** Impact Guard to Sign with Bows **
A 6-2 shooting guard described as an "impact player," said
yesterday that he will sign a letter of intent to play basketball
for the University of Hawaii. Anthony Carter, a junior-to-be who
averaged 27.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for Saddleback
College (Calif). last season, said he was impressed with UH on
his recent visit to the islands and would sign with the Rainbows.
A unanimous choice for the California JC All-Star team, Carter
was named the national junior college player of the year by one
publication. "He's an impact player," said Mark Mayemura, editor
of USA Recruiting magazine. "He can put up numbers like (former
UH player) Trevor Ruffin. He can create his own shots; he can
shoot from the outside; he can also dunk on the big boys."

** Vball Bows Ready **
Hoping for a similar outcome of a match earlier in the season,
the UH men's volleyball team will take on UC-Santa Barbara in a
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation postseason tournament
semifinal match on Friday. In February, Hawaii traveled to
California and crushed the No. 3 Gauchos 15-7, 15-13, 15-5. "We
ripped them," said UH coach Mike Wilton. Now 17-7, UCSB hopes to
give the top-ranked Rainbows (26-1) a better match. "It's a
great opportunity for us," said Gaucho coach Ken Preston. "We
don't have a lot to lose." At stake is a spot in Saturday's MPSF
championship match against the winner of the other semifinal
between UCLA and Cal State-Northridge. Semifinal and final
matches will be played at the sold-out Special Events Arena.

** Chaminade Coach/AD Pau **
Dan Doucette yesterday tendered his resignation as basketball
coach and athletic director at Chaminade. Doucette, the Pacific
West Conference coach of the year for 1995, will reportedly
accept a head basketball coaching job at Central Missouri State.
He endured a controversy-filled 1996 campaign with the
Silverswords, who ended up 4-22. In three seasons at Chaminade,
Doucette's teams posted a 22-51 record. A search for his
replacement will begin immediately. While Doucette was on his
way out, three players are headed to the Islands after signing
letters of intent to play for the Silverswords. The three are
Roman Rivera, a 6-3 guard from Canada College; 6-9 center Matt
Umbarger from Cuesta (Calif.) College; and 6-4 guard William
Antonio from Allan Hancock College (Calif.)

over a four-game span against Chaminade last week. She was also
flawless in the field, handling ten chances without a miscue.
----

** Japanese Citizenship for Akebono **
Sumo grand champion Akebono, also known as Chad Rowan of
Waimanalo, was granted Japanese citizenship yesterday. "I was
glad to hear it," said the 6-foot-8, 460-pound giant-of-a-man who
in 1993 became the first non-Japanese to earn the rank of
yokozuna. "I'd like to make a fresh start as a Japanese and
devote myself to sumo." Akebono has sat out the last three
tournaments because of a nagging knee injury and is under
pressure to do well in the upcoming May tourney or retire. He
now joins three other former Hawaii residents--Jesse Kuhaulua,
Salevaa Atisanoe, and Fiamalu Penitani--who sought and gained
Japanese naturalization.
** Bows Want Privacy **
In order to avoid the media posse pursuing his team, UH men's
volleyball coach Mike Wilton has ordered closed practices for the
remainder of the week as his Rainbows prepare for their Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation semifinal playoff match against UC-
Santa Barbara on Friday night at a soldout Special Events Arena.
Concerned because his team "played horribly Saturday night" in
its victory against a determined Pepperdine squad, Wilton has
barred the media from practices for the first time in his tenure
as Rainbow coach. "I feel like we've pulled away from what we
want to try to do," said Wilton. "I think we need to sequester
right now." UCLA will take on Cal State-Northridge in another
semi at the SEA on Friday with the semifinal winners meeting on
Saturday night for the MPSF title and an automatic berth in the
NCAA Final Four.

** Bows Lose it Ninth **
Freshman reliever balked in the winning run in the bottom of the
ninth in Hawaii's 6-5 Western Athletic Conference baseball loss
to San Diego State yesterday at Smith Field in San Diego. The
Rainbows entered the final frame leading 5-3, but the Aztecs
rallied for three runs to win it. "Our defense cost us the
game," said UH coach Les Murakami, who saw his team fall to 29-20
overall and 12-12 in the WAC. "The winning run was unearned. We
had an error and didn't execute on a double play." San Diego
State improved to 30-18 and 15-9. Hawaii returns home for a
three-game series this weekend against Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.
** Nakama Takes Mid-Pac Title **

** Katz Propels Bows Over Waves **
Yuval Katz, perhaps out to prove that he is the best player in
the conference, performed in a dominating fashion last night,
rocketing 39 kills to the floor in Hawaii's 15-6, 15-13, 15-10
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation first-round playoff victory
over Pepperdine at the Special Events Arena. With a sellout
crowd of 10,225 chanting "MVP, MVP, MVP," Katz--shunned by MPSF
coaches for top player honors--delivered a magnificent
performance, handling 40 percent of Hawaii's sets for a superb
.492 kill percentage. "He wanted every single ball," said setter
Eric Pichel. "I've never seen him want it more." The top-
ranked Rainbows (26-1) now advance to a tournament semifinal
clash against No. 4 UC-Santa Barbara this Friday at the SEA.
UCLA hosts Cal State-Northridge in the other.

** Bows Hope to Surf Over Improved Waves **
An improved version of the Pepperdine men's volleyball team
(15-10) will take on top-ranked Hawaii (25-1) in Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation first-round playoff match tonight at a sold-out
Special Events Arena. Earlier this season, the Rainbows toasted
the Waves, who only mustered 20 points while getting swept in
three games. However, Pepperdine has improved since that early-
February meeting, thanks to some changes in its lineup, most
notably the insertion of Punahou grad J.J. Riley at setter and 6-
6 hitter George Roumain. "If we pass and can sideout with them,
maybe we can wear them down," said Riley. "We'll see if maybe
they crack."
** Hawaii Loses in Extra Innings **
Hawaii lost a 4-3 14-inning heartbreaker to San Diego State in a
Western Athletic Conference baseball game last night at Smith
Field in San Diego. In the bottom of the 14th, Travis Lee
drilled a Daven Hermosura offering to right field to drive in
Kalin Founds from second base for the game-winning run. Earlier,
Hawaii (28-19 overall and 11-11, WAC) had rallied for two runs in
the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Game
two of the three game series will be played today.
** Tennis Titles to Puns, Warriors **
Punahou captured the boys' crown and Kamehameha the girls' at the
39th Hawaii High School Athletic Association state tennis
championships yesterday at the Wailea Tennis Club on Maui. The
titles were the sixth straight for the Buffanblu and the third
consecutive for the Warriors. In singles competition, Chris Ma of
Punahou and Lisa Kahikina of Kamehameha lived up to their top-
seeded rankings as each won titles. Ma defeated topped
Lahainaluna's Malino Oda, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, in the boys' final, and
Kahikina cruised past Kahuku's Tara Porter, 6-4, 6-1, in the
girls'. In doubles, Baldwin's Brayden Corniel and Craig Nunokawa
were the top boys duo, while Kamehameha's Kaleinani Kowalski and
Keawe Ayau captured their third straight girls' title.
** Moanalua, Radford Take Track Titles **
The Moanalua girls and the Radford boys raced to the team titles
at the OIA Track and Field Championships last night at the Kaiser
High track. Na Menehune, bolstered by four-event winner Desiree
Holstein, outpointed runner-up Kahuku 61-44 to grab the girls
championship. Holstein, a 5-7, 127-pound senior, won the triple,
high, and long jumps and the 100 meter dash. In the boys'
competition, Radford's Bruce Taylor also turned in a sterling
performance, capturing the triple and high jump events and
anchoring two winning relay teams. The Rams easily outdistanced
Mililani, 62-39 to take the team title.
** Local Doctor a Bengal Owner **
Thanks to a successful medical career and shrewd investing,
retired Honolulu doctor Edison Miyawaki Sr. now owns a quarter of
the Cincinnati Bengals NFL football franchise, at a price tag of
over $40 million. Miyawaki, who said he won't meddle in the
player selection process in today's NFL draft, did admit that
he'd use his influence to help island athletes get a shot at the
NFL. "I have an opportunity to give Hawaii kids a chance to play
in the NFL," he said. "And I'm going to use it."
** Sports Shorts **
Casey Nakama surged to a two-stroke lead after the second round

at 140 while first-round leaders Keith Kollmeyer and Brian Sasada
are three back at 141.
----
UH-Hilo golfer Stu Cohen finished fifth in the NCAA District 8

** MPSF Stars Named; Katz Dis'ed **
The coaches of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation have made
their opinions clear. And as a group, they don't seem to have
much respect for top-ranked Hawaii's players--at least based on
the All-Conference team that they selected and announced today.
In a somewhat surprising development, Hawaii's Yuval Katz was
edged for conference player of the year honors by Punahou grad
Stein Metzger, the setter for No. 3 UCLA. Katz, an All-American
as a freshman in 1995 and this season's national leader in kills
and aces, was the only Hawaii player named to the 1996 MPSF
first-team. Setter Eric Pichel and outside hitter Aaron Wilton
were named to the second team and Naveh Milo earned third team
honors. UOP's Joe Wortmann was selected as coach of the year.
The Rainbows (25-1) will meet Pepperdine (15-10) in a conference
first-round playoff match tomorrow night at a sold-out Special
Events Arena.
** Tomey and 'Cats to Hawaii in '98 **
Former UH football coach Dick Tomey will bring his Arizona
Wildcats to play the University of Hawaii at Aloha Stadium in
1998. Tomey, who coached the Rainbows from 1977 to 1986, is in
his tenth season as the head of the Arizona program. The game is
set of Sept 5., the season-opener for both teams.
** Bows Hope to End Well **
While all hasn't been consistently well for the UH baseball team,
head coach Les Murakami and his Rainbows are striving to end the
1996 season with a string of victories. Currently four games
behind conference leader Cal State-Northridge (15-6, WAC) with
nine league games remaining, the fourth-place Rainbows (11-10)
begin their quest to nudge their way up the WAC standings with a
3-game weekend series against San Diego State (13-8) that begins
today in San Diego. Mark Johnson (6-3), Paul Ah Yat (9-4) and
Robby Robinson (4-6) are the scheduled starters for Hawaii.

Keith Kollmeyer and Brian Sasada both fired 4-under 68s to share

----
The UH football team will conduct its first 11-on-11 scrimmage of

Hawaii Pacific split a women's college softball doubleheader with
Chaminade yesterday at the Sea Warriors' windward field. The

Sea Warriors, ranked third in the NAIA, rebounded to win the
nightcap 6-0.

** Local Airwave Wars? **
Oceanic Cablevision has tendered a tempting bid to land
University of Hawaii sports broadcast rights. Currently, KFVE-
Channel 5 has the contract with UH but that will expire in June
1997. While KFVE officials have offered UH approximately $2.5
million for a five-year extension, Oceanic has reportedly thrown
a much more lucrative deal on the table. However, despite its
tempting financial inducement, Oceanic may see its bid hampered
because of a lack of a full-time production staff and equipment
for remote broadcasts. In addition, if Oceanic receives the UH
contract, local residents who do not subscribe to Oceanic would
be unable to see Rainbow sports broadcasts. UH athletic director
Hugh Yoshida said he wants to have a broadcast contract deal
completed by the end of the summer.

** Freitas: Still Going For It **
Despite being an option quarterback throughout his high school
and college career, University of Hawaii signal-caller Glenn
Freitas hasn't tossed his senior season into the tank. Instead,
he is making a strong bid to earn the starting quarterback
position to run the intricate "West Coast" offense, an attack
predicated on precise, short- and medium-range passing. "It's
tough, but I'm not going to quit just because a new system came
in," said Freitas, a former Waianae High star and a spot-starter
for the Bows in the past couple seasons. "You have to work
through it. I wasn't raised to be a quitter." Also in the
quarterback hunt are junior Johnny Macon and red-shirt freshman
Hunter Young. "They're adjusting better than I expected," said
offensive coordinator Guy Benjamin of the trio. "It's different
for them, but they're doing a decent job."
** Bows-Bruins Rain Victims **
The college baseball game between Hawaii and UCLA at Jackie
Ronbinson Field in Los Angeles was cancelled yesterday because of
rain. The Rainbows were leading 2-1 in the bottom of the first
inning when umpires halted play because of a slippery turf.
Hawaii now will travel south to San Diego to take on San Diego
State in a three-game series this weekend. Mark Johnson (6-3) is
the scheduled starter for Friday's opener.
** Ex-Bow Charged **
Former University of Hawaii football player Junior Tagoai was
arrested early this morning for his involvement in a fight at the
Blue Zebra nightclub at Restaurant Row. Tagoai, who earned
outstanding defensive player honors at the 1992 Holiday Bowl,
allegedly struck a security officer in the face in the
altercation. Tagoai was preparing to leave for the Cincinnati
Bengals' minicamp next month.
** Katz Ohana to Visit Oahu **
Among the 10,225 fans in attendance at this Saturday's Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball playoff match between
top-ranked Hawaii and Pepperdine will be two people very familiar
to Rainbow All-American hitter Yuval Katz--his parents, Sara and
Meir, who will leave their home in Kibbutz Ein Hamifraz, Israel,
and travel 8,593 miles to watch their son play a college match
for the first time. Said Katz: "I've tried to explain what it's
like playing here in front of these great fans. But they really
don't understand...yet. Nobody in the world treats (volleyball)
like the fans do in Hawaii."
** Nazarino Leads Vuls **
Sacred Hearts grad Darlani Nazarino is one players responsible
for the success of this year's UH-Hilo Wahine softball team. A
former walk-on, Nazarino worked her way into Vulcans' starting
lineup as designated hitter where she has posted a .284 batting
average with 15 RBIs. Yesterday, Nazarino and her UHH teammates
lost to Cal State-Dominguez Hills 3-1 at Carson, Calif.
** State Prep Tennis Tourney Set **
The 39th Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Tennis
Championships begins today at the Waialea Tennis Club on Maui.
The Kamehameha girls and Punahou boys are defending state
titlists. Kamehameha's Lisa Kahikina (singles) and Keawe Ayau
and Kaleinani Kowalski (doubles) are the top-seeded girls. In
boys' competition, Punahou's Chris Ma is the top-ranked singles
player while Baldwin's Brayden Corniel and Craig Nunokawa are
ranked No. 1 in doubles.

doubleheaders this weekend against Chaminade.

The UH-Hilo volleyball coach Sharon Peterson announced yesterday
that middle blocker Heather Campbell, a 5-11 transfer from Fresno
State, will play for the Vulcans next season.

With only pride at stake, the UH-Hilo and Hawaii Pacific baseball
teams will conclude their seasons with a four-game series this
weekend in Hilo. The Vulcans (9-28) and Sea Warriors (10-20-1)
have battled through tough seasons. "We're playing for Hawaii
pride," said HPU rookie coach Alan Sato.
----
Also enduring trying 1996 seasons have been the UH men's and
women's tennis teams. The Wahine (12-19) and Kane (11-13) begin
play in the Western Athletic Conference Championship tournament
today at Fresno, Calif. "Inexperience has hurt us this year,"

** Welcome to Fred's World **
An enthusiasm-charged atmosphere marked the first day of spring
football practice for the University of Hawaii football team and
its new coach, Fred vonAppen. Executing an array of non-
traditional drills involving softballs, hoops, and huge rubber
balls, the 100-plus players on-hand were fired up to be a part of
the new beginning for Rainbow football. Said defensive back Doe
Henderson: "There was a lot of enthusiasm out there. That's what
the coaches brought with them. They're enthused. We're
enthused." One of the highlights of the day was a four-on-four
drill where the offensive players had three downs to advance the
football ten yards. Celebrations were aplenty when a runner
scored or made a hefty gain or when a defender leveled an
advancing ball toter. "I was not displeased," said vonAppen when
asked to sum up the day.
** Milo to Return **
UH volleyball player Naveh Milo squelched rumors that he would be
leaving the Rainbows at the end of the season when he announced
yesterday that he would return to Hawaii for the 1996-97
campaign. A sophomore outside hitter from Israel, Milo has been
contemplating a bid to hook up with a professional team after the
completion of the current season. All-American Yuval Katz,
Hawaii's go-to attacker, has all but confirmed that he will play
for pay next season. Meanwhile, Milo, Katz and the rest of the
top-ranked Rainbow team (25-1) are preparing for Saturday night's
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation first-round playoff match
against No. 12 Pepperdine (15-10) at a sold-out Special Events
Arena.
** HPU Signs Three **
After seeing 7-1 center Juergen Malbeck handcuffed by fouls in
the NAIA Championship Tournament, Hawaii Pacific basketball coach
Tony Sellitto lived up to his vow to recruit athletes in the 6-4
to 6-7 range when he announced yesterday the signing of three
players who fit that mold. The three are 6-4, 180-pound guard
Marlon Short from Skyline (Calif.) JC, a "big-time scorer"
according to Sellitto; 6-7, 225-pound forward Corey Reincke from
Kellogg (Mich.) Community College; and 6-5 forward Stacy Nolan
out of Cerritos (Calif.) College.
** POW Honors for Ah Yat **
Paul Ah Yat was named the Western Athletic Conference West player
of the week for his outstanding performance for the Rainbow
baseball team over nationally-ranked Cal State-Northridge over
the weekend. A senior southpaw, Ah Yat had a hand in the Bows'
three victories over the Matadors, as he was credited with two
wins and a save. Today, the Hawaii (28-18) will take on UCLA
(23-15) at Jackie Robinson Stadium on the Bruins' campus. The
game will serve as a warm-up for the Rainbows' three-game series
at San Diego State this weekend.

** Bows Outslug Matadors **
On a day when pitchers from both sides were pummelled, Hawaii had
enough staying power to eke out an incident-filled 11-9 Western
Athletic Conference win over nationally-ranked Cal State-
Northridge yesterday at Rainbow Stadium. With pitcher Robby
Robinson cruising along with an 11-1 lead through seven innings,
the bottom nearly fell out for the Bows. The always dangerous
Matadors rallied for eight runs in the eighth before Paul Ah Yat,
normally a starter, entered the fray. He mowed down five of the
six Matador batters he faced in the final two frames to earn his
first save of the season. Offensively, second baseman Jody
Napuunoa and catcher Kenn Wakakuwa had three hits apiece for the
Rainbows, who improved to 28-18 overall and 11-10 in the WAC.
Seventh-ranked Northridge, which had three players and coach Mike
Batesole ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct, fell to 37-10 and
15-6.
** VonAppen Era Commences **
The coaching regime of new UH football coach Fred vonAppen
officially gets underway today when the Rainbows begin spring
football drills. VonAppen, who says his goal is to have a
winning season in 1996, promised an all-business approach during
spring ball. "We'll be regimented and theatrical," he said.
According to the first-year coach, players not directly involved
in drills are expected to know what plays are being executed and
must be prepared to provide an evaluation of how the player at
his position carried out an assigned task. "Concentration is
paramount," said vonAppen. "We don't want anyone milling around.
Practices, which will run from 4 to 6:15 p.m., are open to the
public. No spring game will be held this year.

** Hawaii Wins Home Finale **
A Special Events Arena throng of 10,020 came to see Hawaii top
California, 15-8, 15-6, 15-8, and to bid aloha to three Rainbow
volleyball seniors last night. The match, which was deemed an
exhibition because the Bears are a college club team, marked the
end of the regular season for the 'Bows, who will host either
Pepperdine or Cal State-Northridge next Saturday in a Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation first-round playoff duel. "We're
definitely ready," said senior Mike Kantor, who along with fellow
reserve Troy Hotz and starting setter Eric Pichel, were honored
by fans in a pre-game ceremony and a post-match walkabout. Last
night's crowd upped Hawaii's home attendance total to 134,361 for
the season, a men's college volleyball record, and with 11,000 of
the UH Wahine's mark.
** Bows, Matadors Split Again **
Just like the night before, the UH baseball team split a
doubleheader with WAC West leader Cal State-Northridge last night
at Rainbow Stadium. Behind the pitching of Troy Yoshimasu, who
tossed three innings of scoreless relief, the Rainbows notched a
4-0 win in the opener, a continuation of a game suspended by
rain in the fifth inning on March 13. Kelly Konishi's three-run
homer in the fifth was the big blow. In the second game, the
Matadors ripped five Hawaii pitchers for 18 hits in a 17-5
blowout. The 'Bows are now 27-18 overall and 10-10 in the WAC
while Northridge is 37-9 and 15-5. The series concludes with a
single game this afternoon.
** Split for Wahine **
The UH Wahine split a softball doubleheader with UH-Hilo
yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Wahine (28-19)
won the first game 8-7 and lost the second 7-6. The Vulcans, now
off to the Mainland for a 12-day road trip, are 23-14.
** Nakanelua Hawaii's Swiftest **
Former Kamehameha track star Kelsey Nakanelua defended his title
in the Hawaii's Fastest Human event yesterday at a hot and muggy
Alexander Field on the Punahou campus. Nakanelua, who defeated
two-time champion Matt Harding to grab the title last year,
yesterday edged former Lutheran High sprinter Jummane Washington
in a photo finish. Both were clocked in 10.9. "My start was
absolutely atrocious," said Nakanelua, a standout hurdler for the
Warriors in the late 80s. "I actually should not have won the
race. But I'll take it."
** Ulufale Waits for Draft Call **
Former Campbell High football player Mike Ulufale, who went on to
become a standout at BYU, is expected to be chosen in first
handful of rounds when the National Football League conducts its
annual player draft next Saturday and Sunday. A 6-5, 282-pound
defensive lineman, Ulufale impressed scouts with a 4.72 clocking
in the 40-yard dash. Several other players with Hawaii ties
will also be anxiously awaiting draft day calls, including
offensive lineman Patrick Kesi (Washington, Farrington),

Hemuli (BYU, Kalaheo) and defensive end Troy Bailey (Oregon, St.

** Bows Bash Bears **
The top-ranked UH men's volleyball team clubbed California, a
non-NCAA club team, 15-3, 15-12, 15-7, in front of a festive
Special Events Arena crowd of 7,447 last night. UH coach Mike
Wilton used the opportunity to clear his bench and to put his
three seniors--Eric Pichel, Troy Hotz, and Mike Kantor--in the
spotlight. Despite being victimized, the California players were
thrilled to have the opportunity to take part in the Rainbow
hysteria. Said Cal setter Chris Hopkins: "This was one of the
best experiences of my life. I've never felt so much energy
playing volleyball. Even football and basketball aren't treated
like this back home." Following the match, a mini-riot ensued
outside the area when autograph-seeking fans mobbed Rainbow
players. No one was hurt, but Honolulu Police officers were
summoned to restore order and to escort players from the area.
The two teams will meet again tonight in another game that will
not count against either team's record.
** Split for Baseball Bows **
Thanks to Paul Ah Yat's three-hit shutout, the UH baseball team
salvaged a doubleheader split with Cal State-Northridge last
night with a Rainbow Stadium crowd of 1,839 in attendance. In
the opening game, the WAC West-leading Matadors slammed Rainbow
ace Mark Johnson for six runs in the sixth inning to erase a 3-0
deficit and notch a 6-3 triumph over the Rainbows. In the
nightcap, Ah Yat was masterful, striking out four and allowing
just one base on balls to lead the home team to a 6-0 win. After
the split, Hawaii is 26-17 overall and 9-9 in the Western
Athletic Conference, and CSN is 14-4 and 36-8. A doubleheader is
scheduled for today.
** State Titles for McLachlin, Au **
Punahou's Parker McLachlin and Kamehameha's Elisha Au captured
state high school golf titles yesterday on the Big Island.
McLachlin, only a junior, fired a dazzling 6-under 66 to breeze
to a seven stroke victory in the boys' individual competition and
to lead the Buffanblu to the team title. Au, the girls' runner-
up in 1995, cruised to a 5-stroke victory this year with rounds
of 78 and 77. See Scoreboard section for team and individual
scores.
** Wahine to Face Early Season Tests **
The UH Wahine will see how they measure up from the get-go when
they take part in the NACWAA Volleyball Classic on Aug. 23 and
24. In addition to Hawaii (31-1 last year), the four-team
tournament will include defending national champion Nebraska
(32-1), No. 6 Florida (35-2), and Illinois State (21-13). The
Wahine just returned from a training trip to Japan where they
worked out with squads from Hitachi, Nittaidai, and Odakyu. In
addition, UH coach Dave Shoji announced that two former
Kamehameha stars, Aven Lee and Shelly Kim, will try out for the
team as walk-ons.
** Garcia Takes Rip Pro **
Hampered by an aching shoulder injured in an arm-wrestling bout
with buddy John Shimooka, Makaha's Sunny Garcia persevered,
capturing the Rip Curl Pro surf meet in 2 to 4-foot waves at
Johanna Beach, Australia yesterday. "The pain was real bad,"
said Garcia, but he fought through the torment to defeat
Florida's Todd Holland in the quarterfinals, California's Shane
Beschen in the semifinals, and Aussie Todd Prestage in the
finals. For winning the event, the third of 15 on this year's
world tour, Garcia earned $14,000 and moved into the top spot in
the pro rankings.

Hawaii Pacific swept a softball doubleheader from UH-Hilo
yesterday at the Sea Warriors' windward field. Ranked No. 3 in
the NAIA, HPU (25-9) won the first game 5-2 and the second 8-0.
The Vulcans, who play a doubleheader against the UH Wahine today,
fell to 22-13.
----
Former UH football player Joe Onosai finished fourth in the
Strongman World Series in Sydney, Australia. The ex-Rainbow
offensive lineman set a world record by hoisting a 407-pound log
overhead. Onosai will now prepare for the Atlanta Summer
Olympics, where he will compete in the hammer throw event for
Western Samoa.
----
Mired in financial doldrums, the UH-Hilo athletic program has
faced a string of budget cuts in the last year. According the
Vulcan athletic director Bill Trumbo, a UHH-sponsored kids summer
program has been cancelled and the budget to fund recruiting
costs for Vulcan coaches has been slashed drastically. "We're
really in a hole," said Trumbo. "We keep struggling to keep the
program alive."
----
The Waikiki Beach Boys will host a Ironman/woman canoe race that
will begin and end at Magic Island. Approximately 70 men's and
women's crews are entered in the 12-mile event that will extend
to the buoy off of Diamond Head and back.
----
The 1996 Mid-Pac Open golf tournament is set to run next Thursday
through Sunday at the Mid-Pacific Country Club at Lanikai.
Brandon Kop is the defending champion.

** Bow Gridders Prepping for Spring Ball **
New UH coach Fred vonAppen will greet 100-plus Rainbow football
hopefuls when spring practice begins on Monday. Said vonAppen:
"All the running, lifting, and drills we've been going through so
far have been insightful, but incomplete. Completion of the
mosaic is they have to go out and play football." Determining
the starting quarterback will be among vonAppen's goals in the
next several weeks. Returnees Glenn Freitas and Johnny Macon are
expected to battle redshirt freshman Hunter Young for the top
signal-caller position. All three, recruited to run Bob Wagner's
spread option attack, must now learn the intricacies of
vonAppen's "West Coast Offense." Shoring up the defense, ranked
near the bottom of several NCAA statistical categories last
season, is also a priority. "I think everybody is excited to get
out there and get to work," said vonAppen.
** Alexio versus Tyson? **
With no viable contenders in sight, world heavyweight kickboxing
champion Dennis Alexio has issued a challenge to heavyweight
boxing kingpin Mike Tyson in what would be "the biggest grossing
sporting event in the history of mankind." Speaking at a press
conference at the Planet Hollywood restaurant in Waikiki
yesterday, Alexio said he'd be willing to forgo the use of his
lethal legs if Tyson were skeptical. Meanwhile, Alexio (61-1)
has another bout to tend to first. On May 11 at Blaisdell Arena,
he is scheduled to meet European kickboxing champ Stephan
Reveillon, a 6-foot-2, 217 pounder with a 36-2 record. "He's
been training at a Thai camp," said Alexio, "so I expect him to
be a very formidable opponent." Alexio, 37, has been idle since
December 1 when he knocked out Dennis "Hurricane" Lane only 36-
seconds into the first round.
** Serve Serves 'Bows Well **
While Yuval Katz's powerful attacks at the net have UH volleyball
foes scrambling for cover, the 6-5 outsider hitter's jump serves
make them quiver with fear. For that matter, the jump serve has
been an effective weapon used by all UH players. Three 'Bows--
Katz, Naveh Milo, and Eric Pichel--are in the top 10 nationally
in aces per game. Teammates Sivan Leoni, Jason Ring, Aaron
Wilton, and Kahinu Lee are not far behind in aces registered. As
a team, the Bows have tallied over 200 aces, more than double the
amount registered by opponents. And even when not leading to
immediate points, Hawaii's 60 mph serves may prompt poorly placed
passes by opponents that give the Rainbows a defensive advantage.
Said Milo: "When you have a good jump serve, you make the passer
on the other side lose confidence. Sometimes before I serve I
see they are scared. Even if I hit the ball not so hard they
have no confidence. It's enough." The Rainbows (25-1) will
unleash their powerful service attack on California (15-10)
tonight and tomorrow at the Special Events Arena.
** Honma Has Hot Stick **
Although he's only 5-11, 165 pounds, Neal Honma has been the big
man in the Rainbow baseball team's lineup in recent games. Last
weekend against Sacramento State, the switch-hitting Honma ripped
11 hits in 17 plate appearances to raise his season average to
.351, second best to Chris Garnett's team-leading .355. Against
the Hornets, he became only the fifth UH player to hit for the
cycle in Hawaii's 15-6 victory last Sunday afternoon. Honma
hopes to continue his hot hitting this weekend when Hawaii (25-16
overall and 8-8, conference) hosts WAC West leader Cal State-
Northridge (34-7 and 13-3) in a five-game set. A doubleheader
tonight will kick off the series.
** Wahine-Vuls Meet Tomorrow **
The UH-Wahine softball team (27-18), ranked 24th in the country,
will take on UH-Hilo (22-11) in a doubleheader tomorrow at the
Wahine Softball Stadium. According to UH coach Bob Coolen, a
loss to the Vulcans will severely cripple his team's postseason
aspirations. Coolen said he thinks the Wahine must win 12 of
their final 16 games to have a realistic hope of making the NCAA
Tournament. Meanwhile, the Vulcans are cruising along with
victories in 8 of their last 10 contests, including an upset
victory last week over the NCAA's eighth-ranked team, Cal State-
Fullerton.
** Sports Shorts **
Point guard Ken Collins yesterday signed a letter of intent to
play basketball at UH-Hilo. He formerly played for UHH coach Jim
Forkum at Hartnell in 1994-95. Collins, involved in a near-fatal
auto crash last year, is fully recovered and ready to play for
the Vulcans.

Several sports camps are scheduled for this summer at the
University of Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine Basketball Camp will be
held June 7-9 (call 956-8185 for info). The Rainbow Volleyball
Camp will have three sessions for interested athletes.
The first will be in June (call 956-6229 for details). The
Rainbow Men's Volleyball Camp will have two sessions for
youngsters and one "Adult Dream" session (call 956-4505).

** Three Seniors to Bid Aloha **
Three seniors--starting setter Eric Pichel and reserves Troy Hotz
and Mike Kantor--are preparing to say farewell to UH volleyball
fans as the Rainbows close their regular season campaign this
weekend against the Cal Golden Bears. Pichel leads the nation in
assists per game and is a candidate for All-America honors. As
backups on Hawaii's talent-laden roster, Hotz and Kantor have
seen limited playing time this season. In addition to finding
replacements for the three seniors, UH coach Mike Wilton will
probably need to fill the spots now occupied by sophomore stars
Yuval Katz and Naveh Milo who are expected to leave Hawaii at the
end of the season to enter the pro volleyball circuit.
** Adams Still Tripping **
Former UH football player Theo Adams is now a well-traveled
professional, with stints in the National Football and World
Leagues. After completing his career for the Rainbows in 1988,
Adams has literally seen the world. He is currently playing in
Germany for the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World League where he has
visited London, Tokyo, Montreal, Berlin, Barcelona, and a host of
other cities. An offensive lineman who wasn't drafted coming out
of college, Adams has also logged time in the NFL, with short
stops with the Rams, the Seahawks, the Eagles, and 49ers. "I've
still got some good years ahead," said Adams, soon-to-be-30.
"I'll keep playing until I can't do the job anymore."
** Ornellas Living On a Easy **
Tired of all the pressure in Hawaii, George Ornellas has found
his own kind of paradise in Corvallis, Oregon. The former Hawaii
high school football player of the year is living in the quiet
Northwest town enjoying time out of the spotlight that glared
brightly on him while he was a prep star for the St. Louis
Crusader and as a prized recruit for the University of Hawaii
football team. Said Ornellas: "I just live. I work. I do odd
jobs, but I get to make my own hours. If I did this in Hawaii,
I'd look like a loser. People would want to know why I'm not
playing (football). Here, I don't have to answer questions."
Although he plans to re-enroll in college again, Ornellas is
undecided about playing football. "If I have the opportunity to
play again, maybe I will, maybe I won't."
** Bows Hope to Bust Matadors **
This weekend, Hawaii will take on Cal State-Northridge in a 5-
game college baseball series beginning with a doubleheader
tomorrow at Rainbow Stadium. The Rainbows (25-16 overall and 8-8
WAC) trail the seventh-ranked Matadors (34-7 and 13-3) by five
games in the Western Athletic Conference West. According to UH
coach Les Murakami, the 'Bows need to take at least four of five
games from Northridge to have any hope of making a splash in the
conference. "No question, this will be a make-or-break weekend
for us," said Murakami. Mark Johnson (6-2, 3.75 ERA) and Paul Ah
Yat (7-4, 4.99) will take the hill in games one and two for
Hawaii.
** Toyama New HHSAA Honcho **
Dwight Toyama has been selected as the new executive director of
the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. Toyama, 43, who
succeeds Ed Kiyuna, will leave his athletic director post at
Kaimuki High School to accept the job as administrator of the
governing body that oversees athletic competition for 39 public
and 25 private schools statewide.
** Sueing Honored **
University of Hawaii forward Justice Sueing received the Art
Woolaway most valuable player award at the Rainbows' basketball
banquet last night at the Special Events Arena. Dubbed "The
Warrior" by UH coach Riley Wallace, Sueing also won awards as the
team's top defender and rebounder. Center Seth Sundberg, who
battled injuries all season long, received the most inspirational
player award. Other awards went to Tes Whitlock (community
service), Anthony Harris (team captain and best free-throw
shooter), and Alika Smith (assists).
** Sports Shorts **
ILH leader Kamehameha (21-1 overall) is ranked in a national high

The UH-Hilo basketball team landed a big one yesterday when 7-1
center Chad Glenn announced that he will sign a letter of intent

** Forward Commits to 'Bows **
Mike Robinson, a 6-8, 230-pound forward from Lassen (Junior)
College (Calif.), yesterday became the third player to verbally
commit to the University of Hawaii basketball team for the coming
season. He joins 6-10 Kelvin Anderson of McCook Junior College
and Kawika Akina of Dixie College, who earlier gave their verbal
I-do's. Robinson, described as "very mobile" and "an exceptional
athlete" by his JC coach, led Lassen to the Final Four of the 92-
team California Community College Conference and was named to the
all-star team this past season. He averaged 15.1 points and 11.3
boards per game. "The University of Hawaii is for me," said
Robinson. "I like the school, the facilities, the people. It
feels like home."
** Hawaii to Host Cal **
Hawaii will meet California in a two-match men's volleyball
series this weekend at the Special Events Arena. The Rainbows
(25-1) are the top-ranked team in the NCAA while the Golden Bears
(15-10) are No. 2 in the college club volleyball circuit. Since
Cal is a non-NCAA team, the matches will not count on Hawaii's
record. Ivan Gale, a two-time all-state player for Punahou, is
the top gun for California, which hopes to make a bid to enter
the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in the next few years.
** Mattson, Sagara Lead Vuls **
In what has turned out to be a rather dim season, two bright
lights have emerged for the UH-Hilo baseball team. The two are
centerfielder Keiki Mattson and pitcher Brendan Sagara. Mattson,
a junior from Chaffey High in Ontario, Calif., leads the Vulcans
in hitting with a .338 average. Last season, he was Hilo's top
pitcher, sporting a 4-3 record and a 1.93 ERA. Sagara, a former
Leilehua player, is the top moundsman for the Vulcans this
season. He has earned six of Hilo's nine wins, including a
complete game victory over cross-state rival UH-Manoa in the
Rainbow Easter Tournament a few weeks ago.
** HPU Ranked Third **
Hawaii Pacific remained in third in the latest NAIA Top 10
Women's Softball Poll released yesterday. The Sea Warriors (23-
9) will square off against UH-Hilo on Friday at the HPU Windward
Field.

Two-time ILH golf champion Jason Hattori of Hawaii Baptist
Academy is among the favorites for the Hawaii High School
Athletic Association Golf Tournament which will run tomorrow
through Friday at the Hapuna Golf Course on the Big Island.
Hattori, the state runner-up as a sophomore, finished in a tie
for third in 1995. Other golfers expected to make strong bids
for the state title are Hattori's teammates Shannon Tanoue and
Norman Asao, Kamehameha's Justin Kim, Punahou's Tony Okano and
Parker McLachlin, Waiakea's Ian Kawamoto, Hilo's Shaun Downie and
Maui's Ryan Koshi.

** Bows Edge Hornets **
A day after hitting for the cycle, Neal Honma ripped a ninth
inning double to drive in the winning run in Hawaii's 9-8 Western
Athletic Conference baseball victory over Sacramento State
yesterday afternoon at Rainbow Stadium. With one out and the
score tied at eight in the ninth, Honma slapped a nose-diving
shot to left that skipped past Hornet outfield Bill Hoover,
allowing Jason Ross to score from second base. The Rainbows
improved to 25-16 overall and 8-8 in the WAC. Northridge dropped
to 8-29 and 1-16. Hawaii will host Cal State-Northridge this
weekend.
** KHNL Sports Still Struggling **
Despite trumpet calls that it would revolutionize television
sports coverage as local fans knew it, KHNL (News-8) still is not
the top dog it predicted it would be. At least not yet. Prior
to the station's April 17 debut last April, officials for KHNL
announced that they would hire Hawaii's hottest talent and
introduce ground-breaking technology to provide the best sports
news in the Islands. Said Robert Kekaula, KHNL's hand-picked
sports anchor: "We're not even close where we want to be." The
latest Nielsen ratings place KHNL in third place in the local
network airtime battleground. "We're the brand new station in
the market," said general manager Doug Armstrong. "It'll take a
while."
** Smith, Wokasch Stride to Wins **
John Smith and Jeannie Wokasch captured the respective men's and
women's titles at yesterday's 19th Annual Norman K. Tamanaha 15-K
run. Traversing a course that began at Kapiolani Park, continued
over Diamond Head into Kahala, and returned to the starting
point, Smith, with a time of 52 minutes, 23 seconds, cruised to a
21-second win over runner-up Michael Georgi. Wokasch won her
third-ever Tamanaha women's title, finishing 10th overall in
57:59. Heather Matz Jorris (59:05) was the women's runnerup. In
age group competition, Masuru Morikawa crushed the 75-79 age
group record with a time of 1:22:45, six minutes and six seconds
better than the previous mark.

** Perfection for Bows **
The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team capped a perfect
season in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with a 15-3, 15-
11, 15-8 triumph over Stanford last night in front of a Special
Events Arena sellout crowd of 10,225. The top-ranked Rainbows,
who close their regular season with two non-conference matches
against California next weekend, completed MPSF play with an
unblemished 19-0 record. Overall, they are 25-1, with their only
loss a non-conference match against second-ranked UCLA. Last
night, Yuval Katz led the Hawaii kill parade with 21, while Naveh
Milo and Aaron Wilton contributed 12 and 11 respectively.
** Honma's Cycle Propels Baseball Bows **
Neil Honma hit for the cycle last night in Hawaii's 15-6 Western
Athletic Conference victory over Cal State-Sacramento at Rainbow
Stadium. A sophomore from Pearl City High, Honma went 5 for 5,
lacing out two singles, a double, a triple, and a homer. His
two-run round-tripper in the seventh sparked a nine-run Rainbow
rally in the inning that erased a 4-2 Hornet lead. Honma is
only the fifth Hawaii player to hit for the cycle. A crowd of
1,196 watched the Rainbows improve to 24-16 overall and 7-8 in
the WAC. The two teams conclude their three-game series with a
single game this afternoon.
** Castro Leads Prep Hoop Stars **
Moanalua's Issac Castro and Eddie Maruyama took the top honors as
the *Honolulu Advertiser* named its 1996 Hawaii High School All-

Jameson's six-hitter, shut out the Titans 1-0 in the nightcap.
Hawaii now stands at 29-17 overall and 7-11 in the Big West
Conference. CSF is 32-15 and 12-7.

Two former Hawaii prepsters have been nominated for prestigious
college football awards. Offensive lineman Chris Naeole (Kahuku
'92), a senior-to-be at the University of Colorado, is tabbed as
a top contender for the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award, both
awarded annually to college football's top lineman. Also in the
spotlight is the University of Washington's Ink Aleaga (Maryknoll
'91), a nominee for the Butkus Award which is given to the
country's top college linebacker.
----
Joining Aleaga at Washington are a posse of Hawaii athletes,
including starting linebacker Ikaika Malloe (Kamehameha '92),
potential starting center Olin Kreutz (St. Louis '95),
linebackers Stuart Williams (Kamehameha '93), Brian Bell (Punahou
'94), and Tyler Hoke (St. Louis '94), center Petrocelli Kesi (St.
Louis '93), and defensive backs Sean Takamori (Iolani '95) and
Greg Young (Iolani '91).
----
In gymnastics, Punahou grad ('95) Kiralee Hayashi recently
notched several career-bests as a member of the UCLA women's
gymnastics team. In a meet against BYU last week, Hayashi had a
combined score of 39.1 (of 40), her highest-ever score.
----
Ivan Gale (Punahou '93) is the starting middle hitter for the
Cal-Berkeley volleyball team. A two-time all-state player for
the Buffanblu, Gale has led the Bears to a No. 2 ranking in men's
club volleyball.

** Johnson, Ross Lead Bows **
Mark Johnson hurled a complete-game three-hitter and outfielder
Jason Ross went 4 for 4 to spark Hawaii past Sacramento State 7-3
last night at Rainbow Stadium. Earlier, the Hornets notched a
16-9 win in a game that was a completion of a March 3 meeting
suspended because of rain in the eighth inning. In last night's
nine-inning feature game, the Rainbows used Johnson's solid
pitching performance--he had a 1-hit shutout entering the ninth--
and the offensive prowess of Ross, who drove in two runs and
stole three bases, to improve to 23-16 overall and 6-8 in the
Western Athletic Conference.
** Sellout for Tonight's Bow-Cardinal Re-match **
Tonight's Hawaii-Stanford volleyball rematch will be played in
front of a Special Events Arena sellout crowd of 10,225. On
Thursday night, the Rainbows (24-1), appearing to peak as the
playoffs near, blew away the Cardinal (13-6) in three straight
games. So dominating were the Rainbows that Stanford hit for a
negative .043 for the match, the first time the Cardinal hadn't
achieved positive numbers in coach Ruben Nieves' six-year stint.
"Make no mistake," said Nieves, "Hawaii is very, very good."

** Bows Stomp Stanford **
In one of their most dominating performances of the season, the
top-ranked University of Hawaii men crushed No. 4 Stanford 15-2,
15-5, 15-5 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match that
lasted just 1 hour, 17 minutes. A Special Events Arena crowd of
8,576, which made the Bows' the first men's college volleyball
team to eclipse the 100,000 mark in season attendance, witnessed
the massacre. "We got our butts kicked," admitted Stanford coach
Ruben Nieves. "I don't mean to take anything away from the crowd
but that team is good with 8,000 people in the arena or eight
people in the arena. They are a very, very good team." The
magnificent Rainbows (24-1 overall) can clinch a perfect 19-0
campaign in the MPSF with a win over the Cardinal tomorrow night.
All-American Yuval Katz led Hawaii with 15 kills last night.
Jason Ring added 10 more.
** Baseball Bows Host Hornets **
Hawaii will host Sacramento State in a three-game Western
Athletic Conference baseball series that begins tonight at
Rainbow Stadium. Prior to tonight's series opener, the Bows and
Hornets will complete a game that was postponed because of rain
on March 3 in Sacramento. The Hornets (0-13, WAC) were leading
15-9 entering the bottom of the eighth inning. Little-used
reliever Ken Mackenzie will take the mound for Hawaii (22-15
overall and 5-7, WAC) in the continuation of the rained-out game.
Mark Johnson (5-2, 3.93 ERA) gets the call in the nine-inning
series opener and Paul Ah Yat (6-4, 5.00) will start tomorrow
night. Either Randon Ho, Daven Hermosura, or Robby Robinson will
pitch the series finale. "No question, we need to sweep to get in
the hunt," said UH coach Les Murakami.
** HPU Falls Again **
After jumping out to a 7-3 lead through the first three frames,
the Hawaii Pacific baseball team could not hold off Point Loma
Nazarene (Calif.), losing to the Crusaders 12-7 yesterday at
Keehi Lagoon Field. It was HPU's second straight loss to PLN.
With a 9-19-1 record and six games to play, the Sea Warriors
won't advance to the postseason. "The pressure's off," said HPU
coach Allan Sato. "I told them just go out and have fun already."
** Sports Shorts **
John Shimooka won his second-round heat yesterday to join fellow
Hawaii surfers Derek Ho, Sunny Garcia, and Conan Hayes in the
third round of the Rip Curl Pro at Bell's Beach, Australia. In

advanced in trial rounds.

Conference) won the first game, 4-3, and the second, 6-3. Hawaii
fell to 26-17 and 6-10. Another doubleheader between the two
teams is scheduled for tomorrow.
----
While the UH Wahine were getting swept, the Chaminade softball
team was making a 6-2, 9-5 twin killing of Binghamton (N.Y.)
yesterday at Cartwright Field. The Silverswords improved to 10-
19 with the wins.

losing the first game, 3-0, and the second, 11-2. Lee Anzai had
three of those hits for the Sea Warriors, who fell to 9-18-1 on
the season. The two teams will meet again this morning.
** Recognition for Wilton, Kokx **
UH volleyball player Aaron Wilton and UH Wahine golf coach Bobbi
Kokx were named the March Sportspersons of the Month by the
Honolulu Quarterback Club. A 6-1 junior outside hitter, Wilton

matches last month. First-year coach Kokx led the Wahine links
team to its first-ever college tournament victory at the Lady
Bronc Golf Classic in Harlingen, Texas.

** Cards to Challenge Bows **
Fourth-ranked Stanford hopes to rain on Hawaii's conference-
leading parade when the Cardinal take on the Bows in Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball matches tomorrow and
Saturday at the Special Events Arena. The Rainbows are 17-0 in
conference play and have already clinched the regular season
championship and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. They have won
10-straight since losing their lone match of the season against
No. 2 UCLA. Stanford, led by setter Stewart Chong, a former
Kamehameha star, is 13-5. The Cardinal hold a 20-4 series
advantage over Hawaii.
** Sid Yields Two Hits--Loses **
Former Kaiser High star Sid Fernandez, making the first Major
League opening-day start of his long career, allowed just two
hits and two runs but was the losing pitcher in the Philadelphia
Phillies' 5-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies yesterday in
Philadelphia. Fernandez hurled seven innings, striking out eight
and walking three. One of the hits he surrendered was a 2-run
first-inning homer to Larry Walker.
** Warriors Slam Owls **
An anticipated ILH baseball nail-biter turned into a blowout
instead as league-leading Kamehameha pounded out a 15-2 triumph
over Mid-Pacific yesterday at the Owls' Manoa field. Shortstop
Shane Lyons slammed two roundtrippers, catcher Dane Sardinha
clouted a three-run blast, and third baseman Billy Pieper drove
in five runs for the Warriors (12-1). The Owls, a private-school
power in recent seasons, fell to 8-5.
** Vulcans Upset Fullerton **
The UH-Hilo Wahine softball team (22-11) upset No. 5 Cal State-
Fullerton 2-0 in the second game of doubleheader yesterday at
Carvalho Park in Hilo. Jana Kovar hurled a two-hit gem to
frustrate the powerful Titans, who won the twinbill opener, 3-0.
Fullerton (29-14) now travels to Honolulu to take on No. 19
Hawaii (26-15) tomorrow and Saturday in Big West Conference games
of consequence for the Wahine. Get swept, says UH coach Bob
Coolen, and Hawaii's chances for advancing to the NCAA Tournament
will dwindle to next to nothing.
** Sports Shorts **
Hawaii Pacific swept a women's exhibition softball doubleheader
from Golden West Community College yesterday at the Sea Warriors'
windward field. HPU is hitting .337 as team through 30 games
this season. Five Sea Warrior starters, led by Michele Ringor
(.469) and Lynette Williams (.419), have averages above .300.
HPU is 21-9 and ranked No. 3 in the latest NAIA Poll.
----
BYU-Hawaii junior Anneli Ornstedt is the top-ranked women's
tennis player in the NAIA, according to a recent poll. She sits
atop both the singles and doubles rankings (with Teresa
Stromberg). In the team rankings, the BYUH women are ranked
third and the BYUH men seventh.
----
The UH men's golf team finished fourth in the 20-team Anteater
Invitational which wrapped up yesterday at Coto de Caza, Calif.
Kahuku High grad Van Wright was the low scorer for Hawaii,
finishing sixth in the individual standings.

** Pitino-led 'Cats Take Title **
Former University of Hawaii assistant coach Rick Pitino led
Kentucky to a 76-67 triumph over Syracuse last night in the NCAA
national championship game at East Rutherford, N.J. Pitino, only
23 then, was an assistant to Bruce O'Neil at Hawaii from 1974-'76

** Harding's Video a Hit **
In search of a pro football team to hook up with, former UH
football player Matt Harding turned to technology to aid his
cause. The 5-9, 163-pound fleet-footed receiver spent half a
month editing videotapes of Hawaii football games to produce a
40-minute personal highlight film that he sent to National
Football League and Canadian Football League teams. His
advertising worked not only for himself, but also for two other
former-Bows--quarterback Rodney Glover and defensive back Robbie
Blakeney, who were offered two-year contracts by the Montreal
Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. "It was a lot of
work," said Harding, "but I'm happy the way the tape turned out."

** Bows Take Tourney Title **
Hawaii defeated Lewis-Clark State 7-5 last night at Rainbow
Stadium to win the championship of the Rainbow Easter Baseball
Tournament for the 10th time in its 21 years of existence. Two
freshmen and a veteran emerging from a hitting slump paced the
Bows. First-year players Tracy Nakano and Troy Yoshimasu made
clutch contributions despite their relative lack of college
experience. Nakano, an outfielder from Moanalua High, hit a two-
out single in the eighth to push across Keoni Hansen to break a
6-all tie. Yoshimasu, a Castle High product, shut out the
Warriors for the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the win. While the
youngsters provided the spark, third baseman Robert Medeiros,
struggling at the plate entering the tourney, fueled the Hawaii
effort with a 4 for 5 performance and flawless play at the hot
corner. The Hilo High grad batted .519 for the tournament (14
for 27) to earn Outstanding Player honors. The Bows finished the
tournament with a 5-2 record and are 22-15 overall.

Tammy Jacques and Lennie Kristensen held off their rivals to win
the overall women's and men's titles of the Hawaiian Mountain
Tour bike race yesterday at Kualoa Ranch. Jacques finished
second to Shari Kain in yesterday's criterium stage but Jacques'
total elapsed time for all five stages gave her a 42-second
margin of victory over Kain in the overall. In the men's
competition, Kristensen finished third in the criterium to propel
himself to a 25-second win
