** Wahine Sweep Nebraska **
Top-ranked Hawaii defeated No. 5 Nebraska, 15-12, 16-14, 15-9
last night at Normal, Illinois, to win the championship of the
NACWAA Women's Volleyball Classic. Tournament MVP Angelica
Ljungquist hammered 12 kills to lead the Wahine (2-0). Hawaii
coach Dave Shoji described the victory as "real ragged" but he
was pleased nonetheless. "I think we have room to grow," he
said. The Cornhuskers fought hard despite losing five starters
from their 1995 national championship team. Former University
High star Fiona Nepo is Nebraska's starting setter.
** Former Hawaii Prepsters Spark BYU **
The ones that got away played big roles in Brigham Young's 41-37
early-season football triumph over Texas A&M yesterday at Provo,
Utah. Former Hawaii prep stars Kaipo McGuire (St. Louis), Itula
Mili and Mark Atuaia (Kahuku) and K.O. Kealaluhi (Maui High)
figured prominently in the Cougar offensive attack. McGuire
caught two TD tosses, Mili and Atuaia combined for 96 receiving
yards, and Kealaluhi had 151 yards in receptions and snagged the
game-winning 46-yard TD toss from Steve Sarkisian with a minute
left to play.
** VonAppen Requests Switch **
Hoping to gain any advantage he can, University of Hawaii
football coach Fred vonAppen has requested that the Rainbows
occupy the makai sideline at Aloha Stadium for their season-
opener against Boston College next Saturday afternoon. UH's
bench has traditionally been on the mauka side, but vonAppen,
noting that the sun will shine on the mauka bench area for the
entire duration of the 3 p.m to 6 p.m game next week, requested
the switch. UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida said the request
will be granted but as a one-shot deal. WAC rules require that
the home team occupy the same side as the student section.
** Prep Football Report **

** Wahine Struggle, Win **
Not nearly as dominating as expected, the top-ranked University
of Hawaii Wahine survived a scare from No. 11 Florida, defeating
the Gators in five games, 15-12, 15-11, 6-15, 6-15, 15-13, in a
semifinal match of the NACWAA Volleyball Classic last night at
Normal, Illinois. "They outplayed us, no doubt," said a
concerned UH coach Dave Shoji, whose Wahine will take on No. 5
Nebraska in the Classic title game tonight. "It's really a
mystery to me what happened. I think we wanted to play so well
it got in our way." The match was the season-opener for both
teams. Joselyn Robins knocked down 18 kills for the Wahine, with
Angelica Ljungquist and Therese Crawford adding 17 and 16,
respectively. The Wahine hope to re-group tonight against the
Lady Huskers, the defending national champions. Sophomore Fiona
Nepo, an all-state player for University High two years ago, is
the starting setter for Nebraska, which defeated unranked
Illinois State in four games last night.
** Bows Still in the Running **
Guy Benjamin, the offensive coordinator for University of Hawaii
football team, said that he expects to run the veer option about
50 percent of the time for the first several games of the season.
He said that players' mastery of the much ballyhooed "West Coast
offense" has proceeded much slower than expected, thus
necessitating the need to use the veer part of the time. "I
can't worry what fans want," said Benjamin. "I'm here for the
players. To get them to be better, we're going to do what we
have to do, and, right now, they run (the veer) well." Benjamin
said he hopes to be running the West Coast offense, an attack
predicated on a controlled passing game, exclusively by season's
end. The Rainbows will open their 1996 season a week from today
at Aloha Stadium against Boston College.
----
In a related story, the UH Board of Regents approved an increased
salary scale for UH coaches. The increase was made to bring the
compensation more in line with what other coaches are receiving
across the nation. The head football coach's salary will go from
its present $66,000 to $96,000 range to $92,000 to $157,000. All
head coaches at UH, save for baseball and swimming, can expect
raises.
----
UH head coach Fred vonAppen announced that tight end Ryan Green
is ineligible to play because of an academic technicality. A
transfer from the now defunct University of Pacific football
program, Green supposedly lacks the number of credits in his
major to remain eligible, based on an interpretation by the Big
West Conference which UOP was a part of. VonAppen called the
situation "a grave injustice to the kid." An investigation of the
matter is ongoing.
** Prep Football Report **
Kamehameha 13, Waianae 12: At Aloha Stadium, running back Tui Ala
dashed 45 yards for a score on the Warriors' opening drive and

over the Seariders. The game marked the high school coaching
debut of Kanani Souza, a Kamehameha graduate and a former
assistant at the University of Hawaii.
----

** Katz to Return! **
Well, only temporarily. Yuval Katz, the player most responsible
for taking the University of Hawaii men's volleyball team to the
NCAA Final Four the past two season, will be in the Islands this
weekend to compete in the Emporio Armani Hawaii Beach Volleyball
State Championships. He will team with former Rainbow teammate
Naveh Milo and vie for the men's open crown. Katz had two more
years of NCAA eligibility remaining but opted to pursue a pro
career. A few weeks ago, Katz signed a contract to play in Greek
professional league with MGS Ethnikos. Milo will play for the
Rainbows this season.
** '96 UH Recruit Class Average, says vonAppen **
University of Hawaii football coach Fred vonAppen gave his first
class of recruits a grade of 'C.' Only 15 of the original 22
recruits are still with the team and those who remain haven't
filled holes in the offensive and defensive lines and in the
speed department. Said vonAppen: "I would say--and I don't want
the guys in this recruiting class to feel bad--that it's an
average class. It was a class one might have expected to
assemble after taking the job in early January/late December."
Four recruits are atop or near the top of the Rainbow depth
chart, including linebackers Stephen Gonzalez and Rufus Ayeni,
running back Sam Paneno, and defensive back Anthony Smith.
However, injuries, academic problems, and defections have trimmed
the class by a third. VonAppen said he was disappointed in the
attrition rate of his mostly junior-college-based class. "It's a
roll of the dice with junior college guys," he remarked. He
noted that he would recruit primarily from the high school ranks
in future years.
** Shoji: Florida No Slouch **
In an opening round match of the NACWAA Volleyball Classic
tomorrow at Normal, Illinois, the University of Hawaii Wahine
will take on Florida, a team that finished 35-2 last season but
has lost five starters. Commenting on her team's inexperience
and noting that five of Hawaii's top seven players are seniors,
Florida coach Mary Wise joked, "We are Hawaii one year from now."
Hawaii coach Dave Shoji said Florida is far from feeble. "When
you have a quality program as Florida has the last five years,"
he noted, "you're not going to be weak." Top-ranked Hawaii is
led by senior All-Americans Robyn Ah Mow and Angelica Ljungquist.
Senior hitter Julie Wood is the only returning starter for the
11th-ranked Gators.
-----
Shoji announced that he will redshirt three players this season:
freshman setter Keala Nihipali, sophomore middle blocker Lori
Garber, and transfer Leah Karratti.

** Margerum Has "Grail" **
Only a handful of Bill Walsh's original "West Coast Offense"
playbooks exist, and University of Hawaii assistant football coach
Ken Margerum has one. Said Margerum, a former player for Walsh at
Stanford and for the San Francisco 49ers, "It's special to me.
This book has the original offense that Bill Walsh used to win
five Super Bowls." UH offensive coordinator Guy Benjamin referred
to the playbook as "the grail." Hawaii head coach Fred vonAppen
acknowledged that the offense, based primarily on short and
intermediate passes, works well in theory but needs to be
executed properly to be effective. "They better break it open
and check out the Holy Grail," he said. "They're struggling out
here."
** Warriors, Seariders Highlight Prep Football Openers **
Former University of Hawaii assistant Kanani Souza will make his
high school coaching debut on Friday night at Aloha Stadium when
his Kamehameha Warriors tackle perennial OIA powerhouse Waianae
in a local high school preseason football game. Kamehameha
finished 7-5 last season and returns a host of starters on
offense, including three on the offensive front and top running
backs Tui Ala and Jacob Ordenstein. Waianae, 8-3-1 in '95 and
last season's OIA runner-up, returns half of its starters and is
particularly blessed with running backs.
----
In other prep news, Punahou athlete Scooter Martines announced he
will not play football this season in order to concentrate on
baseball. Martines, a first-team all-state selection at
linebacker as a junior for the Buffanblu, is also a two-time
member of the all-state baseball team. Punahou football coach
Dan Morrison announced that all-state volleyball player Kaione
Crabb, a 6-5, 260-pound senior, will take to the gridiron this
season. Crabb, who has a 31-inch vertical jump, will probably
play defensive end.

yesterday, capturing the Gotcha Lacanau Pro in 3- to 5-foot surf
at Lacanau, France. Jaquias defeated Kona's Conan Hayes in the
championship final to earn the $14,000 winner's check. Hayes,
making his first appearance in a final, earned $7,000 as runner-
up. Surfers from Hawaii now occupy four of the top ten spots on
the pro tour standings. Makaha's Sunny Garcia is third, Jaquias
fifth, Kapolei's Kalani Robb seventh, and Hayes tenth. Floridian
Kelly Slater, the defending world champion, currently resides at
the top of the rankings.

** Charles a Jade in the Rough for 'Bows **
When the University of Hawaii football team meets Boston College
next Saturday at Aloha Stadium, a walk-on player from Kauai could
be in the 'Bows' starting offensive backfield. Jade Charles, a
Canada-born, redshirt freshman from Kauai High School, has risen
to the top of the Rainbow depth chart at halfback after
impressive performances last spring and in the ongoing fall camp.
"He's one of the few players who can get out in space and make
people miss," said UH coach Fred vonAppen. "He's a player,"
added Rainbow quarterback Glenn Freitas. Charles' twin brother
Echo is a wide receiver on the team.
----
In other UH football news, vonAppen announced that receivers
Keith Parker and Bo Parks had left the team, and that former Maui
High star Robert Kemfort had been moved from running back to wide
receiver.
** Wahine Big Favorites in WAC **
The University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team, ranked number
one in the country, is an overwhelming favorite to dominate the
Western Athletic Conference this season. The Wahine made the
move to the WAC this year after 11 seasons in the Big West
Conference. According to Wahine defensive specialist Nalani
Yamashita, who played in the WAC for two seasons with Colorado
State before transferring, the difference between the two
conferences is noticeable. Said Yamashita: "Comparing our
caliber to the rest of the WAC, well, we'd be very up there and
they'd be in the middle." Hawaii's stiffest WAC competition
will come from 10th-ranked San Diego State and No. 19 BYU. Both
teams, however, are not in the same caliber as former Big West
rivals Pacific and Long Beach State. A non-conference schedule
that includes UCLA, Stanford, USC, and Nittaidai (Japan) will
help prepare the Wahine for postseason play. Hawaii opens its
1996 season on Friday with a match against 11th-ranked Florida in
the NACWAA Volleyball Classic at Normal, Illinois.
** Hula Bowl Gets NCAA Blessing **
After three years without sanctioning, the Hula Bowl renewed its
ties with the NCAA for the 1997 game. Accordingly, the all-star
game will be able to enlist the services of active NCAA coaches,
something it could not do the past three years. Notre Dame's Lou
Holtz and Florida State's Bobby Bowden will serve as head
coaches. Hawaii's Fred vonAppen, American Football Coaches
Association president Fisher DeBerry, and this season's NCAA
Division IAA, II, and II coaches of the year will serve as
assistants. Only senior players will be allowed to play. Not
restricted by the NCAA, the Hula Bowl was able to use
underclassmen the last several years.

** Faith Propels Kapihe **
A self-proclaimed party-guy a few years ago, University of Hawaii
football player Ellie Kapihe found religion and has since turned
around his life. A 6-3, 260 pound lineman out of Waipahu High
School, Kapihe admitted to drinking more than his share of
alcohol as a college freshman three years ago. Thanks to a
friend, Rebecca Downey, Kapihe became a devout Christian. Kapihe
started all 12 Rainbow games at offensive left tackle last
season. Because of his less than massive size, Kapihe has moved
to defensive end for the 1996 season and is making a strong push
for a starting berth. "He's doing a heck of a job," said
defensive line coach Ulima Afoa. "What's making his transition
easy is he's got a great work ethic. He works to improve and do
the little things to make himself a good lineman." In their '96
debut, Kapihe and his UH teammates will take on Boston College on
Aug. 31 at Aloha Stadium.
** Distance Victories for Lanikai, Kailua **
The Lanikai men and the Kailua women won their respective events
yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Outrigger Canoe Race that began
at Kailua Beach. Lanikai won the 26-mile men's race from Kailua
Beach to the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki in a time of 2
hours, 42 minutes, 45 seconds. Outrigger (2:45:07) and Waikiki
Surf Club (2:49:13) finished second and third. Earlier, Kailua
won the six-mile women's race from Kailua Beach to Mokolea Rock
and back in a time of 48 minutes, 49 seconds. Second and third
place finishers Koa Kai and Hui Nalu crossed the line less than
30 seconds back.

** Alexio Triumphs **
Champion Dennis Kaheke Alexio weathered a third-round knockdown
and came back to score a sixth-round knockout over challenger
Masaaki Miyamoto of Japan in a world heavyweight kickboxing title
match last night at the Blaisdell Arena. A crowd of about 6,000
saw Miyamoto land a kick to Alexio's chin, dropping the champion
seconds before the end of round three. "I never saw the kick,"
said Alexio, who claimed to be "maybe 80 percent" because of
injuries sustained in training to his left foot and knee. "I got
up, took a couple of deep breaths, and held my composure." In
the sixth round, referee Tony Villalon stopped the fight after a
minute was gone when Alexio (63-1) floored Miyamoto (31-2) with a
flurry of punches and kicks.
** UH Football Report **
Despite less than optimistic predictions by armies of naysayers,
members of the University of Hawaii football team remain upbeat
and confident after the completion of their first week of fall
practice. Most fans and sportswriters pick the Rainbows to
finish in the second division of the expansion-thickened Western
Athletic Conference. Said running back Tony Thomas, "Right now,
nobody expects anything from us. We've got something to prove.
We're going to surprise some people." Added cornerback Al
Hunter: "We love the game again. Last year, we played just to
play." Hawaii will host Boston College in the season opener for
both teams on Aug. 31 at Aloha Stadium.
** Hawaii Rules Amateur Surfing **
Operating in home waters, surfers from Hawaii captured 14 of 23
individual divisions and the team title at the Zeal Optics United
States Amateur Surfing Championships yesterday in 1- to 2-foot
surf at Ala Moana Bowl. "I would say it was a very good contest
for us," said Team Hawaii coach Ben Aipa. Among the bevy of
local champions were Gavin Sutherland (open men's surfing), Andy
Irons (junior men's surfing), Jenny Crusat (junior women's
surfing), Joel Centeio (menehune surfing), Craig Balmores (grand
masters surfing), and Edwin Nakazato (open men's bodyboarding).
Team Hawaii dedicated the victory to Randall and Carol Kim, who
were tragically gunned down days before by an enraged neighbor in
their Mililani home. Randall Kim, a well-known local surfing
standout in the late 70s-early 80s, was supposed to be a guest
speaker at yesterday's contest.
** Youth Teams Finish High **
Trailing 2-5 with two outs in the top of the seventh and final
inning, Spring, Texas rallied for five runs to defeat Aiea, 7-5,
and capture the Little League Junior Division (13-year-olds)
World Championship yesterday at Taylor, Michigan. Entering the
game with one loss, Aiea needed to defeat their unbeaten Texas
foes twice.
----
Aiea-Halawa finished third at the Little League Big League (16-
18-year-olds) World Series. On Friday at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,
North-Chicago defeated the Hawaii team, 6-3, to capture the U.S.
Championship. North Chicago advanced to the world title game
against Chinese Taipei.
** Beach Volleyball Beat **
With three victories yesterday, Makakilo's Danalee Bragado and
teammate Krista Blomquist advanced to the semifinals of the Evian
National Championships being held at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Among Bragado and Blomquist's victims yesterday was the second
seeded team of Karolyn Kirby and Nancy Reno.

** Wahine Better, Says Shoji **
With five experienced seniors among their top seven players, the
top-ranked University of Wahine volleyball team looks to be even
better than last season's 31-1 squad. Lost to graduation was
captain Jenny Wilton but everyone else returns. Setter Robyn Ah
Mow (5-8, senior) and middle blocker Angelica Ljungquist (6-3,
senior), first-team All-Americans in 1995, are Hawaii's marquee
players. Also back are high-flying outside hitters Joselyn
Robins (5-8, senior) and Therese Crawford (5-11, junior), middle
blocker Cecelia Goods (6-1, junior), and defensive specialist
Nalani Yamashita (5-4, senior). Chastity Nobriga (5-11, senior)
moves into Wilton's spot at opposite. Said UH coach Dave Shoji:
"Our team is much better this year, but we really can't be any
better. People can't expect us to be undefeated. And yet we are
better." Hawaii opens it season in the State Farm NACWAA Classic
at Normal, Illinois next Friday, taking on Florida in a first-
round match.
** Freitas Emerges in QB Battle **
If the season opener were today, Glenn Freitas would be the
starting quarterback for the University of Hawaii football team,
according to UH coach Fred vonAppen. Freitas, a 6-2 senior who
was recruited out of Waianae High to run Bob Wagner's spread-
option offense, was given little chance by anyone save himself to
earn the starting job in vonAppen's pass-oriented West Coast
offense. "He was the guy who had the grimmest scenario when he
came in," said vonAppen. "Here we come with this pass offense
and his name's not even mentioned for the first month. He fought
his way back into the loop." VonAppen credits Freitas for his
work ethic and leadership. "Players are very confident when he's
in there," said the UH coach. Hawaii's season opener against
Boston College is two weeks away.
** Sayonara Wins Kenwood Finale **
With a time of 39 hours, 10 minutes, 29 seconds, the American
yacht Sayonara won the final 385-mile, round-the-state leg of the
1996 Kenwood Cup series. Another American yacht, Boomerang,
finished a half hour back. The corrected time winner of the leg
has yet to be determined since all yachts had not finished by
press time. In the team competition, Australia edged USA Red.

** 'Bow QB Battle Down to Three **
After starting training camp with six quarterbacks, the
University of Hawaii football team is now down to three.
Injuries and a position switch have contributed to the attrition.
Still battling for the starting signal-caller job are senior
Glenn Freitas, junior Johnny Macon, and freshman Josh Skinner.
Three other freshmen--Hunter Young (strained rotator cuff), John
Gurasich (strained groin), and Jerimi Bourland (switched to
receiver)--are currently out of the hunt. "(The QB attrition
rate) is quite embarrassing considering we haven't put (full)
pads on yet," said offensive coordinator Guy Benjamin, who said
Freitas is slightly ahead in the QB race. Freitas, a former
Waianae High star, started the majority of games last season.
** "Locals" at Newell Camp **
Four players with ties to the Islands are among the bevy of
basketball behemoths taking part in Pete Newell's Big Man Camp at
the Special Events Arena. Attending the workouts are--
--Hawaii Pacific University center Juergen Malbeck, a 7-1,
250-pounder.
--BYU-Hawaii postman Ionatana Enosa, a 6-10, 245 pounder.
--University of Hawaii's 7-1, 265-pound Seth Sundberg.
--former Iolani and Willamette player Cavan Scanlan, a 6-6,
230-pound forward.
Malbeck, Enosa, and Sundberg will be returning for their senior
seasons at their respective schools while Scanlan, a recent grad
from Willamette, is hoping to land a spot with a European pro
team.
** Teee to Play **
After reconsidering her position, Teee Williams has agreed to
play for the Team USA in the upcoming Bank of Hawaii Cup
volleyball competition set for Sept. 12, 14, and 15 at UH's
Special Events Arena. Williams, an All-American for the UH
Wahine in the late 80s, had previously announced she no longer
would compete for the US National team following its
disappointing 7th place finish at the Atlanta Olympics. But she
changed her mind. "It's always good for me to come back (to
Hawaii)," said Williams, "because it's a place I'll always
treasure." Two-time Olympic champion Cuba, the Netherlands (5th
at Atlanta), and Japan will join the US team in the Hawaii Cup.
** Alexio Ready to Rock **
Despite a sketchy scouting report and a rules modification, world
heavyweight kickboxing champion Dennis Kaheke Alexio is still an
overwhelming favorite to defeat challenger Masaaki Miyamoto in a
United Title Commission title bout this Saturday at the Blaisdell
Arena. Alexio (62-1) said he knows little about his foe. "I
have 13 seconds of tape on him," he said. What's more, in order
to secure Miyamoto as an opponent, Alexio had to agree to a rules
modification whereby kicking would be limited to below-the-waist
blows. Accordingly, Alexio's devastating head kicks are removed
from his arsenal. "I don't like (the modified rules), but I'm
not unwilling," said Alexio, who says he still is attempting to
put together a deal to fight boxer Mike Tyson.

** Wahine Prepping for Title Run **
The University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team, ranked No. 1 in
the USA Today Top 25 preseason poll, will open their season in
the Women's Volleyball Classic on Aug. 23-24 in Illinois. The
Wahine were top-ranked and undefeated last season before losing a
stunning 5-game match to Michigan State in the NCAA West Regional
final at a soldout Special Events Arena. "I don't think any of
us will ever forget (the loss)," said UH coach Dave Shoji. "I
still remember looking up and seeing the fans crying in the
stands. That's what hurts most." The Wahine will undoubtedly
make a strong run for a national title with their entire starting
cast back except for graduated senior Jenny Wilton. "I think it
is understood that we want to go all the way this year," said
Shoji.
** Semones a Hit with Bows **
Former Kahuku High coach Doug Semones, well-liked and respected
by his Red Raider players, is being received equally as well by
the University of Hawaii football team, where he heads up the
special teams. "He makes you want to play hard," said linebacker
Branch Nautu. "He's the best," echoed linebacker Lesa Maiva, now
a Rainbow after a prep career under Semones at Kahuku. First-
year UH coach Fred vonAppen said he hired the affable Kahuku grid
boss because Semones "labored long, had success, and is a good
coach." Semones said he has regrets about leaving Kahuku before
unseating St. Louis for local prep football supremacy (the Red
Raiders lost to the Crusaders by one point in the 1995 Oahu Prep
Bowl). "You need to go on with life and take new challenges and
keep progressing and growing," said Semones of his decision to
accept the UH job.
** Maafala Making Big Impact **
Former St. Louis High School running back Chris Fuamatu-Maafala
is looking forward to his sophomore season at the University of
Utah after posting big numbers as a true freshman in 1995. A 6-
foot, 274-pounder, Fuamatu-Maafala darted and powered his way for
834 yards on 141 carries (5.9 ave.) for the Utes last season,
earning Western Athletic Conference freshman player of the year
honors. "I don't consider myself just a battering ram," said
the burly running back. "I first try to avoid tacklers, but if a
collision is the only option, then I go as hard as I can." UTEP
coach Charlie Bailey calls Fuamatu-Maafala "a big old bull" who
"is so strong he runs right through tacklers." Said Utah State
head coach John L. Smith: "He was bigger than any of our linemen
last year."
** Youth Baseball News **
It was a good day on the diamond for two local youth all-star
baseball teams. At the Little League Major Division (11-12-year-
olds) Western Regional at San Bernardino, Calif., Pearl City
edged Moorpark, Calif., 6-5, in eight innings to advance to the
regional championship game. Pearl City, the lone undefeated team
in the double-elimination tournament, needs just one more win to
earn a spot at the Little League World Series at Williamsport,
Penn.

At Taylor, Mich., Aiea routed Rhinestein, Germany, 14-0, in
opening round game of the Little League Junior (13-year-olds)

Punahou's Parker McLachlin, the 1995 Hawaii state high school

** Top Ranking for UH Wahine **
Armed with five returning starters, the University of Hawaii
Wahine been tabbed as the team to beat in this season's NCAA
volleyball wars by USA Today. Last season, Hawaii finished with
a 31-1 record, its only loss coming in the west regional final
against Michigan State. The Wahine, with All-Americans Angelica
Ljunquist (middle-blocker) and Robyn Ah Mow (setter) leading the
way, look to be even stronger than they were in 1995. "I'm very
optimistic because the nucleus is certainly there," said Hawaii
coach Dave Shoji, returning for his 22nd season. "If all the
players have the years they want, we'll be very tough." Outside
hitters Therese Crawford and Joselyn Robins, middle blocker Cia
Goods, and backrow specialist Nalani Yamashita also are back.
The Wahine, who broke several NCAA attendance records last
season, will compete in the Western Athletic Conference this year
after a ending a long run with the Big West Conference.
** UH Boot Camp Kicks Off **
"This is hell," claimed quarterback Glenn Freitas. "No, this is
hotter than hell," chimed in safety Gery Graham. The pair of
University of Hawaii players weren't describing the Mojave Desert
but the first-day conditions of the Barbers Point Naval Air
Station practice field where the Rainbow football team will be
holding two-a-day workouts for the next two weeks. Enthusiasm is
rampant, for head coach Fred vonAppen has declared that all
starting positions are up for grabs. "The only starters we have
are (former head coach) Bob's (Wagner's) starters," he said. The
Rainbows will host Boston College in their Aug. 31 season opener.
----
The Rainbows, already reeling because of the recent loss of a
dozen players due to academic deficiencies, received more bad
news when offensive lineman Hauoli Wong quit the team yesterday.
Wong, who started all 12 games as a redshirt freshman for the
'Bows in 1995, gave no reason for his departure.
** Sapolu to Play Center **
Former University of Hawaii and Farrington High School star Jesse
Sapolu will man the center position for the San Francisco 49ers
this season. Still recovering from a broken bone in his right
hand, Sapolu played both guard and center in 1995. Head coach
George Seifert had considered moving Sapolu permanently to guard
this season but relented when injuries thinned the offensive line
ranks.

** UH Woes Hit Mainland Newsstands **
The budget woes faced by Fred vonAppen and his University of
Hawaii football program have made the national news, appearing in
the Los Angeles Times and USA Today, among others. About a month
ago, vonAppen facetiously suggested that UH should hold "bake
sales" to make up for the thousands of dollars that had been
slashed from the football budget. Taking the coach's suggestion
to heart, some fans began inquiring about donations of cakes,
cookies, and pies. "I thought it was cute," said Associated
Press Hawaii bureau chief Gordon Sakamoto, who forwarded the
story to over 1,500 newspapers nationwide. LA Times columnist
Shav Glick made mention of UH's problem in his column, which is
included in other news organizations. VonAppen said he isn't
worried about taking heat from the UH brass because of "factual"
nature of the publicity. He said because of the story, some fans
have been "sending money, not ingredients."

unaesthetic" workout: "These are young guys who are clueless of
what we're trying to accomplish in terms of work tempo on the
field. This is one of those frustrating indoctrinations."
VonAppen announced that six former walk-ons had been put on

** Fourteen Football Bows Fall to Academic Axe **
Five projected starters for the University of Hawaii football
team were among the 14 players declared academically ineligible
for the upcoming season. "This is way too much," said a
perturbed UH head coach Fred vonAppen. "It's time for players to
'fess up to the responsibilities that there are consequences if
you don't take care of business." UH athletic director Hugh
Yoshida vowed to "look at the situation and see that we can get
it fixed." The casualties--
--linebacker Punahou Aina (Damien), who started all 12 games
last season and was the team's second leading tackler.
--defensive tackle Jerry Leano (Campbell), the 1992-93 state
high school player of the year.
--linebacker Peter Salavea (St. Louis), an all-state player
for the Crusaders who started three games for the Bows as
a true freshman in 1995.
--safety Falaniko Vitale (Waipahu), a former OIA defensive
player of the year and one of the 'Bows most feared
hitters.
--offensive lineman Marcus Malepeai (Kailua), a two-year
starter at guard for the Rainbows.

players to choose Hawaii over BYU in recent years.

cornerback Charles Towns, offensive lineman Mikaele
Liugalua, and defensive lineman Ben Iosefa.
--incoming freshmen Likaki Malaki (Calif.) and James Polk

** AJA Requirement Questioned **
Former University of Hawaii baseball player Bill Blanchette has
sought an inquiry about the legality of barring players not of
Japanese descent from playing in the Oahu AJA (Americans of
Japanese Ancestry) Baseball League. A star pitcher for the
Rainbows from 1990-92, Blanchette, of French-Canadian ancestry,
questioned the league's eligibility restrictions. "Is it legal
for any group using city facilities to discriminate on a racial
basis?" he asked. "I hope to God the answer is 'No.'"
Established at the turn of the century, the AJA league was
created to give local Japanese an opportunity to play baseball.
Thanks to a group of faithful proponents, it has sustained itself
over the years when many other ethnic-based leagues have folded.
Several league officials said they would retire if non-AJAs were
allowed to compete. The Hawaii Civil Rights Commission and the
local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union are exploring
the issue.

** Sanctions Possible for UH Volleyball **
Sanctions against the University of Hawaii men's volleyball team
may be meted out by the NCAA because of a flap involving two
Rainbow players. The names of UH starters Naveh Milo and Sivan
Leoni appeared in an ad for a volleyball clinic sponsored by the

name or picture may not be used in any way to directly advertise
or promote a camp." According to UH athletic official Kaia
Hedlund, Temple Emanu-El representatives submitted a written
proposal requesting permission for the two athletes to work at

** OCC Again? **
Despite a slow start this season, defending champion Outrigger
Canoe Club is the slight favorite to win the Hawaiian Canoe
Racing Association State Championship Regatta tomorrow at Keehi
Lagoon. Outrigger has won the state crown eleven times in the

last year." Pushing Outrigger will be Windward Oahu-based
Lanikai Canoe Club, an early season powerhouse whose might has

recovering from shoulder and ankle injuries sustained during the
recently-completed 15-day Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament. The 6-

** Coach V Speaks Out **
University of Hawaii football coach Fred vonAppen admitted that
he is "annoyed, disappointed, and chapped" about athletic
director Hugh Yoshida's decision to slash $50,000 from the
football budget. Said vonAppen: "I find it disturbing that we
made sweeping cuts in areas where we need to make sweeping
increases. If your flagship (sport) is football, it would be
ill-advised to cut back on football. We have to rally around
some of the revenue sports." Despite his frustration, vonAppen
remained upbeat about the coming season. "I've never been
discouraged," he said.

Members of the WAC media have tabbed the Rainbows to finish 6th

Alexio had to agree to Miyamoto's request that below-the-belt
blows would be allowed. After suffering a knee injury several
