SBH, Production- Hawaii
Announce Trade Expo

The Convention Center

The November 17-18 Trade Expo will not be in the new State Convention
Center which opened in June. No local conventions or events are allowed
there. Locals are only allowed to pay for the center.

Save November 17-18, because those are the dates of the First Annual Small Business Hawaii The Trade Show, a unique small business expo and two-day event at the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall in Honolulu.

Our members spoke, and SBH listened! Members wanted a trade show in addition to the May SB on the Move expo, and you wanted something MORE AFFORDABLE. Now, SBH members will get both.

Mike Rossell's Production-Hawaii, Inc. will be the organizer of the event. This year's presenting sponsor will be chosen next month. SBH members will have first choice of locations at the first truly affordable major league busines expo. Detailed reservation information is given on pp. 6-7. SBH members can choose the best spots in the exhibit area and enjoy the lowest prices, if they act no later than July 31. See you at the show!

This is your show and your chance to exhibit to an enthusiastic small business crowd. There will be many special features, guest speakers and hands-on interactive exhibits.

1998 Aloha Festivals Embraces 300 Events

Aloha Festivals, the only statewide celebration in the nation, celebrates its 52nd year with some 300 events on six islands over a two-month period. Signature events include the Downtown Ho'olaule'a, Waikiki Ho'olaule'a and Aloha Festivals Floral Parade, which brings the aloha spirit to over 40 million television viewers across the U.S. Yet the Aloha Festivals umbrella also includes smaller activities-like the Kindy Sproat Falsetto and Storytelling contest, Ms. "Big" Big Island Contest and the Moloka'i Mule Run. Nearly 30,000 volunteers labor to stage the events, which are attended by nearly one million people. Aloha Festivals was created in 1946 as Aloha Week to help preserve Hawai'i's island traditions and honor its cosmopolitan heritage.

The festivals are funded through appropriated funds from the Hawai'i State Legislature, corporate sponsorships and private donations, as well as through the sale of Aloha Festivals ribbons and other merchandise. The Aloha Festivals headquarters may be reached at (808) 545-1771 or toll-free at (800) 852-7690. The mailing address is P.O. Box 15945, Honolulu, Hawai'i 96830-5945.

HEA Publishes Book on Governor Quinn

The Hawaii Education Association (HEA) recently published, No Ordinary Man the story of William Francis Quinn and his role in Hawaii's history, by Mary C. Kahulumana Richards.

The book is available from the HEA office at discount to SBH members. Telephone 949-6657 for more information.

Bill Quinn was Hawaii's last appointed Territorial Governor and the first elected Governor of the State of Hawaii. In this unique capacity, Quinn brought military experience and a Harvard law degree to Hawaii at a time when the Territory was recovering from the trauma of WWII. Quinn was also the last elected Republican Governor in Hawaii (1960). The author chose a friendly, intimate approach to the Quinn era which highlights the Governor's devotion to his task as a politician and a public servant. This is a good book for the '98 political season!
