I thought about shooting off the jetty again but then thought about the Duke!
Yes, the totally inadequate dc50 and built in flash was all I had to work with...there was no place to run a hundred fifty foot electrical cord for the white lightning....but was fun just the same...
I almost got arrested...Officer Suzie spared me...
Actually NOT! but the extremely lovely and vivacious Officer Suzie Moniz of HPD did let me borrow her flashlight to set the level on my tripod cause I had brainlessly left my flashlight on top of my car in the Honolulu Zoo parking lot...she also graciously let me pretend I was being arrested....and jokingly did offer her handcuffs...ah a good Portagee Girl ;)
My friend Rolf Nordahl, from the MacMouse Club (www.macmouse.com), who lived next door to and saw Duke many times while a kid, graces the base of the statue...a few passers by ambled by and we had no moon....
Rolf shares his favorite Duke Kahanamoku story...
I grew up in Kahala, a residential neighborhood just beyond Diamond Head in Honolulu. The house belonged to a woman who lived in Beverly Hills. Her grandfather started the May Company and owned a lot of downtown Los Angeles real estate. This lady used the house in Kahala (right on the water) for two weeks each year. My mom was her housekeeper and we lived on the grounds. For fifty weeks a year, the house was "ours".
Duke Kahanamoku lived just down the street. His wife, Nadine and my mom were friends and we were often each other's homes...
My favortite Duke story relates to long boards and short boards. It was the mid-sixties and short borads were coming into fashion. Duke, of course, was a long board surfer.
"They're missing the whole point", Duke said. "Zig-zagging back and forth and pulling out of the wave after a short ride; that's not the way to surf. What ya do is paddle way outside and wait for the biggest wave. Then ya ride it all the way in to the sand. Ya gracefully jump off your board, pick it up and walk up to the wahines that have been watching you. Ya gotta talk to 'em if ya like put inside."
Oh, and a funny true story from the Equinox Shoot - the flashlight.....
I left my rubber flashlight on top of the car, drove home with it up onto the highway and up and over and down the Ko`olau Mountains in the rain and found it sitting there when I pulled into my garage...wow!
