Anthony Carter, a junior-to-be who averaged 27.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for Saddleback College (Calif). last season, said he was impressed with UH on his recent visit to the islands and would sign with the Rainbows. A unanimous choice for the California JC All-Star team, Carter was named the national junior college player of the year by one publication. "He's an impact player," said Mark Mayemura, editor of USA Recruiting magazine. "He can put up numbers like (former UH player) Trevor Ruffin. In February, Hawaii traveled to California and crushed the No. 3 Gauchos 15-7, 15-13, 15-5. "We ripped them," said UH coach Mike Wilton. Now 17-7, UCSB hopes to give the top-ranked Rainbows (26-1) a better match. "It's a great opportunity for us," said Gaucho coach Ken Preston. "We don't have a lot to lose." At stake is a spot in Saturday's MPSF championship match against the winner of the other semifinal between UCLA and Cal State-Northridge. Doucette, the Pacific West Conference coach of the year for 1995, will reportedly accept a head basketball coaching job at Central Missouri State. He endured a controversy-filled 1996 campaign with the Silverswords, who ended up 4-22. In three seasons at Chaminade, Doucette's teams posted a 22-51 record. A search for his replacement will begin immediately. While Doucette was on his way out, three players are headed to the Islands after signing letters of intent to play for the Silverswords. The three are Roman Rivera, a 6-3 guard from Canada College; 6-9 center Matt Umbarger from Cuesta (Calif.) College; and 6-4 guard William Antonio from Allan Hancock College (Calif.) ** Sports Shorts ** Punahou was incorrectly identified as the 1996 ILH girls' basketball champions in yesterday's Hawaii Sports News. Iolani is this year's ILH title winner, and the Raiders have earned a spot in the upcoming state tournament. ---- Hawaii native Mike Lambert put down 17 kills in Team USA Volleyball's four-game victory over Russia last night in Moscow. Playing at the opposite hitter position, Lambert also added two aces. ---- Hawaii's Sam Kerner moved into the lead of the Finn class at the U.S Olympic Yachting Trials being held at Savannah, Georgia. Kerner, the top-ranked American in the Finn class, has a one- point lead over 1992 Olympic silver medalist Brian Ledbetter. Competitors are vying for a spot in the Atlanta summer Olympics. ---- The UH Wahine golf team finished third at the Big West Conference championship which concluded yesterday at Long Beach, Calif. Hawaii's Dawn Kaneshiro and Julie Miyagi finished 10th and 11th in the individual competition and earned second team all- conference honors. ---- UH-Hilo swept a softball twinbill, 5-0 and 10-2, from San Francisco State yesterday in San Francisco. Kelly Guerin fired a four-hitter in the opener and Kristy Odamura, Gina Pabre, Julie Bock, and Gail Ostrander had two hits apiece in the nightcap. ---- Hawaii Pacific second baseman Jarnett Lono was named Far West Independent Region player of the week for her recent performance. The freshman from Roosevelt ripped nine hits in eleven at bats over a four-game span against Chaminade last week. She was also flawless in the field, handling ten chances without a miscue. ---- Pitcher Brendan Sagara was named the MVP of the UH-Hilo baseball team at a recent awards banquet. A product of Leilehua High School, Sagara posted a 7-2 record for the Vulcans in 1996, including a win over cross-state rival UH-Manoa. ---- Kamehameha clinched the ILH baseball championship after defeating Maryknoll 14-2 yesterday. As a result, the Warriors (18-3) have earned an automatic berth into the state tournament. "I was glad to hear it," said the 6-foot-8, 460-pound giant-of-a-man who in 1993 became the first non-Japanese to earn the rank of yokozuna. "I'd like to make a fresh start as a Japanese and devote myself to sumo." Akebono has sat out the last three tournaments because of a nagging knee injury and is under pressure to do well in the upcoming May tourney or retire. He now joins three other former Hawaii residents--Jesse Kuhaulua, Salevaa Atisanoe, and Fiamalu Penitani--who sought and gained Japanese naturalization. ** Bows Want Privacy ** In order to avoid the media posse pursuing his team, UH men's volleyball coach Mike Wilton has ordered closed practices for the remainder of the week as his Rainbows prepare for their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation semifinal playoff match against UC- Santa Barbara on Friday night at a soldout Special Events Arena. Concerned because his team "played horribly Saturday night" in its victory against a determined Pepperdine squad, Wilton has barred the media from practices for the first time in his tenure as Rainbow coach. "I feel like we've pulled away from what we want to try to do," said Wilton. "I think we need to sequester right now." UCLA will take on Cal State-Northridge in another semi at the SEA on Friday with the semifinal winners meeting on Saturday night for the MPSF title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Final Four. ** All-State Surfing Team Named ** Kapaa High's Andy Irons and Waialua's Megan Abubo were named the respective boys' and girls' surfers of the year as the *Honolulu Advertiser* named its All-State Surfing Team today. In the ILH, Punahou, the league champion, and Kamehameha, the runner-up, have already earned state tourney berths. Punahou, University High, Maryknoll, Sacred Hearts, and Mid-Pacific are competing in a single-elimination playoff for the league's third berth. In the OIA, defending champion McKinley will take on Pearl City and Radford will challenge Castle in that league's postseason tournament semifinals. Both games are set for Friday at Pearl City High gym with the winners meeting Saturday for the OIA title. The four semifinalists have already earned state tournament spots. In the BIIF, Hilo and Honokaa will be Oahu-bound for the state tournament. The Vikings and Daggers will meet this week to determine the league champion. The Pinelads, who qualified for the national meet next month in San Diego, grabbed this year's state championship in a competition on April 12 at the Kaneohe Marine Corp Base. Lanai's Randy Ribucan and Bonnie Ayonayon won the boys' and girls' individual titles. ** Sports Shorts ** Former Campbell High School and BYU star Mike Ulufale was drafted in the third round of the 1996 National Football League draft on Sunday. The 95th player chosen overall, Ulufale hopes to land a spot on the roster of the world champion Cowboys as a defensive lineman. ---- Deserre Texeira and Todd Gallagher of Leilehua were named the top shooters as the OIA named its Riflery All-Stars today. Leilehua's Anthony Williams was named top coach. ---- The OIA also announced its golf all-star team. McKinley's Masanori Iwahori was selected as player of the year while Aiea's George Anzai was named coach of the year. ---- OIA officials announced plans to consider expanding the number of teams involved in the leagues postseason football playoffs from eight to twelve. Also being mulled about is a proposal to play junior varsity and varsity doubleheaders during the regular season. Currently, OIA varsity and JV teams have played on different days. ---- After three days of competition, Hawaii's Sam Kerner is in fourth place at the U.S. Olympic Yachting Trials at Savannah, Georgia. Racing will continue through Sunday. ---- The UH Wahine softball team split a doubleheader with UC-Santa Barbara yesterday in California. Behind Stephanie Wiese's pitching (seven-hitter) and batting (2-4, homer), Hawaii (30-21 overall and 9-13 in the Big West) won the first game 4-2. The Rainbows entered the final frame leading 5-3, but the Aztecs rallied for three runs to win it. "Our defense cost us the game," said UH coach Les Murakami, who saw his team fall to 29-20 overall and 12-12 in the WAC. "The winning run was unearned. We had an error and didn't execute on a double play." San Diego State improved to 30-18 and 15-9. Hawaii returns home for a three-game series this weekend against Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. ** Nakama Takes Mid-Pac Title ** Casey Nakama cruised to a four-stroke victory at the 33rd Mid- Pacific Open golf tournament yesterday at the Mid-Pacific Country Club on Oahu's windward side. Nakama's one-over 73 yesterday gave him a 72-hole total of 7-under 281, four shots better than runner-up Dan Nishimoto. As tournament champion, Nakama earned $5,000. ** Sports Shorts ** Sam Kerner of the Hawaii Yacht Club won two Finn class races yesterday to move into fifth place at the U.S. Olympics Yachting Trials being held at Savannah, Georgia. The competition for Olympic team berths continues through next Sunday. ---- The UH-Hilo baseball team swept a doubleheader yesterday, topping Hawaii Pacific 4-3 and 10-6 at the UHH Baseball Complex. With a sellout crowd of 10,225 chanting "MVP, MVP, MVP," Katz--shunned by MPSF coaches for top player honors--delivered a magnificent performance, handling 40 percent of Hawaii's sets for a superb .492 kill percentage. "He wanted every single ball," said setter Eric Pichel. "I've never seen him want it more." The top- ranked Rainbows (26-1) now advance to a tournament semifinal clash against No. 4 UC-Santa Barbara this Friday at the SEA. UCLA hosts Cal State-Northridge in the other. ** Ah Yat Hurls Bows Past Aztecs ** Senior southpaw Paul Ah Yat went the nine-inning distance to spark Hawaii past San Diego State, 8-4, in a Western Athletic Conference game yesterday at Smith Field in San Diego. Ah Yat scattered seven hits, striking out four and walking two, to improve to 10-4 on the season. "His fastball had a lot of pop," said UH skipper Les Murakami. "Paul pitched very well." Hawaii, which evened the three-game weekend series at a game apiece, improved to 29-19 overall and 12-11 in the conference. The Aztecs fell to 29-18 and 14-9. The series finale is today. ** Puns Dominate ILH Track ** Punahou won both the boys' and girls' titles at the ILH Track and Field Championships yesterday at the Buffanblu's Alexander Field. Jon Van Horn won gold medals (100, 200, 400 and 1600 relays) to lead the Puns to the boys team title. For the Buffanblu girls, freshman Eri Macdonald was also a quadruple gold medalist, winning the 200, the 800, and anchoring the 800 and 1600 relays. Kamehameha finished a distant second in both the boys' and girls' competition. ** High School Hoop Playoffs ** McKinley, Radford, Castle, and Pearl City advance to the semifinals of the OIA Girls Basketball Tournament with quarterfinal triumphs yesterday at Leilehua Gym. Top-seeded McKinley crushed Aiea 60-38, Radford bopped Aiea 50-35, Castle defeated Kalaheo 73-60 and Pearl City nipped Campbell 48-45. The semifinal round will take place this Friday at Moanalua and will pit Radford against Castle and McKinley against Pearl City. ---- Over in the ILH, Kamehameha earned the league's second state playoff berth by defeating Punahou 56-47 yesterday in a special playoff game. Iolani, the ILH champion, has already earned a state tourney spot. A third state tournament berth is now the goal of the Buffanblu, who will now enter a single-elimination tournament with the rest of the ILH Division I teams and Mid- Pacific, which defeated La Pietra 35-25 yesterday to take the ILH Division II title. ** Prep Baseball ** Kamehameha moved to within a game of capturing the ILH baseball title by defeating Mid-Pacific 10-2 yesterday at Aloha Stadium. For the Warriors (17-3), who can win the ILH crown with a win over Maryknoll on Tuesday, Lanakila Niles hurled a two-hit gem, and Kealii Lum, Shane Lyons, and Shane Chan paired hits. In other ILH games, Iolani (16-4) topped UHS/HBA, 12-0; Punahou edged St. Louis, 6-5; and Damien nipped Maryknoll, 10-9. ---- Hilo (11-0) and Waiakea (10-1) will represent the BIIF in the state baseball tournament. Yesterday, Waiakea's Vince Riveira fired a one-hit shutout to earn a tourney bid for the Warriors. Hilo, the regular season champion, will take on Waiakea in the BIIF tournament championship game on Wednesday at Wong Stadium. ---- Castle, Pearl City, Kaiser, and Aiea advanced to the semifinals of the OIA baseball playoffs with wins yesterday. All four also have earned state tournament berths. The semifinals, scheduled for Wednesday at Aloha Stadium, will match Castle against Pearl City and Aiea against Kaiser. In the hunt for the league's fifth state tournament spot are yesterday's quarterfinal losers-- Moanalua, Kailua, Waianae, and Mililani. ** Homegrown Report ** JEAN OKADA (Lahainaluna '92), a senior at UC-Santa Barbara, is ranked 25th in NCAA Division I women's tennis singles. It is believed to be the highest ranking achieved by a player from Hawaii since the rankings started 18 years ago. Her record is 19-4. In doubles, she is 13-0 and ranked 59th. ---- CLAYTON KANESHIRO (Hilo '93) was named co-Top Defender of the Grinnell (Iowa) basketball team, which led NCAA Division III in scoring. Kaneshiro was named Academic All-Midwest Conference (3.9 GPA) and has been named Grinnell's captain for next season. ---- SUMMERSET LOVETT (University '94), a sophomore golfer at Ohio State, placed eighth in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at U. of Georgia. Her rounds included a career-best-tying one-over par 74. ---- Senior-to-be JASON SCANLAN (St. Louis '93) is a starting football linebacker at St. Mary's (Calif). Earlier this season, the Rainbows toasted the Waves, who only mustered 20 points while getting swept in three games. However, Pepperdine has improved since that early- February meeting, thanks to some changes in its lineup, most notably the insertion of Punahou grad J.J. Riley at setter and 6- 6 hitter George Roumain. "If we pass and can sideout with them, maybe we can wear them down," said Riley. "We'll see if maybe they crack." ** Hawaii Loses in Extra Innings ** Hawaii lost a 4-3 14-inning heartbreaker to San Diego State in a Western Athletic Conference baseball game last night at Smith Field in San Diego. In the bottom of the 14th, Travis Lee drilled a Daven Hermosura offering to right field to drive in Kalin Founds from second base for the game-winning run. Earlier, Hawaii (28-19 overall and 11-11, WAC) had rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Game two of the three game series will be played today. ** Tennis Titles to Puns, Warriors ** Punahou captured the boys' crown and Kamehameha the girls' at the 39th Hawaii High School Athletic Association state tennis championships yesterday at the Wailea Tennis Club on Maui. The titles were the sixth straight for the Buffanblu and the third consecutive for the Warriors. In singles competition, Chris Ma of Punahou and Lisa Kahikina of Kamehameha lived up to their top- seeded rankings as each won titles. Ma defeated topped Lahainaluna's Malino Oda, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, in the boys' final, and Kahikina cruised past Kahuku's Tara Porter, 6-4, 6-1, in the girls'. In doubles, Baldwin's Brayden Corniel and Craig Nunokawa were the top boys duo, while Kamehameha's Kaleinani Kowalski and Keawe Ayau captured their third straight girls' title. ** Moanalua, Radford Take Track Titles ** The Moanalua girls and the Radford boys raced to the team titles at the OIA Track and Field Championships last night at the Kaiser High track. Na Menehune, bolstered by four-event winner Desiree Holstein, outpointed runner-up Kahuku 61-44 to grab the girls championship. Holstein, a 5-7, 127-pound senior, won the triple, high, and long jumps and the 100 meter dash. In the boys' competition, Radford's Bruce Taylor also turned in a sterling performance, capturing the triple and high jump events and anchoring two winning relay teams. The Rams easily outdistanced Mililani, 62-39 to take the team title. ** Local Doctor a Bengal Owner ** Thanks to a successful medical career and shrewd investing, retired Honolulu doctor Edison Miyawaki Sr. now owns a quarter of the Cincinnati Bengals NFL football franchise, at a price tag of over $40 million. Miyawaki, who said he won't meddle in the player selection process in today's NFL draft, did admit that he'd use his influence to help island athletes get a shot at the NFL. "I have an opportunity to give Hawaii kids a chance to play in the NFL," he said. "And I'm going to use it." ** Sports Shorts ** Casey Nakama surged to a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Mid-Pacific Open yesterday at the Mid-Pacific Country Club. Nakama shot his second consecutive 3-under 69 for a two- round total of 6-under 138. In a somewhat surprising development, Hawaii's Yuval Katz was edged for conference player of the year honors by Punahou grad Stein Metzger, the setter for No. 3 UCLA. Katz, an All-American as a freshman in 1995 and this season's national leader in kills and aces, was the only Hawaii player named to the 1996 MPSF first-team. Setter Eric Pichel and outside hitter Aaron Wilton were named to the second team and Naveh Milo earned third team honors. UOP's Joe Wortmann was selected as coach of the year. The Rainbows (25-1) will meet Pepperdine (15-10) in a conference first-round playoff match tomorrow night at a sold-out Special Events Arena. ** Tomey and 'Cats to Hawaii in '98 ** Former UH football coach Dick Tomey will bring his Arizona Wildcats to play the University of Hawaii at Aloha Stadium in 1998. Tomey, who coached the Rainbows from 1977 to 1986, is in his tenth season as the head of the Arizona program. The game is set of Sept 5., the season-opener for both teams. ** Bows Hope to End Well ** While all hasn't been consistently well for the UH baseball team, head coach Les Murakami and his Rainbows are striving to end the 1996 season with a string of victories. Currently, KFVE- Channel 5 has the contract with UH but that will expire in June 1997. While KFVE officials have offered UH approximately $2.5 million for a five-year extension, Oceanic has reportedly thrown a much more lucrative deal on the table. However, despite its tempting financial inducement, Oceanic may see its bid hampered because of a lack of a full-time production staff and equipment for remote broadcasts. In addition, if Oceanic receives the UH contract, local residents who do not subscribe to Oceanic would be unable to see Rainbow sports broadcasts. UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida said he wants to have a broadcast contract deal completed by the end of the summer. ** Prep Track News ** The ILH and OIA track champions will be determined this weekend as both leagues will hold title meets on Saturday. In the ILH, Punahou and Kamehameha will battle for both the girls' and boys' titles. The top female athletes include Punahou freshmen Eri Macdonald (middle distance) and Sarah Yap (jumps), and Kamehameha's Angela Rosa (distance) and Carmel Hurley (sprints). Instead, he is making a strong bid to earn the starting quarterback position to run the intricate "West Coast" offense, an attack predicated on precise, short- and medium-range passing. "It's tough, but I'm not going to quit just because a new system came in," said Freitas, a former Waianae High star and a spot-starter for the Bows in the past couple seasons. "You have to work through it. I wasn't raised to be a quitter." Also in the quarterback hunt are junior Johnny Macon and red-shirt freshman Hunter Young. "They're adjusting better than I expected," said offensive coordinator Guy Benjamin of the trio. "It's different for them, but they're doing a decent job." ** Bows-Bruins Rain Victims ** The college baseball game between Hawaii and UCLA at Jackie Ronbinson Field in Los Angeles was cancelled yesterday because of rain. The Rainbows were leading 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning when umpires halted play because of a slippery turf. Hawaii now will travel south to San Diego to take on San Diego State in a three-game series this weekend. Mark Johnson (6-3) is the scheduled starter for Friday's opener. ** Ex-Bow Charged ** Former University of Hawaii football player Junior Tagoai was arrested early this morning for his involvement in a fight at the Blue Zebra nightclub at Restaurant Row. Tagoai, who earned outstanding defensive player honors at the 1992 Holiday Bowl, allegedly struck a security officer in the face in the altercation. Executing an array of non- traditional drills involving softballs, hoops, and huge rubber balls, the 100-plus players on-hand were fired up to be a part of the new beginning for Rainbow football. Said defensive back Doe Henderson: "There was a lot of enthusiasm out there. That's what the coaches brought with them. They're enthused. We're enthused." One of the highlights of the day was a four-on-four drill where the offensive players had three downs to advance the football ten yards. Celebrations were aplenty when a runner scored or made a hefty gain or when a defender leveled an advancing ball toter. "I was not displeased," said vonAppen when asked to sum up the day. ** Milo to Return ** UH volleyball player Naveh Milo squelched rumors that he would be leaving the Rainbows at the end of the season when he announced yesterday that he would return to Hawaii for the 1996-97 campaign. A sophomore outside hitter from Israel, Milo has been contemplating a bid to hook up with a professional team after the completion of the current season. All-American Yuval Katz, Hawaii's go-to attacker, has all but confirmed that he will play for pay next season. Meanwhile, Milo, Katz and the rest of the top-ranked Rainbow team (25-1) are preparing for Saturday night's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation first-round playoff match against No. 12 Pepperdine (15-10) at a sold-out Special Events Arena. ** HPU Signs Three ** After seeing 7-1 center Juergen Malbeck handcuffed by fouls in the NAIA Championship Tournament, Hawaii Pacific basketball coach Tony Sellitto lived up to his vow to recruit athletes in the 6-4 to 6-7 range when he announced yesterday the signing of three players who fit that mold. The three are 6-4, 180-pound guard Marlon Short from Skyline (Calif.) JC, a "big-time scorer" according to Sellitto; 6-7, 225-pound forward Corey Reincke from Kellogg (Mich.) Community College; and 6-5 forward Stacy Nolan out of Cerritos (Calif.) College. ** POW Honors for Ah Yat ** Paul Ah Yat was named the Western Athletic Conference West player of the week for his outstanding performance for the Rainbow baseball team over nationally-ranked Cal State-Northridge over the weekend. A senior southpaw, Ah Yat had a hand in the Bows' three victories over the Matadors, as he was credited with two wins and a save. VonAppen, who says his goal is to have a winning season in 1996, promised an all-business approach during spring ball. "We'll be regimented and theatrical," he said. Last night's crowd upped Hawaii's home attendance total to 134,361 for the season, a men's college volleyball record, and with 11,000 of the UH Wahine's mark. ** Bows, Matadors Split Again ** Just like the night before, the UH baseball team split a doubleheader with WAC West leader Cal State-Northridge last night at Rainbow Stadium. Behind the pitching of Troy Yoshimasu, who tossed three innings of scoreless relief, the Rainbows notched a 4-0 win in the opener, a continuation of a game suspended by rain in the fifth inning on March 13. Kelly Konishi's three-run homer in the fifth was the big blow. In the second game, the Matadors ripped five Hawaii pitchers for 18 hits in a 17-5 blowout. The 'Bows are now 27-18 overall and 10-10 in the WAC while Northridge is 37-9 and 15-5. Nakanelua, who defeated two-time champion Matt Harding to grab the title last year, yesterday edged former Lutheran High sprinter Jummane Washington in a photo finish. Both were clocked in 10.9. UH coach Mike Wilton used the opportunity to clear his bench and to put his three seniors--Eric Pichel, Troy Hotz, and Mike Kantor--in the spotlight. Despite being victimized, the California players were thrilled to have the opportunity to take part in the Rainbow hysteria. Said Cal setter Chris Hopkins: "This was one of the best experiences of my life. I've never felt so much energy playing volleyball. Even football and basketball aren't treated like this back home." Following the match, a mini-riot ensued outside the area when autograph-seeking fans mobbed Rainbow players. No one was hurt, but Honolulu Police officers were summoned to restore order and to escort players from the area. The two teams will meet again tonight in another game that will not count against either team's record. ** Split for Baseball Bows ** Thanks to Paul Ah Yat's three-hit shutout, the UH baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split with Cal State-Northridge last night with a Rainbow Stadium crowd of 1,839 in attendance. In the opening game, the WAC West-leading Matadors slammed Rainbow ace Mark Johnson for six runs in the sixth inning to erase a 3-0 deficit and notch a 6-3 triumph over the Rainbows. In the nightcap, Ah Yat was masterful, striking out four and allowing just one base on balls to lead the home team to a 6-0 win. After the split, Hawaii is 26-17 overall and 9-9 in the Western Athletic Conference, and CSN is 14-4 and 36-8. A doubleheader is scheduled for today. ** State Titles for McLachlin, Au ** Punahou's Parker McLachlin and Kamehameha's Elisha Au captured state high school golf titles yesterday on the Big Island. McLachlin, only a junior, fired a dazzling 6-under 66 to breeze to a seven stroke victory in the boys' individual competition and to lead the Buffanblu to the team title. Au, the girls' runner- up in 1995, cruised to a 5-stroke victory this year with rounds of 78 and 77. See Scoreboard section for team and individual scores. ** Wahine to Face Early Season Tests ** The UH Wahine will see how they measure up from the get-go when they take part in the NACWAA Volleyball Classic on Aug. 23 and 24. "The pain was real bad," said Garcia, but he fought through the torment to defeat Florida's Todd Holland in the quarterfinals, California's Shane Beschen in the semifinals, and Aussie Todd Prestage in the finals. According the Vulcan athletic director Bill Trumbo, a UHH-sponsored kids summer program has been cancelled and the budget to fund recruiting costs for Vulcan coaches has been slashed drastically. "We're really in a hole," said Trumbo. "We keep struggling to keep the program alive." ---- The Waikiki Beach Boys will host a Ironman/woman canoe race that will begin and end at Magic Island. Said vonAppen: "All the running, lifting, and drills we've been going through so far have been insightful, but incomplete. Completion of the mosaic is they have to go out and play football." Determining the starting quarterback will be among vonAppen's goals in the next several weeks. Returnees Glenn Freitas and Johnny Macon are expected to battle redshirt freshman Hunter Young for the top signal-caller position. All three, recruited to run Bob Wagner's spread option attack, must now learn the intricacies of vonAppen's "West Coast Offense." Shoring up the defense, ranked near the bottom of several NCAA statistical categories last season, is also a priority. "I think everybody is excited to get out there and get to work," said vonAppen. ** Alexio versus Tyson? ** With no viable contenders in sight, world heavyweight kickboxing champion Dennis Alexio has issued a challenge to heavyweight boxing kingpin Mike Tyson in what would be "the biggest grossing sporting event in the history of mankind." Speaking at a press conference at the Planet Hollywood restaurant in Waikiki yesterday, Alexio said he'd be willing to forgo the use of his lethal legs if Tyson were skeptical. Meanwhile, Alexio (61-1) has another bout to tend to first. On May 11 at Blaisdell Arena, he is scheduled to meet European kickboxing champ Stephan Reveillon, a 6-foot-2, 217 pounder with a 36-2 record. "He's been training at a Thai camp," said Alexio, "so I expect him to be a very formidable opponent." Alexio, 37, has been idle since December 1 when he knocked out Dennis "Hurricane" Lane only 36- seconds into the first round. ** Serve Serves 'Bows Well ** While Yuval Katz's powerful attacks at the net have UH volleyball foes scrambling for cover, the 6-5 outsider hitter's jump serves make them quiver with fear. For that matter, the jump serve has been an effective weapon used by all UH players. Three 'Bows-- Katz, Naveh Milo, and Eric Pichel--are in the top 10 nationally in aces per game. Teammates Sivan Leoni, Jason Ring, Aaron Wilton, and Kahinu Lee are not far behind in aces registered. As a team, the Bows have tallied over 200 aces, more than double the amount registered by opponents. And even when not leading to immediate points, Hawaii's 60 mph serves may prompt poorly placed passes by opponents that give the Rainbows a defensive advantage. Said Milo: "When you have a good jump serve, you make the passer on the other side lose confidence. Sometimes before I serve I see they are scared. Even if I hit the ball not so hard they have no confidence. It's enough." The Rainbows (25-1) will unleash their powerful service attack on California (15-10) tonight and tomorrow at the Special Events Arena. ** Honma Has Hot Stick ** Although he's only 5-11, 165 pounds, Neal Honma has been the big man in the Rainbow baseball team's lineup in recent games. Last weekend against Sacramento State, the switch-hitting Honma ripped 11 hits in 17 plate appearances to raise his season average to .351, second best to Chris Garnett's team-leading .355. Against the Hornets, he became only the fifth UH player to hit for the cycle in Hawaii's 15-6 victory last Sunday afternoon. Honma hopes to continue his hot hitting this weekend when Hawaii (25-16 overall and 8-8, conference) hosts WAC West leader Cal State- Northridge (34-7 and 13-3) in a five-game set. A doubleheader tonight will kick off the series. ** Wahine-Vuls Meet Tomorrow ** The UH-Wahine softball team (27-18), ranked 24th in the country, will take on UH-Hilo (22-11) in a doubleheader tomorrow at the Wahine Softball Stadium. According to UH coach Bob Coolen, a loss to the Vulcans will severely cripple his team's postseason aspirations. Coolen said he thinks the Wahine must win 12 of their final 16 games to have a realistic hope of making the NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, the Vulcans are cruising along with victories in 8 of their last 10 contests, including an upset victory last week over the NCAA's eighth-ranked team, Cal State- Fullerton. ** Sports Shorts ** Point guard Ken Collins yesterday signed a letter of intent to play basketball at UH-Hilo. Pichel leads the nation in assists per game and is a candidate for All-America honors. As backups on Hawaii's talent-laden roster, Hotz and Kantor have seen limited playing time this season. In addition to finding replacements for the three seniors, UH coach Mike Wilton will probably need to fill the spots now occupied by sophomore stars Yuval Katz and Naveh Milo who are expected to leave Hawaii at the end of the season to enter the pro volleyball circuit. ** Adams Still Tripping ** Former UH football player Theo Adams is now a well-traveled professional, with stints in the National Football and World Leagues. After completing his career for the Rainbows in 1988, Adams has literally seen the world. He is currently playing in Germany for the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World League where he has visited London, Tokyo, Montreal, Berlin, Barcelona, and a host of other cities. An offensive lineman who wasn't drafted coming out of college, Adams has also logged time in the NFL, with short stops with the Rams, the Seahawks, the Eagles, and 49ers. "I've still got some good years ahead," said Adams, soon-to-be-30. "I'll keep playing until I can't do the job anymore." ** Ornellas Living On a Easy ** Tired of all the pressure in Hawaii, George Ornellas has found his own kind of paradise in Corvallis, Oregon. The former Hawaii high school football player of the year is living in the quiet Northwest town enjoying time out of the spotlight that glared brightly on him while he was a prep star for the St. Louis Crusader and as a prized recruit for the University of Hawaii football team. Said Ornellas: "I just live. I work. I do odd jobs, but I get to make my own hours. If I did this in Hawaii, I'd look like a loser. People would want to know why I'm not playing (football). Here, I don't have to answer questions." Although he plans to re-enroll in college again, Ornellas is undecided about playing football. "If I have the opportunity to play again, maybe I will, maybe I won't." ** Bows Hope to Bust Matadors ** This weekend, Hawaii will take on Cal State-Northridge in a 5- game college baseball series beginning with a doubleheader tomorrow at Rainbow Stadium. The Rainbows (25-16 overall and 8-8 WAC) trail the seventh-ranked Matadors (34-7 and 13-3) by five games in the Western Athletic Conference West. According to UH coach Les Murakami, the 'Bows need to take at least four of five games from Northridge to have any hope of making a splash in the conference. "No question, this will be a make-or-break weekend for us," said Murakami. Mark Johnson (6-2, 3.75 ERA) and Paul Ah Yat (7-4, 4.99) will take the hill in games one and two for Hawaii. ** Toyama New HHSAA Honcho ** Dwight Toyama has been selected as the new executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association. Toyama, 43, who succeeds Ed Kiyuna, will leave his athletic director post at Kaimuki High School to accept the job as administrator of the governing body that oversees athletic competition for 39 public and 25 private schools statewide. ** Sueing Honored ** University of Hawaii forward Justice Sueing received the Art Woolaway most valuable player award at the Rainbows' basketball banquet last night at the Special Events Arena. Robinson, described as "very mobile" and "an exceptional athlete" by his JC coach, led Lassen to the Final Four of the 92- team California Community College Conference and was named to the all-star team this past season. It feels like home." ** Hawaii to Host Cal ** Hawaii will meet California in a two-match men's volleyball series this weekend at the Special Events Arena. Ivan Gale, a two-time all-state player for Punahou, is the top gun for California, which hopes to make a bid to enter the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in the next few years. ** Mattson, Sagara Lead Vuls ** In what has turned out to be a rather dim season, two bright lights have emerged for the UH-Hilo baseball team. The two are centerfielder Keiki Mattson and pitcher Brendan Sagara. Mattson, a junior from Chaffey High in Ontario, Calif., leads the Vulcans in hitting with a .338 average. Last season, he was Hilo's top pitcher, sporting a 4-3 record and a 1.93 ERA. Sagara, a former Leilehua player, is the top moundsman for the Vulcans this season. Honma and his Hawaii teammates will host WAC leader Cal State-Northridge in a five-game series beginning Friday. ** `Bows Sign Guard ** Kawika Akina, a point guard out of Kahuku High School and Dixie College of Utah, yesterday made a verbal commitment to play for the University of Hawaii next season. A 5-11, 160 pounder, Akina graduated from Kahuku in 1991 and after working for a year and serving a two-year stint as a missionary for the Mormon Church, he enrolled at Dixie where he started at the point, averaging 12 points, 8 assists, and 3 steals per game. ** Castro to HPU ** Yesterday, 1996 Hawaii high school basketball player of the year Isaac Castro of Moanalua signed a letter of intent to play for Hawaii Pacific University. Castro, a 6-4 forward, averaged 18 points per game in the state tournament last month to lead Na Menehune to their first-ever state hoop title. "He's extremely athletic," said HPU coach Tony Sellitto who plans to redshirt Castro next season. "He's the kind of player who is very lively- -always active." ** Handy Earns Honor ** Former University of Hawaii forward Phil Handy was named to the Continental Basketball Association All-Rookie team yesterday. Since leaving UH in 1995, Handy was one of the last players cut from the roster of Golden State of the NBA. He then played briefly for the Harlem Globetrotter's European team before landing a spot with Omaha Racers of the CBA, where he averaged 11.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He has received an invitation from the NBA's Portland Trailblazers to play on their summer league team in the Rocky Mountain Region. ** Ocean Sports News ** Three pro surf contests are scheduled to take place on Oahu's south shore in the next couple months. The top-ranked Rainbows, who close their regular season with two non-conference matches against California next weekend, completed MPSF play with an unblemished 19-0 record. Overall, they are 25-1, with their only loss a non-conference match against second-ranked UCLA. Last night, Yuval Katz led the Hawaii kill parade with 21, while Naveh Milo and Aaron Wilton contributed 12 and 11 respectively. ** Honma's Cycle Propels Baseball Bows ** Neil Honma hit for the cycle last night in Hawaii's 15-6 Western Athletic Conference victory over Cal State-Sacramento at Rainbow Stadium. A sophomore from Pearl City High, Honma went 5 for 5, lacing out two singles, a double, a triple, and a homer. His two-run round-tripper in the seventh sparked a nine-run Rainbow rally in the inning that erased a 4-2 Hornet lead. Honma is only the fifth Hawaii player to hit for the cycle. A crowd of 1,196 watched the Rainbows improve to 24-16 overall and 7-8 in the WAC. A Special Events Arena crowd of 8,576, which made the Bows' the first men's college volleyball team to eclipse the 100,000 mark in season attendance, witnessed the massacre. "We got our butts kicked," admitted Stanford coach Ruben Nieves. "I don't mean to take anything away from the crowd but that team is good with 8,000 people in the arena or eight people in the arena. They are a very, very good team." The magnificent Rainbows (24-1 overall) can clinch a perfect 19-0 campaign in the MPSF with a win over the Cardinal tomorrow night. Jason Ring added 10 more. ** Baseball Bows Host Hornets ** Hawaii will host Sacramento State in a three-game Western Athletic Conference baseball series that begins tonight at Rainbow Stadium. Prior to tonight's series opener, the Bows and Hornets will complete a game that was postponed because of rain on March 3 in Sacramento. The Hornets (0-13, WAC) were leading 15-9 entering the bottom of the eighth inning. Pitino, only 23 then, was an assistant to Bruce O'Neil at Hawaii from 1974-'76 and even served as the interim coach of the 'Bows for the final six games of the '76 season following O'Neil's dismissal for NCAA violations. ** Harding's Video a Hit ** In search of a pro football team to hook up with, former UH football player Matt Harding turned to technology to aid his cause. The 5-9, 163-pound fleet-footed receiver spent half a month editing videotapes of Hawaii football games to produce a 40-minute personal highlight film that he sent to National Football League and Canadian Football League teams. His advertising worked not only for himself, but also for two other former-Bows--quarterback Rodney Glover and defensive back Robbie Blakeney, who were offered two-year contracts by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. Yoshimasu, a Castle High product, shut out the Warriors for the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the win. Last night at Rainbow Stadium, the Vulcans pulled ranked, defeating the UH Rainbows 4-3 on the second day of the Rainbow Easter Baseball Tournament. Brendan Sagara, a stocky 190-pound righthander from Wahiawa, went the nine-inning distance for Hilo, spacing out nine hits and striking out three. "He's a real bulldog," said UHH coach Joey Estrella. "It was his game." Said Sagara: "I wasn't about to let coach take me out. I wanted this one." The Rainbows, losers of four of their last five games, fell to 18-14 and 1-1 in the tournament. "It was like batting practice for them for three days," said a dismayed UH coach Les Murakami, who saw his pitching staff surrender 40 hits and 36 runs to FSU in the three-game weekend series. Riding a wave of optimism after winning a couple games on the road last week, the Rainbows (18-13 overall and 5-7 WAC) now must find themselves and attempt to re-group quickly for the annual Easter Tournament, which begins today at Rainbow Stadium with three games. A crowd of 6,871 was on hand to see the Rainbows improve to 19-1 overall and 13-0 in the conference. Hawaii is a win away from becoming the first team to clinch a berth in the MPSF postseason tournament. Yesterday, Yuval Katz, finally free of the flu bug that has dogged him the last week and a half, ripped 23 kills to pace the Rainbows. "We kind of wanted to dominate these teams and kill them," said Katz. "We did that (on Friday night). I think we did that today, too." The Rainbows hit the road for four matches this week. Takanohana (14-1) grabbed his 12th overall title while Musashimaru finished a disappointing 9-6. Ozeki Wakanohana, Taka's brother, and sekiwake (junior champion) Musoyama shared runner-up honors with 12-3 marks. The Bulldogs, who pounded Hawaii ace Mark Johnson on Friday night, continued their hot hitting, ripping southpaw Paul Ah Yat for eight runs on 11 hits in the first six frames. The usually dependable Johnson, an Olympic team hopeful, was out of sorts, falling behind on hitters and operating out of rhythm. "He was his own worst enemy," said UH coach Les Murakami. First, an college baseball tournament featuring the University of Hawaii and several top-notch teams will take place during the week leading up to the game. In addition, two superstar coaches, Notre Dame's Lou Holtz and Florida State's Bobby Bowden have agreed to lead the respective North and South teams. BYUH, the tournament's fifth seed, fell to unseeded East Central Oklahoma 66-60. The Tigers (23-5), with three starters going the entire 40-minute distance, consistently outhustled and outbattled the taller and more physical Seasiders (24-7), who shot a dismal 32.8 percent from the floor. "They did a nice job on us defensively, just being physical on every shot," said BYUH coach Ken Wagner. Seventh-seeded Hawaii Pacific was also stymied in an 89-64 whipping at the hands of No. 10 Cumberland College (Kent.). Just like the opening round game, 7- foot-1 Sea Warrior center Juergen Malbeck was beset with foul difficulties, picking up three in the first half. Two other games scheduled for yesterday in addition to the make- up contest were postponed because of rain. With ace Mark Johnson on the mound, the Rainbows (16-9) had built a 3-0 lead after four and a half innings in the series opener on Tuesday before rain stopped the contest. UH coach Les Murakami sent Paul Ah Yat to the mound in yesterday's continuation, and the southpaw struggled, hitting the first three batters he faced and eventually yielding three runs to the Matadors (22-5) in the fifth. Casey Chesier hit the a game-winning solo homer in the bottom of the seventh and final inning. In the second game, the teams battled to a scoreless tie after four innings before a rain shower forced umpires to stop play. That contest, and yesterday's third scheduled game, will be made up at Rainbow Stadium when the Matadors visit the Islands in April. ** Auburn a Tough Test for Wahine ** The UH Wahine will face a formidable NCAA Basketball Tournament first-round foe in Auburn. The Tigers, ranked 18th in national polls and appearing in the Big Dance for the 12th time, are one of seven Southeastern Conference teams to earn invitations to the tournament. "Auburn has got talent," said UH coach Vince Goo. "When you go 20-8 in the SEC, you know they've got talent, especially when their defense holds all those good teams to 58 points a game." The Tigers are led by scoring and rebounding leader Monique Moorehouse, a 6-3 center. Last night, in a game that finished after midnight in Oklahoma, BYUH, despite foul trouble by center Ionatana Enosa, was in control from the beginning as they surged to a 45-27 halftime lead. All contests will be seven-inning affairs. ** Wahine Getting Ready ** The UH Wahine basketball team is preparing for its NCAA Tournament first-round game against Auburn on Friday at Boulder, Colo. The main motivational source for the Wahine is their coach, Vince Goo, who led them to a 23-5 record this season after a trying 6-20 1995 go-round. "I want him to be proud of me," said Tania Brunton, Hawaii's leading scorer, who, along with Nani Cockett, sat out most of last season because of a knee injury. "He's a father figure," said assistant Serenda Valdez. "Their biggest way of paying him back is on the court and academically. They want him to be all-around proud." ** Ruffin Shines ** Former UH basketball player, now a reserve guard for the Philadelphia 76ers, came off the bench to score 24 points in the 76ers' 118-110 victory over the Toronto Raptors (16-45) last night at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. It felt good to come up big," said Ruffin, who has come under fire recently for trying and failing to carry the scoring load in crunch time for Philly (13-48). ** Local College Softball News ** Tiare Geolina is one of the leaders of the Hawaii Pacific women's softball team. A reserve in her first three seasons, Geolina, a Radford High grad and now a nursing major, starts in leftfield for the Sea Warriors. Since entering the conference three seasons ago, Northridge, ranked 11th nationally this season, is 9-0 at home against the Rainbows. The prevailing Santa Ana winds blowing out toward right-center field make Matador Field a hitter's dream and a pitcher's nightmare. Should the Wahine win, they will face the winner of the Colorado (25-8)--Tulane (21-9) match-up. Center Monique Morris, a 6-3 senior averaging 15.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, is Auburn's top gun.
