I'm Richard Vallon, a professional photographer in New Orleans. Ray Broussard and I often work together. Ray is my technical expert on QTVR and I frequently advise him on photography and lighting matters.
I'm currently documenting the New Orleans Convention Center Phase III construction in QTVR. When complete, the building will have a continuous indoor space nearly one mile long. I've used Andrew Nemeth's PanoScrl2 Java Applet (www.NemEng.com) to display these panoramas on 36 inch monitors. Even though this Applet does not remove the distortion of a 360 degree photo as you rotate the image, it does allow very big images to display and scroll rapidly onscreen with a 200 MHZ Pentium machine and IE. His new Java Applet project, CylPan does correct the distortion. It will be available commercially in the near future.
The image I have contributed is of the interior of the Cafe DuMonde. The typical New Orleanian has never set foot in this part of the Cafe, as the area outside under the patio awning is the "southern" gentile place to enjoy your coffee and beignes ( doughnuts ). Ray contributed the panorama of the outside patio area. Cold weather? Do not worry, gas fired infra red heaters keep the locals warm on the worst of days. It's very rare to be cold in New Orleans...
