The UH linebacker corps is thinned by injuries going into tomorrow's game
against Cal State-Northridge at Aloha Stadium. Starters Rinda Brooks
(strained abdominal muscle) and Rufus Ayeni (sprained knee) aren't
expected to play. Also hobbled are backups Punahou Aina (hamstring pull)
and Mark Mollner (shin splints). "They're dropping like horse turd," said
UH coach Fred vonAppen.
----
The UH basketball team will make at least four appearances on ESPN in the
coming season, the most ever for a Rainbow squad. What's more, if Hawaii
wins an opening round game of the Rainbow Classic, it will appear twice
more on ESPN since semifinal, third-place, and championship games of
the tourney will be televised. In the bank are home games against TCU
(1/17), Fresno State (2/2), and Tulsa (2/21), and a road game on 2/12
against TCU.
----
Today's HON ADV feature former UH pitcher Matt Apana, 26, now a
member of the Memphis Chicks of the Class AA Southern League. Apana, a
graduate of Roosevelt, is in his fifth season of pro ball, having risen as
high as the Triple A ranks in 1995 before being waylaid by injuries.
"It's been a rollercoaster ride," he said. "I'm going to have to be
patient." He is 3-9 with a 5.82 ERA for Memphis this season.
----
The UH Wahine (3-0) will face a formidable foe in North Carolina tonight
in a first round game of the Wahine Volleyball Classic at the Special
Events Arena. The Tar Heels (4-0) return five starters from a team that
finished 20-12 in 1996. Punahou graduate Erin Berg is the starting center
for UNC. UCLA (0-0) will meet Houston (2-1) in another opening round
match of the round robin tournament.
----
Despite losing its coach and its top running back, Waiakea is favored to
win its fourth consecutive Big Island Interscholastic Federation football
title. Gone are head coach Tim Lino (to the DOE administration) and
running back Ernie Shin (to concentrate on baseball). Back are 10
starters along with talented St. Louis transfer Moki Kaulolo, who scored
three touchdowns in a 43-14 preseason triumph over Moanalua. Honokaa and
Hawaii Prep are expected to give the Warriors their toughest tests.

Defensive back Eddie Klaneski and center Shane Oliveira were extended
early invitations to play in next January's Hula Bowl All-Star game at
War Memorial Stadium on Maui. The duo are key players on the revitalized
UH football team that will take on Cal State-Northridge this Saturday at
Aloha Stadium. Both teams are 1-0.
----
The UH Wahine (3-0) will host Houston, North Carolina, and UCLA in the
Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic that begins tomorrow at the
Special Events Arena with two matches. Hawaii will take on North Carolina
and UCLA will meet Houston in the opening round of the round robin
tourney.
----
Today's HON ADV featured UH strength coach Phil Frye, who is credited with
helping members of the Rainbow football team improve their athletic
talents. Said offensive coordinator Wally English, "I've never seen a guy
that had a better running and conditioning program." Offensive lineman
Adrian Klemm, who gained 30 pounds of muscle with Frye's help, said, "He
makes us want to work." Frye worked at UCLA for eight years before
joining UH two years ago.
----
Not surprisingly, St. Louis is the team to beat in ILH football this
season. The Crusaders, ranked fifth in a national prep poll and first in
the HON ADV Hawaii High School Top 10, have won the last 11 ILH crowns.
Four returning all-staters lead the Saints--quarterback Jason Gesser,
defensive lineman Tony Tata, linebacker Fabian Manumaleuna, and safety
Geste Ornellas. Kamehameha, Iolani, Punahou, Pac-Five, and Damien--which
amassed a combined 8-2 record in preseason--all have the talent to knock
off one another. Will St. Louis fall from power this season? Not likely.

Governor Ben Cayetano accused UH coach Fred vonAppen of undermining the
support for the Rainbow football program by his less than hospitable
actions. Cayetano said that vonAppen's constant criticism of the lack of
support the program is receiving is not being taken well by fans. "He has
to understand that he needs the support of the guy on the street," said
Cayetano, who also voiced his displeasure that vonAppen failed to attend a
banquet in honor of UH boosters who contributed funds to the program.

The BYU-Hawaii women's volleyball team, 30-1 in 1996, will seek its fourth
consecutive NAIA National title this season with a revamped but
potentially potent lineup. Gone are four potential senior starters--two
are serving Mormon missions-- but replacing them will be some talented
freshmen from Brazil. Hawaii Pacific (17-10) will field a smallish but
talented team; Chaminade is coming off its best season (21-9) in school
history; and UH-Hilo is coming off its worst (7-21).
