HISTORY! This is it, your chance to make political and economic history in Hawaii. How? By voting the best team to effectuate change: Linda Lingle and Stan Koki. Despite the global and Asian problems, we can control our own destiny at home with the right leadership. If you ever wanted to exercise your clout, this is it. Change is in the air, not just in vending machines. What can one person do? Plenty, when it is the right person and when other people of good will come forward to help. That is the opportunity now.

Those who watched the Lingle-Cayetano television debates were struck with how knowledgeable the Maui Mayor is and how the 24-year political veteran incumbent Governor should be looking for other career options. It is the same at community rallies: the monopoly party candidates scream and threaten while those supporting Lingle and other Republicans are confident, hopeful and cheerful. You can't orchestrate that or spin it. It's for real.

When the power changes in Hawaii, out of touch and arrogant union bosses will be the big losers-union members and families will be big winners. They will have shown their confidence in change and the ability to separate truth from threat. Many union members have been frustrated because their suggested changes have gone unheeded and their morale lessened by inaction on the part of their union domos to address problems of substance abuse and violations in the workplace. Under a new Administration, they will have pride and recognition for performance and a place to go with those positive suggestions long ignored. Look for the unified label.

Congrats to Rob Perez and The Honolulu Star-Bulletin for an excellent and enlightening four-part series on union power in Hawaii.

The "Hawaii Coalition of Small Business Owners" put out good material and tough questions for the candidates to answer. Was Fred Hemmings involved in this effort??

Only in Hawaii: a scam artist on the Big Island who sold people laulau which was really just fish heads wrapped up. (Yuck!) J. Akuhead Pupule must be rolling in his radio grave.

Frank Fasi couldn't keep his word, or stop from being what he has always been: Hawaii's consummate politician. His campaigning openly for the Governor after an oft-repeated promise to support the Party nominee after the Primary is par for the course. Many of the good things he did over the decades as Honolulu Mayor will pale by comparison to his latest political perfidy.

Hawaii's past "governor," Philip Grey - Hawaii 5-0 actor Richard Denning - died last month at age 84. Book 'em, Linda!

With up to 10% of the Honolulu Police Department opting to move and take higher paying jobs in Seattle, Las Vegas and Portland, local residents may now have to dial 1-800-911 for a cop. Maybe we should take better care of our local law enforcement personnel and respect them for the many sacrifices they make for us. Could recruitment of local teachers be next??

Speaking of 1-800 numbers, more "local businesses" continue to outsource Hawaii services elsewhere and it is harder to resolve local problems. AAA Hawaii, now owned by the California Auto Club, used to issue renewal membership cards immediately; now it takes 4-8 weeks from California.

When political and economic change does come to Hawaii, a number of big businesses and banks will have to learn how to compete for the favors of consumers and not politicos.

Is it just me, or are there more water faucets being put in public places with a reverse (clockwise "on" and counter-clockwise "off" ) configuration?

Singer Jimmy Buffet here suing local Maui and Waikiki restaurants, "Cheeseburger in Paradise" for allegedly cockroaching his lyrics in their firm name. Hold the mayo.

Hooray! Iron Mike Tyson has been allowed to return to boxing. Like Bill Clinton, he "has suffered enough." But, he could give new meaning to the term, "...lend me your ears."

Dirty tricks? Former Judge Walter Heen, (who never smiles) now head of the Hawaii Democrat Party, amazed everyone with his uncanny ability to identify excrement allegedly smeared on the party's Kaka'ako location office window as, coming from "Republicans." Heen said, Greens and Libertarians "wouldn't do such a thing." Neither would any of many street people in the area, Judge. (One GOP wag however said that the Republicans had taken so much excrement from Demos over the decades that they were just returning it).

Meanwhile, former Hawaii Democrat Congressman Cec Heftel returned from Las Vegas to visit. He reviewed the dirty tricks and smears on him by his own party in his 1986 race against John Waihee for Governor. Interestingly, the local media almost totally ignored his remarks before the Honolulu Rotary.

The debates are over, you've heard and read the rhetoric. You CAN fight City Hall-and win. VOTE TUESDAY, November 3 in the General Election. Vote with your Kids! Your vote will make a difference. In your heart, you know what must be done to help turn Hawaii around. Just do it! You have a wide choice of candidates, including many more business-experienced men and women. Vote as if your future depends on it - it does!
