Kawainui Marsh

Kawainui Marsh is a huge wetland area just mauka (mountainside) of Kailua town. It was this marsh that overflowed after heavy rains in January 1988 and flooded a great deal of the lowland side of Kailua. Since then the Army Corps of Engineers have made sufficient improvements to keep flooding from ever happening again. (we cross fingers).

My thanks to the model airplane club for giving up about ten minutes of their flying time on Saturday Nov. 30th. In order to access a vantage point kind of in the middle of the marsh, I had to cross through their flying zone. As you can see being in the middle of the marsh affords an interesting perspective of the Ko`olau mountains and Mt. Olomana as well as a feeling of being lost in tall grasses and weeds which are 7-9 feet tall.
