** Salud--True Local Boy **
One might expect a top-ranked pro boxer to live a life of glitz
and glamour--not Nanakuli's Jesus Salud, who will meet Michael
Gallati in a 124-pound non-title bout tomorrow night at Blaisdell
Arena. Now a resident of San Diego, Salud, a former WBA super-
bantamweight title-holder, has spent much of his non-training
time here helping his parents move from to their new home in
Honokai Hale. He turned down an offer to stay in a Waikiki
hotel, opting instead to stay at the family homestead in
Nanakuli. "He's still the same guy," said good friend and high
school classmate Anthony Palacio. "He didn't let success go to
his head." Said Salud: "I try to give everybody respect. I know
I'm not special."
** Hawaii Athletes Lead U.S. Karate Team **
Six Hawaii martial artists together won 21 medals and helped Team
USA to the team title at the World Karate Organization World
Championships last weekend at Ontario, Canada. In the
competition that included about 1,000 athletes from 31 countries,
a half dozen Hawaii residents glowed brightly. The six were
China Anderson, Elisa Au, Gina Au, Barbara Chinen, Linda Donner,
and George Kotaka. Chinen performed brilliantly, earning four
gold medals and a silver.
** Rough Day for Pavao **
The Honors Course at Ooletwah, Tenn. wasn't kind to Mike Pavao.
The University of Hawaii golfer fired a disappointing 13-over 85
in the opening round of the NCAA Golf Championships yesterday and
is in 145th place (of 156). Said Pavao: "I was hitting it well
on the driving range, but I lost confidence, I guess, on the
course." Pavao, the Western Athletic Conference champion, said
he'll have to "shoot real low" today to have any kind of chance
of staving off elimination. "I'll try my best," he said. "I want
to have fun."

** Nunokawa: Gender Equity or Else **
Hawaii Gender Equity Sports Club president Jill Nunokawa says
that administrators of local prep sports will be subject to legal
action if steps aren't taken to provide equal opportunities for
female high school athletes in the Islands. Said Nunokawa, a
public defender and former UH Wahine athlete: "The bottom line is
they're not recognizing any discrimination." One of the
specifics that Nunokawa pointed out is that the girls' basketball
season should run concurrently with the boys'. According to
Hawaii High School Athletic Association president Al Nagasako,
the HHSAA is "doing okay. But if we're not in compliance, then
we'd better work toward it."
** Boxing at Blaisdell on Friday **
A pair of junior featherweights (124 lbs.), local boy, Jesus

The University of Hawaii's Mike Pavao will join 155 other golfers
in the NCAA Championship Tournament that begins today at
Ooltewah, Tenn. After two rounds, only the top nine players will
move on to compete for the NCAA individual title. "It's a tough
course," said Pavao. "It's long and the greens are fast and
tricky. But everybody faces those conditions, not just me."

** Sumo Day 3 Results **
Rumors of impending retirement swirled as grand champion Akebono

Tokyo Grand Sumo Tournament yesterday. The 27-year-old yokozuna,
coming off a knee injury, fell to 1-2 in the tournament after

requires that a grand champion retire if he has an extended
losing string or misses several tournaments because of illness or
injury. Improving to 3-0 yesterday were yokozuna Takanohana and
a trio of ozekis: Wakanohana, Takanonami, and Musashimaru

pounce on it. "Right now I'm living in the land of lava, and I
like it here," said Lopes, now a counselor at Waimea Intermediate
on the Big Island. "But if I get the opportunity to coach, my
bags are packed." Lopes is best remembered for leading the
Silverswords to national prominence, in particular a 77-72
triumph over top-ranked Virginia and Ralph Sampson in 1982. He
resigned from Chaminade in 1990, saying he could no longer "feed
the monster" he had created.
** Sea Warriors Ready for Tourney **
A three-week hiatus complete, the Hawaii Pacific Wahine softball
team will begin play in the four-team NAIA Far West Region
Playoffs tomorrow in California. The Sea Warriors (27-10),
ranked No. 6 nationally, are the top seeds. At stake in the
double-elimination tourney is a spot in the 16-team NAIA National
Championship Tournament May 15-18 at Decator, Alabama. "Because
of our high ranking," said HPU coach Howard Okita, "we have a
good chance of going to nationals even if we don't win the
regional."
** Kona Climber Arctic Bound **
Renowned rock climber and part-time Kona resident Warren
Hollinger is northbound to the Arctic Circle to try and conquer a
4,500 rock wall on Baffin Island. Never scaled before, the wall
may be the most challenging climb in the world. Said Hollinger:
"On a good day, we might do 400 feet. On a bad day we might not
gain more than 150." Hollinger and his climbing mates will use a
pulley system to hoist a quarter ton of equipment and food with
them. With no ledges to perch on, the team will sleep in port-a-
ledge--a tent-like piece of equipment that can be lodged into a
rockface. "I kind of liken (rock climbing) to big wave surfing,"
said Hollinger. "There are a lot of very good surfers but not
all want to or can handle big waves. Same thing with climbing."

** Pink Slip for Murakami? **
In his weekly column, *Honolulu Advertiser* sportswriter Ferd
Lewis examined the travails of the University of Hawaii baseball
program, pointing out the dents in a once smoothly-cruising
limousine. Lewis pointed out the following:
--for the past four seasons, the Rainbows have finished in the
lower echelon of the WAC, a collection of teams that aren't
exactly world-beaters (Hawaii has had a 43-64 conference
record over the past four seasons);
--Hawaii was swept 6-0 by Fresno State and lost 4 of 6 games
to San Diego State, two teams the Bows used to defeat on a
regular basis.
--Bow pitchers have were tagged for 5.63 earned runs per game,
the most in 20 years;
--UH hitters managed just 13 homers this season, the lowest
total since 1978. Meanwhile, opponents ripped 38 round-
trippers against Hawaii.
In summarizing the Rainbows' plight, Lewis exclaimed the need for
changes in the UH program and did everything short of calling for
the dismissal of Hawaii coach Les Murakami. Are Murakami's days
as UH field boss numbered?
** UH Wants '98 Final Four **
University of Hawaii officials are in the process of obtaining a
bid to host the 1998 NCAA Men's Volleyball Final Four.
Representatives from the NCAA said that their decision will not
be announced until October. The Rainbows finished fourth last
year and second this season. Ball State will host the 1997 Final
Four at Muncie, Indiana.
** Do-or-Retire for Akebono? **
Facing pressure from the sumo higher-ups, grand champion Akebono
--also known as Chad Rowan of Waimanalo--will attempt a comeback
in the upcoming May tournament after missing parts or all of the
past three bashos because of a knee injury. If Akebono misses
another tournament or doesn't do well even he does compete, sumo
officials will request that he retire (grand champions cannot be
demoted). According to reports, the 6-foot-8 yokozuna has been
practicing well in preparation for the next 15-day tourney that
begins this Sunday at Tokyo's Ryogoku Sumo Arena. Fellow grand
champion Takanohana, the winner of 12 tournaments, is a
prohibitive favorite. Akebono has won eight bashos.
** Olympic Goal Fuels Isle Athletes **
Several athletes with Hawaii ties have qualified or are vying for
spots on the United States Olympic team. In yachting, Kailua's
John Myrdal, a former University of Hawaii sailor, is in ninth
place at the Yachting Trials at Savannah, Georgia. In beach
volleyball, which will debut in the Olympics this summer, seven
former isle athletes are in the hunt for spots, including Carlos
Briceno, Lee LaGrande, Leif Hanson, Danalee Bragado, Karrie
Poppinga, and Janice Harrer. In volleyball, for UH Wahine Teee
Williams will likely make the U.S. Women's team while Punahou
grad Mike Lambert, now a player for Stanford, is the running for
men's team spot.

** Throng Greets Bows **
Armed with balloons, signs, leis, and the aloha spirit, hundreds
of fans crowded the Honolulu International Airport yesterday
afternoon to greet the UH men's volleyball team after their
flight home from the mainland. The day before, the Rainbows had
endured an excruciating 5-game loss to UCLA in the NCAA title
match at the Bruins' Pauley Pavilion. "These certainly aren't
fair-weather fans," said sophomore middle-blocker Rick Tune while
scanning the airport throng. "Imagine what would have happened
if we had won the damn thing." Despite the disappointment, coach
Mike Wilton and his 'Bows were optimistic about the future of
men's volleyball at UH. "We'll be good enough to have another
shot at (the title) next year," said Wilton. "That's the goal."
If the Rainbows are to reach college volleyball supremacy,
they'll probably have to do so without sophomore superstar Yuval
Katz, who confirmed yesterday that he will move on to play for
pay next season. "I loved my time here," said Katz. "The fans
who came down today and who supported us all season have been
great. But I feel it's time for me to move on."

** Bruins Edge Bows for Title **
In the longest NCAA championship match ever, top-ranked UCLA
outlasted Hawaii in five hard-fought games, 15-13, 12-15, 9-15,
17-15, 15-12, to grab the 1996 men's college volleyball bragging
rights. It was the 16th NCAA net title for the Bruin men while
Hawaii was making its first appearance in a championship match.
A Pauley Pavilion crowd of 7,688, about half of whom were Rainbow
fans, and a state-wide Hawaii television audience witnessed the
battle. Leading the Rainbows was Yuval Katz, almost without a
doubt the best player to ever wear the green and white. He
drilled 47 kills against an imposing Bruin front line. In a post
match interview, Katz said barring "something really radical," he
will enter the pro ranks and not return for his junior year as a
Rainbow. UCLA started four players with Hawaii ties--All-
American setter Stein Metzger (Punahou), outside hitters Brian
Wells (Punahou), Fred Robbins (Kamehameha), and Paul Nihipali,
who grew up in California but has family in the Islands. "We all
shared in it," said Wells. "We didn't have to rely on one
player, and that's why I think we won."
** Iolani No Ka Oi **
It was celebration day yesterday on the Iolani campus as the
Raider boys captured the state baseball title and the Raider
girls brought home the girls state basketball title. Over at
Aloha Stadium in front of 1,584 fans, Iolani defeated Waiakea 4-1
to win its first state baseball crown since 1986. Both teams
managed just five hits, but the Raiders made the most of theirs,
especially Derek Ching's bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the
second. Ryan Yamamoto pitched six strong innings for Iolani,
striking out 12 before yielding to reliever and tourney MVP Danny
Kimura in the top of the seventh. Kimura retired the side in the
final frame to seal the victory. Meanwhile, with a Special
Events Arena crowd of 2,500 looking on, the Raider girls edged
Kamehameha 57-52 for state high school basketball supremacy.
Tiana Fuertes, the tournament MVP, scored 34 points in perhaps
the most outstanding state final performance ever. "She's a
great player," said Kamehameha coach Al Apo. "It's not like we
were giving her wide open shots."

** Spring Fling Pau for Football Bows **
Three weeks of spring football practice came to end for the UH
Rainbows and new coach Fred vonAppen, who declared yesterday's
final scrimmage as "nice closure." After sputtering all spring,
the Rainbow offense cruised smoothly up and down Cooke Field
yesterday to the tune of 6.9 yards per play and 491 total
yardage. Said quarterback Johnny Macon, locked in a duel with
Glenn Freitas for the starting signal-caller job: "All spring, it
was like the end zone didn't like us. Today, we got along."
Macon threw for two long scoring plays--a 70-yarder to Dillan
Micus and a 41-yarder to Josh Hawkins.
** Baseball Bows Bow Out **
The UH baseball team completed its end-of-season collapse by
dropping its final game, 7-2, to Fresno State yesterday at
Fresno, Calif. The Bulldogs batter Hawaii starter Robby Robinson
for 10 hits and five runs. The Rainbows, who lost their final
seven games, end their 1996 campaign with a 29-26 overall and 12-
18 Western Athletic Conference record. It was Hawaii's fourth
straight losing season in the WAC.

Johnson, FSU knocked around southpaw Paul Ah Yat to notch a 12-3
win. The Bulldogs (34-22 overall and 19-10 WAC) jumped to a 10-1

In a replay of last season's state title tilt, Iolani and
Kamehameha will tangle for the 1996 Hawaii High School Athletic
Association girls' state basketball championship tonight at the

demolishing OIA runner-up Radford 72-49. Center Tesa Ho scored
21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Raiders. Tiana
Fuertes added 15 points. In the other semifinal, Kamehameha

** Bows Advance to NCAA Final **
Outblocking and outhitting their taller opponents, the University
of Hawaii Rainbow men defeated Penn State, 15-9, 15-13, 13-15,
15-7, in a national volleyball semifinal match in front of 4,188

match, the 'Bows will meet defending titlist UCLA, a 15-7, 15-8,
15-10 victor over Lewis (Illinois) in the other semi. To win
last night, Hawaii outblocked the taller Nittany Lions 28-17 and

Jason Ring (8 blocks, .536 kill percentage), and company shut
down Penn State's usually lethal All-American Ivan Contreras, who
hit a dismal .038 against a fired-up Bow squad. "They tracked me
well and were there waiting for me," said Contreras. Hawaii (27-
2) now turns its attention to the powerful Bruins (25-5), the
winners of 15 volleyball national titles over the years. The
Rainbows have defeated UCLA in two of three meetings this season.
"It feels good to win," said UH coach Mike Wilton. "But it'll
feel even better with a win on Saturday night."
** Bulldogs Maul 'Bows **
With ace pitcher Mark Johnson taking the mound, a game akin to a
shaving commercial was supposedly in order. However, such was
not the case yesterday as Fresno State ripped Johnson for nine
runs in the third inning on its way to a 13-3 Western Athletic
Conference baseball victory over the Hawaii at Bulldog Stadium in
Fresno. The Rainbows took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the
third frame when things began to unravel. Fresno sent 14 batters
to the plate in the inning, battering the usually rock-solid
Johnson, who was playing in front of several dozen pro scouts in
probably his last game as Rainbow. With the loss, Hawaii fell to
29-24 overall and 12-16 in the WAC. FSU improved to 33-22 and
18-10. Game two of the three-game series is today.
** Warriors upset Warriors in State Baseball **
Waiakea scored all three of its runs in the second to the last
inning to upset top-seeded Kamehameha 3-2 in a quarterfinal game
of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state baseball
tournament yesterday at Aloha Stadium. Chris Gossert allowed
just three hits to a Warrior team that had terrorized ILH
opponents for a .392 average this season. Also named the
Warriors, Waiakea now advances to a semifinal matchup tonight
against Kauai High, a 3-1 winner over Aiea yesterday. In the
other semifinal, second-seeded Castle will meet ILH runner-up
Iolani. Yesterday, the Knights downed Mililani, 5-1, and the
Raiders cruised to a 12-3 win over Maui High.
** ILH vs OIA in Girls Hoop Semis **
The top two teams in the Oahu Interscholastic Association will
take the top two teams from the Interscholastic League of
Honolulu tonight in the semifinals of the Hawaii High School
Athletic Association girls' state basketball tournament at the
Special Events Arena. Top-seeded OIA title-winner McKinley will
meet ILH runner-up Kamehameha in one Final Four game while
second-seeded Iolani--the ILH and defending state champions--will
face OIA West winner Radford in the other. All four advanced
with victories in yesterday's quarterfinal round. McKinley
crushed Kapaa 55-36, Iolani blasted Lahainaluna 71-39, Kamehameha
topped Baldwin 43-25, and Radford edged Hilo 64-59.
** Sports Shorts **
Hawaii's Mike Pavao fired a 5-under 67 to take a two-lead after
the opening round of the West Athletic Conference men's golf
tournament yesterday at the Cheyenne Country Club at Cheyenne,
Wyoming. The Rainbows are fourth in the four-man team
competition.

** Top Honors for Katz, Metzger **
Hawaii's Yuval Katz and UCLA's Stein Metzger were named co-
players of the year by the American Volleyball Coaches
Association, which announced its All-America team yesterday.
Katz, a sophomore from Israel, leads the nation in kills per
game. Metzger, a Punahou graduate, is the setter for the Bruins.
Hawaii setter Eric Pichel also was named to the first team while
outside hitter Aaron Wilton earned second team honors. Both Katz
and Metzger earned All America honors last season and have led
their teams into the NCAA Final Four which begins today at UCLA's
12,000-seat Pauley Pavilion. The Rainbows will take on Penn
State in one national semifinal while UCLA will meet Lewis
University (Illinois) in the other. A crowd of about 6,000, half
of whom may be fans from Hawaii, is expected. The UH game will
televised live in the Islands via Oceanic Cable channel 31
beginning at 2:30 p.m. HST.
** Oahu Schools Not Neighborly in State Baseball **
The good neighbor policy wasn't evident at Aloha Stadium for
yesterday's opening round of the Hawaii High School state
baseball tournament as Oahu schools sent two neighbor island
teams packing for the consolation bracket. Playing the
inhospitable hosts were Aiea, a 5-4 winner over Baldwin of Maui,
and Mililani, which notched a 6-3 upset win over Hilo, the BIIF
champion. One outer island team--Waiakea--did prevail yesterday,
defeating Kaiser 5-2. Iolani shut out Pearl City, 3-0, in
another first round game. The tournament's seeded teams enter
the competition today after opening round byes. The quarterfinal
match-ups are as follows: No. 1 Kamehameha vs Waiakea, No. 2
Castle vs Mililani, No. 3 Maui vs Iolani, and No. 4 Kauai vs
Aiea.
** Four Advance in Girls' State Basketball **
Two neighbor island teams and two from Oahu moved into today's
quarterfinal bracket with first-day wins in the Hawaii High
School State girls' basketball tournament. The games were the
first-ever high school competition at the University of Hawaii's
Special Events Arena. In the top fray of the day, OIA West champ
Radford edged Punahou, 75-74, in overtime. In other games,
Kamehameha topped Honokaa, 48-39, Kapaa crushed Pearl City, 57-
31, and Lahainaluna nipped Castle, 48-46. In today's games, top-
seeded McKinley will face Kapaa, No. 2 Iolani will square off
against Lahainaluna, No. 3 Hilo will meet Radford, and No. 4
Baldwin will challenge Kamehameha. Iolani is the defending
champion.
** Wahine to Close Regular Season **
The UH Wahine softball team will conclude regular season play
with a pair of doubleheaders this weekend against Nevada-Las
Vegas at the Wahine Softball Stadium. Since the Wahine are on a
precarious bubble as far as postseason competition is concerned,
the games could be the final ones of the season for three Wahine
senior outfielders--Heather Williams, Julie Luft, and Richlyn
Tada. Williams is a Mililani High grad, Luft is from Huntington
Beach, Calif., and Tada came to the Wahine via Sacred Hearts
Academy.
** Bows End Season in California **
Les Murakami and his UH baseball team will conclude their season
with a three-game road series against Fresno State. Earlier this
season, the Bulldogs (17-10 WAC) swept Hawaii (12-15 WAC) at
Rainbow Stadium. "Our guys are determined to go out well," said
Murakami. Noting his team's 6-5 conference record on the road
compared to a 6-10 mark at home, Murakami referred to his team as
"road warriors" and remarked that "this is the first team that I
ever had like this. I'd be a millionaire if I could figure it
out." A soon-to-be millionaire could be Rainbow pitcher Mark
Johnson, who will forego his senior season with Hawaii to turn
professional. He is projected as a top-20 pick in the upcoming
draft. Johnson (6-4, 4.09 ERA) will take the hill for the final
time as a Rainbow in today's series opener. "I'm going to give
110 percent for this team," said Johnson, "just like I've always
done."

** Bows-Lions Battle Tomorrow **
The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team begins its second
Final Four quest tomorrow (2:30 HST) when the Rainbows (26-2)
meet Penn State (24-5) in a national semifinal match at UCLA's
Pauley Pavilion. Hawaii, led by sophomore superstar Yuval Katz
and senior setter Eric Pichel, is the at-large entry. The
Nittany Lions, the East region winner, is sparked by two-time
All-American Ivan Contreras, a 6-4 outside hitter from Mexico.
The Rainbows crushed PSU in a match in January at the Special
Events Arena but the Lions have improved steadily throughout the
season as freshman setter Justin Otto found his stride.
Tomorrow's winner will take on the victor of the other Final Four
semifinal match between UCLA and Lewis (Illinois).
** Walk-ons Make Splash for Football Bows **
Two walk-on defensive lineman have performed impressively enough
to make strong bids for starting honors for the UH football team.
The two--Jacob Saole and Kekoa Kilcoyne--are thankful for getting
shots. Saole, a 6-foot, 269 pounder from St. Louis High, was
passed over by recruiters as a Crusader senior because of a knee
injury. Kilcoyne, 6-foot-1, 246 pounds, is a Punahou grad who
also did not strike the fancy of Division I schools in his final
year as a Buffanblu. Said defensive line coach Ulima Afoa: "I
don't think about who's on scholarship and who's not on
scholarship. As far as I'm concerned, you have to play the ones
who'll do what you want. These two are making the plays and
doing the job."
** Warriors, Knights Favored **
If the prognosticators are correct, Kamehameha and Castle will
meet on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium for the Hawaii High
School state baseball title. The ILH champion Warriors and the
OIA kingpin Knights are seeded first and second respectively in
the tourney that begins today at Aloha Stadium with four games.
Kamehameha features a potent lineup from top to bottom. As a
team, coach Vern Ramie's Warriors (18-3) batted .392 and averaged
11.3 runs per contest this season. "They can bang the ball,"
said Castle coach Joe Tom, a Kamehameha grad. Tom's Knights (12-
0) have also been impressive, particularly in the OIA title game
where they crushed Aiea, 14-4. Both coaches admit that pitching
and defense are keys to winning the tournament. Kamehameha's top
moundsman is Lanakila Niles (5-2, 1.74 ERA) while Castle is paced
by southpaw Ian Perio (7-0, 0.71). The Warriors and Knights,
along with Kauai High and Maui High, have drawn byes into
tomorrow's quarterfinal round. The following are the matchups
for today's opening round: Waiakea vs Kaiser, Hilo vs Mililani,
Baldwin vs Aiea, and Iolani vs Pearl City.
** Girls' Hoop Tourney Commences Today **
While the boys do battle for state baseball supremacy, the girls
will be competing for the top honors in high school basketball
today through Saturday at the University of Hawaii's Special
Events Arena. OIA champion McKinley and ILH title winner Iolani
are the favorites to meet in Saturday's state title game. Along
with Hilo and Baldwin, the Tigers and Raiders have drawn byes for
the opening round. Today's matchups are as follows: Kapaa vs
Pearl City, Castle vs Lahainaluna, Kamehameha vs Honokaa, Punahou
vs Radford.

** UH Hoop Teams Add Players **
Hoping to fill voids left by departing seniors, both the UH men's
and women's basketball teams received commitments from players
yesterday. The newest member of Riley Wallace's UH men's team is
Aaron Curry, a 6-2 guard from Howard College (Texas). Described
as "a complete player" by his coach at Howard, Curry averaged 12
points and seven assists per contest last season. He chose the
Rainbows over Oregon State, Colorado State, and New Mexico. UH
women's coach Vince Goo announced the addition of one player to
the Wahine's roster with the possibility of signing another.
Post player Sutton Helvey, a 6-2 junior-to-be from Grayson
Community College, the top-ranked JC in the country last season,
committed to the Wahine yesterday. She
