China's "Tanzanian Beer for Taxes"

Tanzania sells beer to make up for tax loss DAR ES SALAAM, Jan 6 (Reuter) - Tanzania will auction nearly eight million confiscated cans of imported beer valued at $5 million, the treasury said on Friday. The treasury said it had won a court order to auction 330,000 cases, part of 160 shipping containers of beer seized by customs agents, to pay taxes owed by the company Traders Merchant Vintners. It said treasury officials were questioning the company's owners over a further $20 million in unpaid taxes since 1992. The beer was seized as part of a government campaign against tax evasion.
