THE COMPUTER CORNER

A Little Free Advice
by Mike Tanji, The Computer Geek

Even though I'm in the technology business, I am always amazed at the discrepancy between what computers are capable of, and what people think they are capable of (even though I shouldn't be surprised anymore). This article is dedicated to trying to clear up some of the biggest misconceptions most people have about computers.

* Computers only do what you tell them to do. Like any new piece of equipment you buy, you need to take a few minutes to read the literature, or take a class to learn how to use it. Time and money spent on education will spare you hours of frustration and save you countless dollars in the long run.

* A computer is a force multiplier. It won't replace people, but it can make people more productive and effective. Once things start getting automated, you will find that there is time for more important things. Making calls to potential clients, reading those articles in the trade journals that have been piling up on your credenza, spending more time at home and less at the office - all things you can do with the time saved by automating your operations.

* A computer is an equalizer. MegaCorp is on the Web - you can put your company on the Web. BigBucks Estate has a lobbyist to present it's views to legislators - you can send email to your (new) state senator. Conglomerate Inc. has a flashy color brochure it sends to customers - you can publish your own brochures that look just as good.

* A computer isn't a magic pill. Jumping on the latest technology bandwagon won't fix short-comings in your operation. An Internet presence isn't going to improve the bottom line if you've got problems with inventory, staff, or operating procedures.

That's my attempt to bridge the distance between the geeks and non-geeks in 400 words or less. If you have any computer technology related questions, I will do my best to answer them in a future Computer Corner.
