About Internet Radio Hawai`i

Internet Radio Hawai`i began as a beta test to see what the beta of RealAudio's 1.0 voice-only streaming audio software could do. I began fiddling with it in May 1995. I discovered a few special recording tricks which made even RealAudio 1.0b a possible means to an end. The first thing that dawned on me was that I got better sounding quality out of RealAudio 1.0b than a shortwave listener gets with even the best rig. I then burped up the idea to create special internet only Hawaiian music and news shows. (Musta had something to do with my previous 19 year radio career) I thought this would be a good way to promote Hawai`i and a good way to reach out and allow displaced Hawaiians and would-be Hawaiians a chance to touch home - to have a taste so to speak. I got excited about the idea of playing some of my favorite music for you with you being on the other end of a computer connection in your home or office. Somewhere along in the next couple of days I thought of the name Internet Radio Hawai`i and ran down and registered it as a tradename and trademark. June 5th, 1995 I put up my first real show. I think it was 30 minutes and it didn't have a name really and then I posted to a few newsgroups and put a link to it off of the H4 home page and a few brave souls tried it and liked it. Within a few more days the RealAudio folks were all over me wondering how I had made music sound listenable on RA 1.0b?!

Since then almost every Sunday over the last seven years have been devoted to IRH. I have fallen in love with it. I am consumed by it. Producing Music To Cruise By programs has allowed me to get back to enjoying music and programming -to get my yahs yahs off. It allows me to do things my way, the way all radio should be but won't ever be ever again. IRH is radio at its basic best for Internet...no BS, no song research, no automation - no flash cards...just me 'n you and the tunes and stuffs and our ability to interract with each other by email or forum messages. IRH is a real vibrant partnership between you and I. You and some of your fellow listeners were the first in the world to help support any such an online project both spiritually and financially! And you continue to to do your part by listening and sending in donations to help keep IRH alive and progressing forward

IRH programs used to be a half hour, then an hour and now are 90 minutes or more each week. They generally appear online late Sunday Hawai`i time and they stay up online for several weeks. Many of you utilize the RealAudio Player Record option and download the shows to your computers so that you can listen to them several more times. One of you even tapes the show onto a cassette and listens to it while negotiating thru the London rush hours. As of 2/15/00 at 10:30 pm HST - I am happy to point you towards irh-Live!
