
head coach) moves, you either stay or go. If a (head coach) gets
fired, you have to go. Some of the moves I chose to make; some
just happened.
** Azuma Pau at Roosevelt **
Roosevelt High School is looking for a new football coach after
Jeff Azuma announced his resignation yesterday. The head coach
for the Rough Riders the past three seasons, Azuma, who is
leaving for personal reasons, led Roosevelt to a 5-1 record in
1995. "We will miss the things he taught the kids like having
the right attitude and going to college after high school," said
Roosevelt athletic director Rodney Iwasaki.

University of Hawaii Wahine players Angelica Ljungquist and Robyn
AH Mow were named American Volleyball Coaches Association first-
team All-Americans today. Ljungquist, a junior middle blocker
from Sweden, earned second-team All-America honors the past two

to unnamed sources, will hire former Stanford ('77) and San

year, the highest finisher count of any marathon in the world in
1995. The number also broke the former Honolulu record of 25,801

** VonAppen Speaks **
Fred vonAppen, still awaiting official Board of Regents
confirmation that he will be the next head football coach at the
University of Hawaii, has begun moving forth nevertheless,
announcing his plans for the Rainbows. VonAppen, who must
complete his commitment to the University of Colorado, which will
play in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day, said he will install
the "West Coast offense" employed by the San Francisco 49ers and
will make a strong commitment to recruit local players. "We have
to make a concerted effort to keep Island guys at home," he said.
As for assistants, vonAppen said he'll hire the best coaches he
can find, which may include several current UH assistants and the
three Lee brothers: Cal, head coach at St. Louis High; Ron, St.
Louis offensive coordinator; and Tommy, quarterback coach at the
University of Utah. VonAppen, who will make Hawaii his 15th stop
in his nearly 30 years in coaching, squelched talk that he will
stay just a few years and then move on. "I'm not looking
beyond," he said. "Pro football was never the ultimate. I want
to work on a college campus. I was trained as an educator.
That's what I am."
** Ruffin to Philly **
Former University of Hawaii basketball player Trevor Ruffin
joined the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers recently, inking a guaranteed
one-year contract that will earn him $225,000. Ruffin, who
played for the Phoenix Suns last season, started this season with
Paok in the Greek Pro League. He had a contract for $750,000
there. Homesick, Ruffin sought a release from the Greek team and
returned home to Buffalo, New York, where he was contacted by the
NBA club. In his 1995 season debut with the 76ers on Saturday
night, Ruffin scored 10 points in 19 minutes of action.
