TV NEWS & PRIME TIME COMMENTS

"KGMB's evening news seems just a little too "touchy-feely" for me, especially with all their "cute" comments regarding some stories, but Niel Everett seems to be the up and coming sports guy that I'll watch over Robert Kekaulua. Channel 2's World Report is very good compared to the National network news that's sometimes hours old and not as comprehensive."

-- David Mougin

"I don't generally watch any of it. Most of them do little more than repeat what was in the local newspaper, or something they found in a mainland paper. And most of them seem to be incompetent! We sure have second-rate news teams here ."

Regarding the show Wind on Water: "It was an OK show. Not the kind to grab you. And the acting was kind of flat. Still, I think it should have had the time to find its audience."

-- David Jones

"Most of it appears to be biased (like the local papers) so I only watch it a couple of times a week."

-- Earl Batteen

"Lately, i've enjoyed watching Channel 9! Their newscast has improved within the past year. I especially enjoy watching Kim Gennaula's weather segments. Also, their new graphics & theme music is really cool! I occasionally watch the other stations as well. When I have time in the morning, I generally watch the Channel 2 Morning News. It's really unfortunate that none of the stations have a mid-day newscast. I think it would work well with island viewers! Also, a Sunday morning newscast, from like 7-8am, would be great too!"

"I saw the first two episodes of 'Fantasy Island', and I really enjoyed them. The storyline was not something I had anticipated, in comparison to the original show. It's a rather unique show!"

-- Gary Santos

"Dan Cooke and Paula Akana are also very good anchors. Joe Moore is the worst - he needs to learn how to report the news instead of constantly giving his own opinions. Overall, I think Hawaii's local news is better than that in most cities."

-- Jason George

"I've been an extra on Fantasy Island and it was good to see the hard work put in by the people involved. crew and cast were very excited and dedicated. the problem with most shows is not the workers, but the writers. how did anyone think that non-stories would make it on prime time television anymore. It worked in the 70's, but somehow hasn't translated into 1998. I wish them well, it is a great vehicle for other productions here and for the visibility of the state."

-- Mel Martinez

"IMNHO, too much TV news time is given to weather, especially KGMB and KHNL. Unless it's a hurricane or some other serious weather event, I think it's a big waste of time."

-- Charles Oliva

"Where's the tv relay list? you can now watch K5 on K44QQ in Kaneohe. and What happened to KITV's channel 6 in Kailua-Kona? "

-- Fred Andaya

Editor's Note: Will update relay list soon. KITV's Channel 6 was being leased from KAAH 26. I believe the transmitter has been returned to KAAH.

"Both of these shows are pretty ridiculous. They are totally marketing off the islands. Typical TV fluff. I only voted for Wind on Water due to friends working on the production. Otherwise, it's a no go. A waste of time and money. Even though there is talk of economic value for the islands, that really is not the case. Film crews tend to make a mess of things, how do I know? I work on film and tv productions here in Calif. I caught Wind on Water while on the Big Island last week. Nothing else."

-- Kekai

"I enjoy the way Jade Moon, Rusell Shimooka and Kim Jenalla interact with one another. They present an air casualness and professionalism while sharing the daily news. They cleverly respond to eachother's lead making the news interesting."

-- Lehua Kai

"I really wish the network stations in Hawai`i didn't abuse the timezone difference and insert so many commercials during prime time. The 10pm news broadcasts usually end up beginning at least 10 minutes late! Watching anything on cable after a network station show usually means you miss the beginning of the show.

Still saddened by the loss of Robert Kekaula from News 8, but I will not watch KITV news just for him."

-- Todd

Editor's Note: KHON and KITV have since gone to "clock time" meaning that prime time programs including the late news start on time.

RADIO STATION COMMENTS

The following comments are in regards to the state of Hawaii radio. Again email addresses have been stricken to ensure readers' privacy. The views of the opinions stated below are not a reflection of the publisher and web host of these pages.

"The thing I hate most about radio stations in Hawaii is their obsession with chatty DJs. Chatty DJs are the first thing that turns me off about a station. (The next thing is a complete lack of originality in their programming - if I can predict what song they're play next ... ) They're all trying to imitate Perry & Price, who aren't worth listening to, either. All a DJ needs to do is play the right music, announce artists and titles (title of CD or album is nice, too) and play enough commercials to pay for itself."

-- David Jones

"Country is cool. And funny how "cool" kids like to think of themselves as different from the mainstream, yet they all listen to the same crap because it's acceptable to their peers. There's no good alternative station, which has forced me to listen to country all the time. And what's the deal with Xtreme radio? They play "cool" music from a variety of musical tastes and hope that youth today have no personal preference and will buy into it just because it is deemed "cool". Unfortunately, it's working."

-- May Cheng

"Radio is not dead, but it is still a momentary medium. most people listen as a matter of fact. in the car, at work, at the park. Radio in general is for hearing, not listening. There aren't enough people listening because radio is not alone as an information medium. It is useful and powerful, but only if listened to."

-- Mel Martinez

Regarding KAIM's Christian Music format: "They always play Christian music and always shares the message of God's love for us."

"There are a lot of radio stations in this state and surprizingly, there is a radio station down the road from where I live (KUAI)."

"I love this webpage. Mel, you always keep your viewers informed about important stuff that's happening in local T.V. and radio stations."

-- Jenai M. Fierro

"(KLHI) plays the music that I like. Comes in only part time but worth it with the demise of KDEO and the format change of KPOI."

-- Jerry Byrne

"KUMU AM 1500 is a great radio station because I love to listen to the original hits of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. I hope that a radio station that is dedicated to playing smooth jazz favorites returns to the radio. Right now, I have to wait till Sunday evening to hear the smooth jazz favorites. I still remember when KUCD FM 101.9 used to play the smooth jazz favorites. I would be very happy if a radio station that plays smooth jazz 24 hours a day returned to the radio."

-- Ivan Badgett

"Hawaii needs to keep up with the mainland music scene. Hawaii needs a radio station that plays true hip hop and "hard" rap. Radio stations should think about putting more concerts together."

-- Lehua Kai

"Top notch National Public Radio programs like Morning Edition and wonderful musical programming like Performance Today. Thank heavens for KHPR bringing us National Public Radio."

-- Margaret

"Plays mellow and relaxing music. Provides updated news at the top of each hour. Great aerial traffic reports from Buzz Bennett. I especially like the evening show 'Love Songs on the Krater'."

-- Nagaoka

"I really liked listening to 101.9 but they play too much INXS and the Fine Young Cannibals, groups that belong in the past."

-- Laureen Takeuchi

"I-94's Wake Up Crew is really funny! I enjoy starting my day with them. They also play great music throughout the day. Lanai also has a great afternoon show. The are truly 'da best'!!!"

-- Sharon Santos

Regarding KCCN FM 100: "They play a mix of music you generally cannot listen to anywhere else in the world. In comparison, you can hear most of what's played on KSSK, I-94, KRTR, etc. in the continental US."

-- Todd

"Have to keep scanning stations ever since radio free went off the air. 102.7 has been sliding further downhill ever since. country???"

-- Baron Fujimoto
