Lambert, who will return to Stanford for his junior year this fall, said the encouragement of the 8,000-plus fans in attendance helped to spur him and his teammates on. "It's amazing what the crowd can do for you," he said. "They give you that burst of energy." The Americans expected a tough match against Argentina, which upset the defending Olympic gold medalists from Brazil the night before. ----- Another Punahou grad, Chris Duplanty, started at goalie in the U.S. men's water polo team's 10-5 victory over Romania. The win earned the Americans a spot in the quarterfinals. ** Fit Wahines to Compete ** The Ms. Internationally Fit Championships will be held this weekend at two venues. On Saturday, contestants will gather at Queen's Beach in Waikiki to negotiate an obstacle course where they must drag a 100-pound kayak, negotiate a stack of surfboards, hurdle water hazards, climb a cargo net, and scale a coconut tree. The competition moves to the Japanese Cultural Center on Beretania Street on Sunday where competitors will perform aerobic routines and vie in swimsuit and sun dress phases. Mililani High grad Lisa Loney, 35, is the defending champion. This year's winner will receive $3,000. ** Sports Shorts ** Jaime Aloy and Brandon Toro each homered and drove in four runs apiece, and Michael Dartt added three hits as the Hawaii Island Movers pounded out a 16-4 exhibition win over the Hawaii All- Stars yesterday at Rainbow Stadium. Klayford Nakaahiki pitched six strong innings to earn the win for the Movers. The two teams will meet again tonight. ---- Maui edged PAL, 3-2, to capture the state P.O.N.Y Colt (15-16- year-olds) championship Monday at Francis Wong Stadium in Hilo. Jansen Medeiros fired a three-hitter, and Shane Victorino went 4- for-4 at the plate for Maui, which now advances to the Western Zone Tournament July 31-Aug. 4 at Santa Clara, Calif. ---- The Hawaii International Cup Youth Soccer Tournament begins today and continues through Sunday at Kapiolani Park. "I'm trying to get myself into a groove," said Williams. "I need to come out next time more fired up and don't try so hard. Just go out and play and have a good time." ---- Over at the weightlifting venue, Maui's Vernon Patao finished 22nd of 36 in the 141-pound division. He hoisted a total of 622 pounds (270 snatch, 352 clean & jerk). Naim Suleymanoglu of Turkey, nicknamed "Pocket Hercules," won his third consecutive Olympic gold medal with a 739 pound total. Patao credited his coach, his friends, and his wife for helping him progress to a level where he is competing with the best in the world. "They are the ones who have been pushing me a lot," he said. ** Football Bows to Barbers ** It's official. The UH football team will conduct its preseason camp at Barbers Point Naval Air Station from August 10-24. The switch in practice venues was necessary because the grass field in the UH quarry is undergoing refurbishing. Practice sessions will be open to the public but visitors must go through check-in procedures at the Barbers Point entrance gate. ---- In a related story, UH coach Fred vonAppen announced that it will be unlikely that his team will fly to the mainland for road games on chartered flights. Instead, the Bows will catch Thursday morning flights for Saturday road contests. Said vonAppen: "I don't like the idea of taking the players out of school for two days but it's unavoidable is we don't charter." ** Johnson Stroking Along ** Former University of Hawaii pitcher Mark Johnson has begun the negotiating contract terms with the Houston Astros, who drafted him in the first round of the Amateur Baseball Draft in June. According to Johnson, the Astros made "a good offer," but negotiations are still in progress. Meanwhile, the hard-throwing righthander has been keeping busy by doing maintenance at his family's home in Springboro, Ohio. So far, he's painted the inside of their three-car garage and is in the process of installing a sink. ** Swimming News ** Stephen Adler won first-to-finish honors at the 2.4 mile Reverse Bay to Lani's ocean swim race on Sunday. Adler's winning time was 44 minutes, 49 seconds over a course that began at Waimea Bay and ended at Laniakea. Runner-up Carl Larsen finished about a minute behind. The winner of 10 OHCRA titles in the last 12 years, Outrigger had played second fiddle to Lanikai for most of this season. Said Outrigger coach Kalani Schrader: "Everyone has pulled together these past few weeks. It was like everybody got together and said, 'Hey, we don't want to lose this thing.'" Lanikai club president Mauliola Aspelund said her club was disheartened but still optimistic. In women's competition, Megan Abubo, Keala Kennelly, and Rochelle Ballard were all eliminated prior to the semifinal round. ---- The San Francisco Seals nipped the Hawaii Island Movers, 5-4, in an Alaska League game last night at Rainbow Stadium. ---- West Oahu routed East Oahu to capture the Hawaii P.O.N.Y. Palamino (17-18-year olds) championship yesterday at the Ala Wai Field. West Oahu now will advance to the West Regional tournament to be held Aug. 4-11 at San Dimas, Calif. ---- The Hawaii Senior All-Stars, composed of recent Hawaii high school graduates, crushed a team from Queensland, Australia, 40-6, in the Down Under Bowl last Friday in Australia. Both had entered the final day with 12-2 marks. Earlier, previous co-leader Takanonami lost to Kaio to finish at 12-3. In other matches involving Hawaii rikishi, Musashimaru finished at 10-5 by crushing Wakanohana (10-5), Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) completed the tourney with an 8-7 record by topping Higonoumi. ** Hui Wa'a Title to Lokahi ** Yesterday at Keehi Lagoon, Lokahi captured its 10th consecutive Hui Wa'a Championship. Based at the Ala Wai Canal, Lokahi has won every Hui Wa'a Association championship regatta since 1987. Said Lokahi head coach Michael Cushnie: "It went better than I expected. "The way this tournament works, one game does not make the tournament," said a disappointed but still upbeat Duplanty. ---- Hilo wheelchair athlete Bong-Ho Lee will be a member of the U.S. team at the 1996 Para-Olympics in Atlanta in August. Lee will compete in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and marathon events. ---- Carl Cashen and Jeannie Wokasch won the respective men's and women's first-to-finish honors at the Kolekole Pass Half-Marathon yesterday. Cashen finished in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 50 seconds and Wokasch strided across the finish line in 1:24:46. ---- The Hawaii Tsunami crushed the California Central Valley Hydra, 5-0, last night at Aloha Stadium. With the win, the Tsunami improved to 8-5 in the U.S. International Soccer League. ---- The Hawaii Island Movers swept an Alaska League double-header from the San Francisco Seals last night at Rainbow Stadium. The 6-foot-8, 400-plus-pound yokozuna powered out ozeki (champion) Takanonami to improve to 12-1 in the tournament with two days remaining. Takanonami fell to 11-2. Grand champion Takanohana, 11-1 entering last night's match, was upset by Kaio (8-5). In other matches involving rikishi from Hawaii, Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) improved to 9-4 with a win over Kotonishiki (8-5), and Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) is now 6-7 after topping Tosanoumi (5-8). ** Newest Laker Sure to Fire-up Local Laker Fans ** For the eighth time in last nine years, the Los Angeles Lakers are set to return to Hawaii for pre-season workouts and games, this time with a huge new addition to their roster. Yesterday, superstar center Shaquille O'Neal signed a $120 million, multi- year deal with the Lakers. Hawaii fans are almost certain to pack the University of Hawaii's Special Events Arena on October 10 and 12 to see O'Neal, formerly of the Orlando Magic, and his new team take on the Denver Nuggets in exhibition games. Ticket prices for the contests are expected to be higher than last season's $27.50 max. "Just the fact that Shaq's coming, it'll be a sellout," said rabid local Laker fan Rodney Okai of Aiea. ** Bad News at Publinx: Hawaii Reps Eliminated ** The U.S. Amateur Public Links Golf Championship moves into its quarterfinal round today, and no representatives from Hawaii have advanced that far. Among the losers yesterday at the Wailua Municipal Course on Kauai were three local golfers--Honolulu's Clayton Gomi and Del-Marc Fujita, and Maui's Jay Kurisu. Gomi and Kurisu were ousted in the round of 32 while Fujita moved into the round of 16 before being eliminated. ** Lanikai-Outrigger Battle Expected ** Lanikai and Outrigger are the co-favorites to win the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association championship this Sunday at Keehi Lagoon. Lanikai has won four of six OHCRA regattas this season. On the other hand, Outrigger, the defending state titlist, has won just one, but did so in dominating fashion last Sunday at the John D. Kaupiko regatta at Kaneohe Bay. "We're coming on," said veteran Outrigger paddler Bruce Ames. "We're not underdogs. We're underestimated." Hui Nalu, which also has won a regatta this season, will occupy the spoiler's role. ** Sports Shorts ** Maui firefighter Vernon Patao was the recipient of good news last night when officials of the U.S. Olympic Weightlifting squad announced that he had earned a berth on the U.S. team. Patao will be making his second appearance at the Olympics. In 1992, he finished 10th in the 148-pound division. A three-time national champion, Patao will compete in the 141-pound class this time. ---- The 70-foot yacht Rage is on record pace and is expected to win first-to-finish honors for the 2,070-mile West Marine Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Kaneohe Bay. If it finishes by 11:55 this morning, Rage will break the record of 8 days, 7 hours, 13 minutes, 40 seconds it set in 1994. ---- Mark Williams tossed a five-hitter to spark the Hawaii Island Movers to a 5-0 Alaska League triumph over the San Francisco Seals last night at a rain-soaked Rainbow Stadium. Sean Murphy paced the Movers' offensive attack with three hits. ---- The Hawaii Tsunami will host the California Hydras for three United States International Soccer League matches this weekend. Tonight and Sunday, the teams will play at Cooke Field. Tomorrow, they meet at Aloha Stadium. ---- Roy Aukai has been named head football coach at Konawaena High School, succeeding Jim Barry, who resigned recently. Three days remain in the tourney. Tied with 11-1 records are yokozunas (grand champions) Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) and Takanohana, and ozeki (champion) Takanonami. Last night, Akebono defeated fellow islander Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) (8-4), while Takanohana forced out Musoyama (6-6) and Takanonami beat Mitoizumi (2-10). In an earlier match, Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) fell to 5-7 after a loss to Kotobeppu (6-6). ** Title Regattas Set ** Thirteen Oahu canoe clubs will vie for the championship of the Na Ohana O Na Hu'i Wa'a on Saturday at Keehi Lagoon. Lokahi, which has swept all the Hui Wa'a regattas this season, is a strong favorite to win the AA Division (18 or more crews). Kaneohe Canoe Club, with a strong corps of kids and teen paddlers, is poised to bring home the A Division crown. Said Kaneohe coach Willie Kapuwai: "If our kids do good, I like our chances." ---- The Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association will hold its championship regatta on Sunday at Keehi Lagoon. Lanikai and Outrigger are expected to do battle for that title. ** Three Locals Advance in Publinx Play ** Three Hawaii golfers moved on and four were eliminated as match play began yesterday at the 71st U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Wailua Municipal Course on Kauai. Advancing to the round of 32 were Maui's Jay Kurisu and Oahu's Clayton Gomi and Del-Marc Fujita. Ousted yesterday were Waipahu's Guy Yamamoto, the 1994 champion; the Big Island's Mike Pavao, a member of the UH golf team and the 1996 WAC champion; Kauai's Kalani Kiaaina, and Oahu's Steve Yogi. Last year's champion, Chris Wollman of Ohio, was among the other match play victors ** Two Protest Application Axing ** Two applicants for the vacant Kaiser High School athletic director post have filed grievances with the state Department of Education because they believe they were not given proper consideration for the job. Filing the protests were Roosevelt assistant AD Richard Haru and Kaiser coach/teacher Bill von Arnswaldt. The two were among seven applicants for the position. The tow were rejected, along with the five others, because they supposedly lacked the minimum qualifications for the job. Haru and von Arnswaldt denied the assertion and were given hearings last week. An announcement from the DOE is pending. ** Sports Shorts ** Kaneohe defeated Hilo twice to win the Little League Senior (13- 15 year olds) Division state championship yesterday at Pacheco Park in Pearl City. According to assistant athletic director Jim Donovan, more than 3,000 season tickets have been sold to date, compared to a total of 1,534 last season. Season tickets will remain available through July 23. An average of 6,000 fans attended each Wahine match last season, far exceeding coach Dave Shoji's 3,500 per match estimate. "I hope we'll be able to play as well as people think we can play," said Shoji. "That'll be the challenge for our team." ** Hancock in Bigs ** Former BYU star Ryan Hancock said his participation in the Hawaii Winter Baseball League helped to prepare him for the Major League. Hancock, who pitched for the Honolulu Sharks in 1994 (4-1, 2.29 ERA) and the West Oahu CaneFires in 1995 (5-1, 2.42), is now a member of the California Angels, where he sports a 4-1 record in 23.5 innings of work. "Playing winter ball in Hawaii helped a lot" said Hancock, well-known to local fans not only for his work in the HWBL, but for his play as a pitcher for the BYU baseball team and as a quarterback for the Cougar football squad. While playing for West Oahu, Hancock was an enthusiastic participant in the CaneFires' community service projects. Said West Oahu general manager Mark Nishiyama: "Ryan always volunteered to go to schools and talk to kids. He'd tell them to study hard, do their homework, and stay away from drugs." ** Sumo Day 11 Results ** Hawaii's Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) forced out fellow ozeki Takanonami to create a three-way logjam for the lead of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament. Musashimaru improved to 8-3 while Takanonami dropped to 10-1, the same records held by grand champions Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), who defeated Kaio (7-4), and Takanohana, who topped Minatofuji (3-8). "This is the worst organization I've ever seen in all of my life," said former Tsunami player Zack Kahirane, who recently left the team in a huff over what he claims were unkept promises by the Tsunami brass. Kahirane and his brother Joseph severed their ties to the Hawaii team after not receiving part-time jobs that they say Tsunami general manager Frank Doyle, now resigned, promised them. In other matches, tournament favorite Takanohana had a tough tussle with Daishoho but emerged as victor while Taka's brother Wakanohana was upset by Asahiyutaka. ** Seasider Fixture Passes Away ** Former Waianae High principal Raymond Torii, a fixture on the Seasider football team's bench in the past two decades, succumbed to cancer on June 29. He was 90. Torii, raised in Waiakea on the Big Island, was hired as the lead administrator at Waianae in 1957. He hired legendary Seasider coach Larry Ginoza in 1958. Said the now-retired Ginoza: "He was like a fixture. It's going to seem funny with him not around anymore." Torii was laid to rest in the trademark red jacket he always wore to Waianae games. "We thought it would be fitting," said his daughter, Ruth Okamoto. In addition to Okamoto, Torii is survived by his wife, Lily, two other daughters, and five grandchildren. ** Homegrown Report ** Two former Hawaii athletes were inducted into their college's athletic halls of fame recently. PETER KENDRICK (Radford '79) joins HENRY MARSH (Punahou) as a member of the Brigham Young University Cougar Club Athletic Hall of Fame. Kendrick was an All-American pitcher for BYU in the early 80s. Inducted into the Willamette Sports Hall of Fame was DAVID WONG (Damien '77), a football and baseball star for the school. ---- UC-Santa Barbara tennis player JEAN OKADA (Lahainaluna '92) earned first-team NCAA Division I All-America honors this season. Earlier this week, UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida axed a chunk of money from the budgets of three major men's sports, including $50,000 from the football program. Von Appen said he has been doing his part to help save money for UH, such as obtaining a shoe and apparel deal with Nike estimated at $20,000 and moving his team's pre-season practices to local military bases. "Rather than taking that (saved) money and pumping it somewhere else, we just lost it," he said. The grid boss maintained that "we have to be a little more ambitious in raising funds. The five can now either sign pro contracts or continue to practice with the team as alternates. Johnson was drafted by the Houston Astros in the first round of the baseball amateur draft last month. For the just-begun 1996-97 fiscal year, the Rainbow football team must operate with 50,000 fewer dollars, the men's basketball and baseball teams with $40,000 and $35,000 less, respectively. No women's teams will have their budgets cut. In a bit of brightness in UH's gloomy budgetary climate, men's volleyball coach Mike Wilton was given a pay raise. This season, he will earn $50,000, which is $9,000 more than he was paid last year. Dave Shoji (Wahine volleyball), Vince Goo (Wahine basketball), and Bob Coolen (softball) also will get pay boosts. ** HPU Inks TV Deal ** Hawaii Pacific athletic director Tony Sellitto announced the signing of a television deal with station KWHE for the coming season. As a result, a minimum of 12 HPU men's basketball games will be broadcast live in Hawaii and to KWHE's affiliate stations in Indiana, Louisiana, Colorado, and Wisconsin. "This is part of our concerted effort to get more exposure," said Sellitto. "We're not on a level yet where we can have stations bid for a contract (like the University of Hawaii), but we'd like to get there." Brothers John and Jim Foti, Mike Smith, Kalani Irvine, Rocky Owens, and Bo Eastabrooks have all paddled for Lanikai for at least 15 years. In their early years with the club, "we had no idea what we were doing," said John Foti. "But we learned through trial and error as the years went by." In the last several seasons, the Lanikai men, especially their senior crew, has dominated. They've won almost every regatta race they've entered and recently have added some very impressive feathers in their caps: the 1995 Molokai-to-Oahu title and two race victories at the Hamilton Cup in Australia. Said Eastabrooks: "There seems to be a winning energy and a real deep sense of pride now (in the club). Hopefully, it will ride for a while." ** OP Moves From Cal to Hawaii ** Oahu's North Shore will be the new venue for the OP Pro surf meet come this November. The 1996 OP Pro will be held Nov 16-25 at Haleiwa's Alii Beach with competition for men, women, and juniors. For nearly a decade and a half, the event was held at Huntington Beach, Calif. OP (Ocean Pacific) officials opted to change sites for the meet to take advantage of "better wave conditions." Waves are typically in the 6- to 8-foot range on Oahu's North Shore during the winter months while only 1 to 2- feet at Huntington Beach. "The whole tour is moving toward the direction of bigger and better waves," said Bonnie Crail, OP vice-president. ** Hawaii Connections at Olympics ** Hawaii will be well-represented at this summer's Atlanta Olympic Games with both volunteers and athletes. Ninety people from Kauai, most of them in their teens and early 20s, will serve as volunteers at the Games. The volunteer group, composed mostly of student-athletes from high schools on Kauai, will work five days a week at kiosks, providing information and selling souvenirs. Each will be paid $5 an hour and receive tickets to two Olympic events. While coaching at Seton Hall three years ago, Portland coach P.J. Carlesimo tried to recruit Handy. A 6-foot-5 guard, Handy was the last player cut by the Golden State Warriors last season. He will play for the Trailblazer's summer team in the Rocky Mountain Review, a pro off-season league. ** Harding Honored ** Sarah Harding, a 1996 graduate of Punahou and the state high school diving champion, was one of fifteen athletes named to the All-America team by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association. Driving a late model compact car at a high rate of speed near Laie, Keo lost control of the vehicle which careened off a telephone pole and into a building operated by Cackle Fresh Farms. Keo, an all-star running back who was to enter Brigham Young University this fall on a football scholarship, had been to four graduation parties that evening and had two passengers with him when the fatal crash occurred. The passengers suffered only minor injuries. ** Departing Kiyuna Claims Deck Stacking ** The soon-to-be replaced executive director of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association, Ed Kiyuna, said he was not given a fair shot to maintain the job he will no longer have come July 1. Kiyuna said that HHSAA president Al Nagasako, who recently resigned to accept an administrative post with the Department of Education, violated the HHSAA constitution in establishing the selection process for the director's position. The constitution stipulates that the HHSAA director should be selected only by members of the HHSAA executive board, a five-member body made of principals from the five participating leagues. Nagasako "stacked the deck," said Kiyuna, when he involved non-board members in the selection process. Former Kaimuki coach and athletic director Dwight Toyama was selected as the new HHSAA director. ** Six Advance, Two Ousted at Rip Curl ** Derek Ho and Ross Williams were eliminated while six other Hawaii surfers will advance to the third round of the Rip Curl Pro at St. Leu, Reunion Island. The meet is scheduled for June 24-29 1997 and is expected to pump several million dollars into Maui's economy. Swimmers ranging in age from 19 to 102 will be divided into five age groups for the meet. One possible entrant may be Maui Mayor Linda Crockett Lingle, 43, an active member of the Maui Masters swim team. ** Local Golf News ** By finishing first and second a qualifying tournament in Hilo this weekend, Big Island golfers Mike Pavao and Eric Yubata earned invitations to the National Public Links Tournament next month on Kauai. Playing at the Hilo Municipal course, Pavao won the qualifying event with a 36-hole total of 1-over 145. Yubata shot a 147. ** Aumura Hired at BYUH ** Roy Aumura, 42, has been named the head coach for the Brigham Young-Hawaii women's softball team. BYUH has not fielded a team since 1993. Aumura, an employee at BYUH, was an assistant coach for the Seasider team from 1988-1991, its first three years of competition. He also is an assistant football and basketball coach at Kahuku High School. ** Triathlon Set for Maui ** Some of the world's top triathletes are expected to compete for $30,000 in prize money at the inaugral Aquaterra Off-Road Triathlon World Championship on Nov. 3. The event will include a 1.1 mile ocean swim off of Wailea, a 25-mile bike ride up Haleakala, and 10-mile run across ranch lands on the slopes of the 10,000 foot mountain. Crash ** Kahuku High School football player Jason Keo died early yesterday morning when the car he was driving slammed into a telephone pole near Malaekahana on Oahu's North Shore. Keo, who transferred to Kahuku for his senior year after leading the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in rushing as a junior at Damien, was to enter Brigham Young University this fall on a football scholarship. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in his vehicle suffered minor injuries. The trio had been to several graduation parties that night and police found several empty beer cans in the vehicle. Police say the car, a 1995 Plymouth Neon, was travelling between 60 to 80 miles per hour when the accident occurred. ** Lanikai, Lokahi Paddle to Wins ** The beat rolls on for Lanikai and Lokahi as each won regattas in their respective canoe associations. Over at Waimanalo Beach or Oahu's windward side, Lanikai crushed its rivals to capture the title of the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association's Waimanalo Regatta. The victory was Lanikai's third in four tries this season. Grand champion Takanohana occupies the east side yokozuna ranking, the highest in sumo.
