** Sumo Day 9 Report **
Yokozuna Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), ozeki Musashimaru
(Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) and maegashira Kaio are tied for the
lead of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament with 8-1 records. Kaio
defeated Akebono yesterday while Musashimaru beat Kyokushuzan.
In other matches involving Hawaii sumotori, Konishiki (Nanakuli's
Salevaa Atisanoe) lost to Gojoro, and Yamato (Waimanalo's George
Kalima) defeated Aogiyama. Konishiki now stands at 2-7 and
Yamato at 5-4.
** UH Sports Round-Up **
The UH men's basketball team is in Las Vegas to take on UNLV in
an NIT Tournament second-round game at today at 5:30 p.m. (HST)
at the Thomas and Mack Center. "We feel like we're at home,"
said UH coach Riley Wallace, referring to the plethora of local
food and former-local people in Vegas. "But we have to realize
that we're in the middle of the desert." The Rainbows have
defeated the Rebels twice this season, both games settled in the
final minute.
----
The UH men's volleyball team swept a pair of matches from Lewis
University this weekend at the Special Events Arena. On Friday
night, the 11th-ranked Rainbows swept the 10th-ranked Flyers in
a surprisingly one-sided match. In the rematch on Saturday night,
a crowd of 5,781 saw a closer battle, the Rainbows prevailing in
four games, 15-9, 15-6, 9-15, 16-14. The victories upped
Hawaii's season mark to 11-7. Lewis dropped to 16-7.
----
The UH baseball team dropped to 6-22 on the season after losing
two of three games to New Mexico in Albuquerque this weekend. On
Friday, the Lobos outslugged the Rainbows for a 25-23 triumph.
The 48 runs scored in the game is a WAC record. The next day,
New Mexico scored eight runs in the second inning and cruised to
a 19-10 win. Yesterday, southpaw Dusty Bergman helped stave off
a Lobo sweep and end a nine-game UH losing streak by pitching
seven effective innings in a 16-8 Hawaii win. Neal Honma, Greg
Millichap, and Robert Medeiros each drove in three runs for the
Rainbows.
----
UH golf team member Regan Lee won the Hawaii State Amateur Stroke
Play Championship yesterday at the Pearl Country Club. Lee, a
senior for the Rainbows, fired a 2-under 70 for a three-round
total of 216, two better than runners-up Yukio Saiki and Larry
Stubblefield.
----
The UH Wahine defeated 17th-ranked California, 4-0, to capture
the championship of the four-team Bank of Hawaii Invitational
yesterday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Stephanie
Weise spaced out six hits in pitching the seven-inning distance.
She also had three hits. UH is now 21-12-1. Cal dropped to 16-
12. Southeast Missouri and Illinois State were also entered in
the tournament.

** Oceanic to Broadcast UH/UNLV Game **
Monday's second round National Invitational Tournament game
between Hawaii and UNLV will be broadcast live (5:30pm HST) by
Oceanic Cablevision, which tendered an undisclosed five-figure
sum to outbid KFVE for the television rights. The game will be
played at the Thomas and Mack Center in Vegas. Oceanic recently
withdrew its $1.2 million per year bid to televise UH sports
because of delays and red-tape. In another development, athletic
director Hugh Yoshida said he will make a strong push for UH to
host a tournament third-round game at the Special Events Arena
should the Rainbows defeat the Rebels. The Hawaii/UNLV winner
will take on either Pittsburgh or Arkansas.
** Sumo Day 6 Report **
Grand champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) and champion
Takanonami won yesterday to remain unbeaten after six days of the
Spring Grand Sumo Tournament being held at Osaka, Japan. Akebono
forced out Akinoshima (3-3), and in an earlier bout, Takanonami
defeated Kotoryu (1-5). Entering his match with a 5-0 mark,
champion Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) lost a share of
the lead after being upset by Kotonishiki (3-3). In other matches
involving rikishi from Hawaii, Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa
Atisanoe) beat Misugisato to improve to 1-5, and Yamato
(Waimanalo's George Kalima) dropped to 2-4 after losing to
Higonoumi.
** Sea Warriors Get Second Seed **
Saying he feels "very confident about this year's team," Hawaii
Pacific basketball coach Tony Sellitto likes the Sea Warriors'
chances of the winning a national title at next week's NAIA
National Championship Tournament at Tulsa, Oklahoma. Yesterday,
tournament officials gave the Sea Warriors (24-3) the second seed
and paired them with William Carey College of Mississippi (22-13)
in a first-round game next Wednesday (2:15pm HST). BYU-Hawaii
(20-7) is also entered in the tourney and will play Transylvania
College of Kentucky (23-7) next Tuesday (2:15pm HST).
** Tam Pushes for Trainer Funds **
State Senator Rod Tam will introduce a bill that will provide
funds to pay for certified athletic trainers at Hawaii public
high schools. Presently, 15 schools are staffed by part-time
trainers. If Tam's bill is passed, about $1.3 in funds,
currently earmarked for pay raises for state judges, will be used
to upgrade the part-timers to full-time status and to hire 25
additional trainers for other schools.

today and tomorrow.

Five Hawaii surfers advanced and one was upset in the second
round of the Billabong Pro at Kirra Point Australia. Moving into
the third round will be Shawn Sutton, Ross Williams, Kalani Robb,
Shane Dorian, and Kaipo Jaquias. The upset victim was Sunny
Garcia, who lost to Aussie Lee Winkler.

** 'Bows Win NIT Opener **
Saddled with a ten-point halftime deficit, Hawaii rallied in the
final 20 minutes to eliminate Oregon, 71-61, in a National
Invitational Tournament first-round game last night at the
Special Events Arena. A crowd of 9,184 watched the Rainbows'
inspired turnaround, which netted them a second round meeting
with UNLV--a 66-62 winner over Memphis last night--at the Thomas
and Mack Center in Vegas next Monday. "It'll just be another
challenge for us," said UH forward Micah Kroeger. And the
Rainbows faced a formidable challenge from the Ducks last night,
following behind 40-30 at the half as Oregon pounded the ball
inside. But after employing a paint-cluttering 2-3 zone and
picking up the tempo in the second half, Hawaii came, the guard
tandem of Alika Smith (23 points) and Anthony Carter (19 points,
11 assists) inflicting the biggest damage.
** Sumo Day 5 Report **
Three rikishi, two from Hawaii, share the lead of the Spring
Grand Sumo Tournament (Osaka, Japan) with 5-0 records. The two
local boys are yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono, also known as
Chad Rowan of Waimanalo, and ozeki (champion) Musashimaru
(Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani). Akebono defeated Tochiazuma, and
Musashimaru ousted Kenko (1-4). Ozeki Takanonami is also 5-0
while grand champion Takanohana is one of six wrestlers at 4-1.
Two other rikishi from Hawaii lost, Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa
Atisanoe) falling to 0-5 after being dropping a match to Rikio
(2-3), and Yamato (Waimanalo's George Kalima) slipping to 2-3
after a setback to Dejima (4-1).
** "Still time to turn things around," says Murakami **
Despite seeing his team get off to a dismal 5-20 start, UH
baseball coach Les Murakami says a turnaround is still possible
despite losing a dozen players, many of them potential starters,
because of injury or academics. "These kids are not giving up;
I'll tell you that," said the veteran Rainbow field boss who has
a 961-486-4 career record in 27 seasons at Manoa. "They work
very hard and that is bound to pay off eventually." And if a
turnaround is to begin, the Rainbows can start this weekend when
they travel to New Mexico for a three-game series against the
Lobos.

(12-3) are ranked first through fifth.

sweeping a doubleheader from Illinois State, 1-0 and 3-1,
yesterday afternoon at the Sea Warriors' windward campus field.

California's Kim Davenport won the Hawaii State 9-ball billiards
championship on Sunday at Hawaiian Brian's Billiards. Davenport,
who earned $2,500 for the triumph, defeated Hawaii's Rodney
Morris in the finals. Morris earned $1,800.
----
The sister and brother tandem of Catherine and Legrand Sakamaki
won titles at the National Junior Weightlifting Championships
this past weekend at Flagstaff, Ariz. Fifteen year old Katherine
won the girls' 106-pound class, snatching 116 pounds and jerking
143. Legrand, 19, triumphed in the 130-pound division with a
snatch of 231 and jerk of 292. Both were defending champions.

** Sumo Day 4 Report **
Wakanohana's bid for promotion to grand champion was dashed when
he sustained a hamstring injury on Tuesday night forcing him to
withdraw from the tournament. The winner of the New Year's Basho
with a 14-1 record, Wakanohana could have earned sumo's highest
rank of yokozuna with a tournament title or a similar record.
Meanwhile, two rikishi from Hawaii, yokozuna Akebono (Waimanalo's
Chad Rowan) and ozeki Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani)
both won yesterday to improve to 4-0. Another grand champion,
Takanohana, an upset victim of Kotonowaka, fell to 3-1. Also
losing were Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe), who is now
0-4, and Yamato (Waimanalo's George Kalima), who is 2-2.

BYU-Hawaii (20-7) was extended an at-large berth yesterday and
will join Hawaii Pacific (24-3) at the 32-team NAIA National
Basketball Championship Tournament set to begin on March 24 at
Tulsa, Okla. Last week, HPU earned an automatic bid by defeating
BYUH. Opening round matchups for the tournament will be
announced tomorrow. The teams also earned spots in last year's
tournament, and both were ousted in the second round.

** Big Crowd Expected for 'Bows NIT Opener **
Ticket sales were brisk yesterday for the UH men's basketball
team's National Invitational Tournament first-round contest
against Oregon tomorrow night (7:30 HST) at the Special Events
Arena. About 5,000 tickets were sold to season ticket holders
yesterday with the remaining 5,000 likely to be scooped up today
when seats are made available to the general public. Meanwhile,
UH coach Riley Wallace and his Rainbows (20-7) went to work
preparing for the 17-10 Ducks, the owners of victories over UCLA,

Pac-10 Conference, is Oregon's top player.
** Wallace Says Aloha **
UH Wahine volleyball associate head coach Howard Wallace will be
Nebraska-bound after accepting the head coaching job for
Creighton University's women's team. Wallace, a Kailua High grad
and a full-time assistant at UH since 1990, signed a three-year
contract with Creighton for an undisclosed amount. "I'll miss the
feeling of ohana, the spirit of aloha, and the great local food,"
said Wallace. UH coach Dave Shoji called Wallace's departure "a
great loss to both me and the program." Shoji announced that
current assistant Charlie Wade would be promoted to associate
head coach and that a nationwide search for a full-time assistant
would commence immediately.

** Tourney News Bitter-Sweet for UH **
The UH men's basketball team, snubbed by the NCAA yesterday,
accepted a bid to play in the National Invitational Tournament
instead. The Rainbows (20-7) will host Oregon (17-10) in a
first-round game on Wednesday night at the Special Events Arena.
Meanwhile, the UH Wahine basketball team, the owners of a 21-8
record, also failed to earn a berth in the Women's NCAA Tourney.
UH coach Vince Goo expressed disappointment that only two WAC
teams, San Diego State and Utah, earned berths in the Big Dance.
** 'Bows Swept Away **

distance for Utah (14-8-1 overall, 5-1 WAC), yielding eight hits
and striking out five. Meanwhile, Ute batters roughed up Rainbow
starter Jay Spurgeon for eight runs in the four and a third
innings he worked. Tracy Nakano had three hits and Neal Honma
two for the Rainbows (5-20, 0-6).

** Bleak Day for UH **
Yesterday was not a good one for University of Hawaii athletics
as three Rainbow teams fell to defeat. Na Wahine basketball team
was routed by San Diego State, 74-48, in a WAC Tournament
semifinal game at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. The
loss doused any hopes the team had of earning a berth in the
upcoming NCAA Tournament. Unless a miracle occurs, the Wahine
will end their season at 21-8. Also falling were the UH men's
volleyball team (8-7), a five-game loser to Cal State-Northridge
at the Special Events Arena, and the baseball 'Bows (5-18), who
dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Utah last night at Rainbow
Stadium. The men's basketball team hopes to bring a bit of
brightness back to UH sports by landing an NCAA Tournament bid
tomorrow. The Rainbows (20-7), decided longshots for the Big
Dance, are more likely to receive a berth in the National
Invitational Tournament (NIT).
** Sapolu Won't Retire Yet **
A faulty heart valve, since repaired, won't be enough to keep
veteran pro football player Jesse Sapolu on the sidelines for
good. Sapolu, a former Farrington High and University of Hawaii
standout, says he'll try to hook up with another NFL team after
being waived by the San Francisco 49ers. He underwent successful
open-heart surgery in January to repair a leaking aortic valve,
and doctors recently gave him the go-ahead to play football
again. The 35-year-old offensive lineman, a veteran of four 49er
Super Bowl championship squads, is in the process of fielding
offers from several NFL teams.
** Osaka Tourney on Tap **
Ozeki (champion) Wakanohana will make a bid to become the 66th
yokozuna in recorded history at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament
set to begin tonight at Osaka, Japan. Wakanohana, whose younger
brother Takanohana is already a grand champion, could earn
promotion to the sport's highest rank by winning the Spring
Tournament or finishing with a record of 14-1. He won the New
Year's Tournament with a 14-1 mark. Hoping to stifle Waka's bid
will be two rikishi from Hawaii, grand champion Akebono
(Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) and champion Musashimaru (Waianae's
Fiamalu Penitani). Both finished at 12-3 at the last tournament.
Another wrestler with Hawaii ties, No. 10 maegashira Konishiki
(Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe), will sit out the tournament
because of a viral infection.

butterfly, the 100 freestyle, and anchoring two relays.

** Lobos Bury 'Bows **
The UH basketball 'Bows must hope for a friendly nod from the
basketball gods after being eliminated from the Western Athletic
Conference Tournament, 65-57, by 14th-ranked New Mexico last
night at the Thomas and Mack Arena in Las Vegas. Despite the
loss, the Rainbows (20-7), the owners of a No. 40 power ranking
entering the game, are deserving of a bid to the NCAA Tournament,
according to WAC commissioner Karl Benson and New Mexico coach
Dave Bliss. Said UH coach Riley Wallace: "I told (the players)
to get on their knees and pray. That's what's left for us."
Hawaii could have eliminated any conjecture by defeating the
Lobos (24-6) last night, but the inside play of Clayton Shields
(18 points, 14 rebounds) and Kenny Thomas (12 points, 10
rebounds) proved to be more than the outmanned Rainbows could
deal with. Alika Smith led UH with 19 points while Anthony
Carter added 16. NCAA tournament bids will be announced on
Sunday.
** Wahine in Semis Today **
This morning (10:30 HST), the UH Wahine basketball team (21-7)
will take on San Diego State in a WAC Women's Tournament
semifinal game at Thomas and Mack. The winner will advance to
the tournament title game and probably earn an NCAA Tourney berth
no what the result. The loser probably won't play again this
season. Na Wahine defeated the Aztecs at the Special Events
Arena in January. Since then, SDSU has not lost in 1997 and came
back to down UH in San Diego two weeks ago.
** Sea Warriors Tourney Bound **
Llewellyn Smalley poured in 28 points and Steve Richey and
Juergen Malbeck added 21 and 17 apiece to lead Hawaii Pacific to
an 82-67 men's small college basketball victory over BYU-Hawaii
last night at Blaisdell Arena. The win clinched a berth in the
NAIA National Tournament for the Sea Warriors (24-3). BYUH
(20-7), ranked 17th in this week's NAIA Top 25 Poll, must hope
for an at-large berth in the 32-team tournament.
** Volleyball 'Bows Play Tonight **
The UH men's volleyball team (8-6) will play Cal State-Northridge
(6-7) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match tonight at
the Special Events Arena. Kahinu Lee, a 6-foot junior out of
Konawaena High, will start at setter for the Rainbows, a move
that UH coach Mike Wilton said was needed "to pick things up."
Lee replaces Kurt Vaughn.

** Na Wahine Cook Rice **
Raylene Howard hit a clutch three-pointer with under a minute to
go to lift the UH Wahine past Rice, 57-54, in a Western Athletic
Conference Tournament quarterfinal game yesterday afternoon at
the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. Howard, the Pacific
Division Freshman of the Year, was also a demon on the boards,
snaring 15 caroms. Center Kendis Leeburg, a 6-2 senior, led Na
Wahine in scoring with 21. Howard added 13 and Brandi Ashby 11.
Next up for Hawaii (21-7) is a semifinal showdown tomorrow
morning (10:30 HST) with San Diego State. The teams split a pair
of games this season.
** 'Bows, Lobos Tonight **
While the UH Wahine have today off, the UH men's basketball team
will take to the hardwood for a quarterfinal match-up against No.
13 New Mexico tonight (7:00 HST) at Thomas and Mack. UH coach
Riley Wallace said a victory against the Lobos could assure his
team a berth in the NCAA Tournament. A loss would mean the 'Bows
could be headed to the NIT.
** Seasiders' Wagner Provo-Bound? **
BYU-Hawaii basketball coach Ken Wagner is reportedly the front-
runner for the head coach position at Brigham Young University in
Provo, according to a news story yesterday in the Salt Lake City
Tribune. Wagner said he didn't "know anything about it. At this
point, it's all rumors." Wagner has coached the Seasiders for
the past seven seasons, compiling a 145-70 record in that span.
Meanwhile, Wagner and his BYUH team (20-6) will take on Hawaii
Pacific (23-3) in local small college basketball's version of the
"Big Game" tonight at Blaisdell Arena. The winner will earn an
automatic berth in the March 18-24 NAIA National Championship
Tournament at Tulsa, Okla. The loser will have to hope for an
at-large berth.

** UH Sports Report **
The UH Wahine basketball team (20-7) tackles Rice (16-10) this
morning (10:30 HST) at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas in
a Western Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal match-up.
The game will be broadcast live back to the Islands on KFVE-
Channel 5 TV and KCCN-AM radio. The Owls, an athletic team that
likes an up-tempo game, have been inconsistent this year.
----
The UH men's basketball team will play New Mexico in a WAC
Tournament quarterfinal game tomorrow night at Thomas and Mack.
The 'Bows, 1-1 against the Lobos this season, received word that
they are a lock for the 32-team NIT Tournament but their sights
are much higher. "We're thinking about the four-letter word
(NCAA), not the three-letter word (NIT)," said guard Alika Smith.
Hawaii is considered an on-the-bubble team for the Big Dance.
** Small College News **
Hawaii Pacific (23-3) is ranked third and BYU-Hawaii (20-6) 17th
in the latest NAIA Men's Basketball Top 25 Poll. Two other
Hawaii teams, UH-Hilo and Chaminade, are 11-16 and 8-19,
respectively.

** Wahine Frazzle Frogs **
A summer workout regimen that included up to 800 three-pointers a
day paid off for University of Hawaii point guard BJ Itoman
yesterday, as she hit a couple big shots beyond the arc coming
out of halftime to lead Na Wahine over Texas Christian, 67-52, in
a first round game of the WAC Women's Basketball Tournament at
Thomas and Mack Arena in Las Vegas. "Huge...huge, her shooting
to start the second half," said TCU coach Mike Peterson. Itoman
hit 3 of 4 three-pointers early in the second half to help the
Wahine pull away after a 22-all halftime score. Itoman's
shooting forced TCU out of its zone defense which opened up the
interior for center Kendis Leeburg (24 points). Hawaii (20-7)
advances to a quarterfinal match-up against a cat-quick Rice team
tomorrow morning (10:30 HST). UH coach Vince Goo will seek his
200th career victory in that game.
** UH Men Ready to Rock on Thursday **
While the WAC women have the day off, the conference's men's team
take to the hardwood at the Thomas and Mack Center for first
round games today. The UH men have earned a first-round bye as a
result of finishing second in the Pacific Division. On Thursday
(7 p.m. HST), they will take on the winner of today's San Jose
State-New Mexico game. Hawaii received a bit of good news
yesterday when shooting guard Quentin Gallon was re-instated
after serving a month-long suspension for violation of team
rules. Gallon, one of the team's best perimeter shooters, will
help add depth at the guard position, said UH coach Riley
Wallace. Two other players, guard Aaron Curry and forward Kelvin
Anderson, remain on suspension until they fulfill undisclosed
requirements.

streak for the Wahine. Kendis Leeburg scored 16 points and Nani
Cockett added 12 for Hawaii (19-7 overall and 12-4 WAC). UH coach
Vince Goo described his team as "tough kids" after overcoming the
large crowd (8,893 in attendance) and high altitude (5,000-plus-

** Bulldogs Bash 'Bows **
Fresno State ripped Hawaii, 98-80, in a big Western Athletic
Conference basketball showdown last night at the Special Events
Arena. The Bulldogs used an aggressive man-to-man defense and
the three-point bombs of sophomore guard Chris Herren (career-
high 35 points) to subdue the Rainbows and a sellout crowd of
10,225. Hawaii jumped out to an 11-0 lead but FSU clawed back,
its pressure defense and the hot shooting of Herren and Rahsaan
Smith (20 points on 9 of 13 field goals) too much for the 'Bows
to overcome. Alika Smith led UH with 23 points. Anthony Carter,
tagged with his fourth foul early in the second half, was limited
to 12 points. A victory would have clinched the Pacific Division
title for Hawaii. Now FSU, UNLV, and UH are tied for the
division lead at 11-4 with one game to play in the regular
season. Should all three win tomorrow--UNLV travels to Colorado
State, FSU visits San Diego State, and the Rainbows host San Jose
State--all will be declared co-champions with FSU earning the No.
1 seed in next week's conference tournament by virtue of its
sweep of the Rainbows and split with UNLV.

A sellout crowd of over 10,000 will be on hand to watch the
University of Hawaii tangle with Jerry Tarkanian-coached Fresno
State in a critical Western Athletic Conference men's basketball
game tomorrow night at the Special Events Arena. A victory by

** 'Bows Deserve NCAA Bid, says WAC Honcho **
Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson said the UH
men's basketball team is more than worthy of a berth in the
upcoming 64-team NCAA Tournament. Benson said the Rainbows'
strong finish (Hawaii has won 10 of its last 12 games), solid
schedule (an all Division 1 schedule and an 8-2 record against
non-conference foes), and strong power ranking (No. 36 of 305
Division 1 schools) makes them a deserving candidate. "Hawaii
has done everything the NCAA has asked," said Benson. "I'd be
very disappointed if they didn't get picked." At the moment, the
Rainbows still control their own fate and can gain an automatic
berth by winning the WAC Tournament. The Rainbows can clinch the
WAC's Pacific Division title and a top seed in the conference

Following a quarterfinal triumph last night, Hilo will join three
Oahu teams in the semifinals of the Hawaii High School Boys'

Hilo.
** High School Soccer State Tournament **
Iolani, Castle, Waiakea, and Punahou advanced to the semifinal
round of the Hawaii High School Boys' State Soccer Tournament
with wins last night at Aloha Stadium. The top-seeded Raiders
beat Kahuku, 4-1; Castle edged Mililani, 1-0; Waiakea nipped

** Klinker Books **
UH offensive line coach Walt Klinker turned in his walking papers
yesterday to accept an identical position at the University of
Kansas. Klinker, who had worked at UH for a year, becomes the
third member of head coach Fred vonAppen's staff to leave since
the end of last season. DB coach Trent Miles left to accept a
job at Fresno State and receiver coach Ken Margerum departed to
become the new head coach at Menlo College. VonAppen received
more bad news yesterday when North Texas State said it will be
pulling out of its Nov. 8 game against the Rainbows at Aloha
Stadium for undisclosed reasons. UH associate athletic director
Jim Donovan said he will search for a foe to replace NTS. If he
is unsuccessful, UH stands to lose as much as $300,000 in gate
revenue.
** Wahine Hoopsters Fall **
The UH Wahine basketball team lost its second straight game,
falling to San Diego State, 58-53, in a Western Athletic
Conference game last night at San Diego. "It's a very
disappointing loss," said UH forward Nani Cockett (23 points, 6
rebounds). "We were absolutely heartless in the first half" (Na
Wahine trailed 31-23 at halftime). The Aztecs lead the WAC's
Pacific Division with a 14-1 record. Hawaii and Colorado State
are tied for second at 11-3. UH returns home to conclude its

** 'Bows Beat SDSU **
Awakening after a 33-32 halftime deficit, Hawaii rallied past San
Diego State in a Western Athletic Conference men's basketball
game last night at the Special Events Arena. A crowd of 6,707
watched the Rainbows improve to 19-4 overall, 11-2 in the
conference, and move within a game of clinching their first-ever
WAC division title. After seeing his team hammered inside by the
Aztecs in the first half, UH coach Riley Wallace ordered the
Rainbows to employ a paint-clogging 1-2-2 zone that effectively
stifled the SDSU interior attack. "We didn't give any easy ones
after that," said Wallace. On the offensive end, four 'Bows
scored in double figures, including Alika Smith (21), Anthony
Carter (15), Micah Kroeger (13) and Michael Robinson (12).
** High School Basketball State Tournament **
With the threat of a strike by the public school teachers
looming, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Boys'
Basketball Tournament got underway last night at two school
sites. Winning last night and advancing to tonight's
quarterfinals at Blaisdell Arena were Moanalua, Waiakea, Aiea,
and Seabury Hall. Na Menehune, the defending state champions,
overcame a 15-point third quarter deficit to defeat Punahou,
64-56, at McCabe Gym. Earlier at McCabe, Waiakea edged Kaiser,
40-37. Over at Moanalua High, Aiea tipped Kapaa, 58-55, and
Seabury Hall crushed Waipahu, 59-35. The tournament's four
seeded teams begin play tonight with the following matchups:
Hilo vs Seabury Hall, Iolani vs Aiea, Kalaheo vs Waiakea, and
Baldwin vs Moanalua. Most of the coaches of the public school
teams are teachers and would have had to sit out the remainder of
the tournament if a teachers' strike had begun today.
Fortunately, teachers' union representatives and state officials
reached a tentative agreement early this morning to avoid a
walkout.
** High School Soccer State Tournament **
Four Oahu teams won first round games at the Hawaii High School
Athletic Association boys' soccer tournament at Aloha Stadium
yesterday. Kahuku beat Kapaa in overtime, 3-2, Castle edged
Hawaii Prep Academy, 2-1, Kalaheo topped Hilo, 1-0, and Punahou
shut out Kaiser, 3-0. In quarterfinal matches tonight, also at
Aloha Stadium, Iolani will take on Kahuku, Waiakea will meet
Kalaheo, St. Anthony will challenge Punahou, and Mililani will
square off against Castle.
** Sports Shorts **
The UH Wahine basketball team (18-5 overall and 11-2 WAC) will
take on San Diego State (18-6, 13-1) tonight at San Diego. Na
Wahine are battling for one of the top two spots in the Pacific
Division which would net them a first round bye in the
conference's postseason tournament.
----
The UH men's volleyball team (5-4 overall, 3-3 Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation) will look to put an end to a three-match
losing streak when it takes on San Diego State (0-9, 0-7)
tomorrow night and Saturday at the Special Events Arena.
----
Also playing tomorrow and Saturday will be the struggling UH
baseball team (4-12), which will square off against cross-state
cousin UH-Hilo (7-12-1) at Rainbow Stadium. The Rainbows hold a
74-10 series advantage but the Vulcans have won three of the last
five meetings.

Miller, Amanda Borden, and Jaycie Phelps, will take part in the

** 'Bows Face Aztecs Tonight **
With a WAC title looming, the UH men's basketball team will host
San Diego State tonight at the Special Events Arena. With four
games remaining--three at home--the Rainbows (18-4 overall, 10-2
WAC) lead the league's Pacific Division by two games over UNLV
and Fresno State, both 8-4 in the WAC. Tonight's foe, SDSU (12-
11 and 4-9), is in the WAC's lower echelon this season.
** State Tourneys to Fly **
With a strike by Hawaii public school teachers scheduled to
commence tomorrow, Hawaii High School Athletic Association honcho
Dwight Toyama said the two state tournaments on tap this week
will go on unless an order to cease and desist comes from
Governor Ben Cayetano or public school chief Herman Aizawa. The
tournaments--for boys' basketball and boys' soccer--begin today
with first round games. If the strike occurs, whether those
coaches who are also public school teachers will continue to lead
their teams remains in question. All five coaches from the OIA
teams entered in the basketball tournament are teachers.

champion.
** High School Wrestling **
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu wrestling championships
will be held Saturday at Punahou Gym. Iolani, the nine-time
defending champion, will be hard-pressed to repeat because of
strong competition from Kamehameha, which defeated the Raiders
twice in dual meets this season. Meanwhile, the OIA
championships are also on tap this weekend. The tournament will
be held Friday and Saturday at the Cannon Activities Center on
the BYU-Hawaii campus. East champion McKinley and West kingpin
Aiea are the favorites to rule the roost. Kahuku, Moanalua, and
Kalaheo are also contenders.
** HPU Baseball **
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team improved to 8-7 after edging
Concordia, 8-7, yesterday at Irvine, Calif. Walter Grilho's

** English New UH Offensive Boss **
Wally English, who coached Dan Marino, Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon
in college, was named the new offensive coordinator for the
University of Hawaii football team yesterday. He replaces Guy
Benjamin, who remains on staff as the coordinator of academics
and quarterback coach. English said the 'Bows will run a pass-
oriented pro-style offense very similar to the highly-touted West
Coast Offense. His career has included stints with eight college,
three NFL, and four European teams. "Change is inevitable," said
UH head coach Fred vonAppen. "It's a constant in this business."
** GAR Wins for Bekele, Fisher **
Tesfaye Bekele and Sylvia Fisher captured men's and women's
first-to-finish honors at yesterday's 13th Great Aloha Run that
began near Aloha Tower and finished at Aloha Stadium. Bekele,
26, a professional runner from Ethiopia, was the first across the
line in a non-record time of 40 minutes, 6 seconds for the 8.25-
mile course. Rex Wilson of New Zealand set the record of 39:08
in 1987. Fisher, 37, who runs for Hawaii Pacific University, was
the first wahine finisher, striding across the line in 48:22. An
estimated 22,000 runners lined up at the start yesterday morning.
** WAC POW Honors for Freak **
Former Kalaheo star Alika Smith, nicknamed "Freak" by his UH
basketball teammates because of his unorthodox moves, was
selected as the Western Athletic Conference player of the week
yesterday. Smith, a 6-2 junior guard and the son of Kalaheo
coach Pete Smith, averaged 26.5 points in the Rainbows' road
victories over Wyoming and Colorado State last week. "I couldn't
have done it without the other four guys on the court, especially
A.C. (Anthony Carter). He's helped me out a lot." Smith and his
Rainbow teammates are ranked 30th in the Associated Press
National Poll released yesterday.

Hawaii accentuated its claim that it is a contender and not
pretender by defeating Colorado State, 83-79, in a Western
Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday night at Fort
Collins, Colo. Alika Smith scored a career-high 30 points and
Anthony Carter added 23 points and 11 assists to spark the
Rainbows (18-4 overall, 10-2 WAC), who lead the WAC Pacific
Division by a game and a half. The Rainbows have four conference
games remaining, three at home. The victory notched a sweep of
the two-game roadtrip to Wyoming and Colorado, the first time in
coach Riley Wallace's 10-year tenure as head coach that the 'Bows
have accomplished the feat. "I know how tough it is," said
Wallace. "But these players don't believe that. They think they
can win every game." CSU dropped to 17-7 and 7-5.
** Wahine Fall **
While the Rainbow men celebrated, Na Wahine basketball team lost
a tough 71-64 decision to Colorado State on Saturday at the

second-half free kick past the Kamehameha goalie for the only
score of the night to give the Chargers their fourth state title
of the 90s. Kamehameha was the two-time defending state
champion. Over at Roosevelt Stadium, Kailua, behind the fireball
pitching of Pomai Kapule, won its third straight softball state

Todd Chesser, 28, a renowned big wave rider, died yesterday after
being inundated by a roller estimated at 25-feet at a surf spot

"Absolutely shocking" is how Jack Shipley, a judge at Hawaii's
professional surfing competitions, described news of Chesser's
death. "He was as fit as anyone out there. He wasn't out of his
element." Chesser apparently lost consciousness after being
forced underwater by first one then another huge wave. Efforts
to revive him in the water and onshore were unsuccessful.

** 'Bows Survive Bus Crash **
"Damn lucky," is how UH basketball coach Riley Wallace described
the fortunes of himself and his team after the bus they were
riding crashed on an icy I-25 interstate roadway enroute from
Denver to Laramie, Wyoming early yesterday morning. "It could
have been worse," said Wallace. "We could be talking deaths if
the bus turned over." Apparently, the bus was zipping along the
iced-over interstate in excess of 70 miles per hour when it rear-
ended a slow-moving compact car and went skidding into roadside
brush, coming to a rest a few feet from a telephone pole. "It
was like the movie, 'Speed,'" said UH forward Micah Kroeger. "I
thought Sandra Bullock was driving." Members of the UH team were
shaken but unhurt. Wallace, who was sitting in the first row of
the bus, suffered a badly bruised right knee. The Rainbows
(16-4) are scheduled to play Wyoming (10-11) tonight at the Cow
Palace.

least a week but may be able to return to action in a few weeks.
Sundberg said that an 80 percent chance exists that he won't have

operation was necessary. Meanwhile, Sundberg's UH teammates must
take to the road for games against Wyoming tomorrow night and
Colorado State on Saturday. "Any time you lose a 7-footer who's

lacerated spleen, an injury sustained in Saturday's game against
Air Force. "It's devastating," said UH assistant coach Jackson
Wheeler. "He's worked so hard through so much. It's really
upsetting." At the very least, the 7-foot-2 Sundberg will miss
an indefinite period of time while the injury heals. And if an
operation is required, he'll miss the remainder of the season.
"I feel bad for him," said teammate Micah Kroeger. "It's his
senior year and we're doing well. We're going to miss his
leadership." The Rainbows, tied for the WAC's Pacific Division
lead, take to road for games against Wyoming on Thursday and

KIF SPORT NEWS --via Valentine Garcia
The Kapaa boys basketball team won the KIF title this weekend with
a 71-48 victory over Waimea. They had four players in double figures
with Kawaihau Torio leading the way with 12 points. Dusty Miller had 11,
Sophomore Nick Hill threw down 10 and Freshman Enoch McKeague also
had 10. The Kapaa Warriors are 7-0 in the KIF and 13-3 overall. They
have one more game against Kauai High; then they are off to the state
tournament. Their goal is to win the first game in the state
tournament. No KIF team has won a first round game in decades.
The Kapaa boys soccer team won a tough game against Kauai High this
weekend. They won 2-0 with goals from John Lopez and Cy Tamura. They
were assisted by Nick Hill and Matt Tinder. The win gives Kapaa the KIF
championship and the right to go to the state tournament. Kapaa got
slammed last time they went to Oahu. In the Iolani tournament
they went 1-4. But the Kapaa team has improved greatly with the return
of their defensive star Jason Nomi.
The Kapaa girls soccer team also won the KIF title with a dissapointing
5-1 win. Why is it dissapointing? Well, that was only the second goal
scored on them in the past 2 years. But to defend the Warriors they were
missing their starting sweeper Moana McReynolds for the game and they
had their backup goalie in the game when the goal was scored. Freshman
Arlene Devitt had a hat trick and an assist, while Andrea Alflier had a
couple of assists and kept the midfield in check. The Warriors are
leaving for the state tournament on Wednesday and they should represent
the island of Kauai very well.
