Big Island to Get Public Radio

The eastern and southern half of the Big Island will be getting a new public radio station. A group known as the Big Island Friends of Public Radio have received more than $50,000 worth of hardware to establish a transmitter site in the Hilo area that will reach the population of the region. The group has been actively raising funds for the station this past year. The new station will more than likely repeat the signal of KHPR/KKUA which broadcasts out of Honolulu. The station already reaches the north and western regions of the Big Island from its Maui relay.

Channel 2 News Still On Top

It was recently reported that KHON's nightly newscasts at 6 and 10:PM continue to lead the local news ratings according to the last Nielsen book (November 1999). The popular newscast anchored by Joe Moore has been a perenial favorite for many years despite the station's change from NBC to Fox several years ago. The #2 station in the market continues to be KITV Channel 4, whose newscast is currently anchored by Howard Dashefsky and Paula Akana. Rounding out the ratings were KGMB's Channel 9 News and KHNL's Hawaii News 8 at 3rd and 4th place respectively.

News 8's Dan Cooke will probably be returning to KITV 4 by February. Meanwhile KHON will be adding a weathercast to Moore's Channel 2 News. Model Trini Kaopuiki is set to do weather at Channel 2 starting on January 5.

Shock Jocks Profiled in Honolulu Newspaper

Honolulu's morning "shock jocks" were profiled in this past Sunday's (12-19-99) Honolulu Advertiser newspaper. The feature length article profiled KPOI morning man Jeff Blazey who brought mainland style "shock" to Honolulu's airwaves by conducting outlandish promotions and interviewing porn stars on the air. Blazey was one of the handful of jocks profiled in the article, among which included KXME's Kid Leo, Jimmy the Geek and Blunt as well as more subdued Paul Ogata of KRTR radio. The morning drive time is acknowledged as radio's prime time which can command large advertising revenue for popular morning show radio teams.

The article written by Suzanne Roig is found in the Island Life section of the Sunday Advertiser.

J.P.Muntal Quits Hawaii Public Radio

Eight-time international award-winning producer J.P. Muntal announced his unexpected departure from HPR last Thursday following what he called "a wonderful chance at making a difference on Hawaii's airwaves for more than five glorious years."

Muntal who was to host a morning show on HPR's KIPO beginning Dec 6 cited what he called an inadequate allocation of resources for the project.

Asked if his departure from HPR had been amicable, Muntal said "If positive changes are to happen, they will happen under the current management team. It may take time and research. I wish them the very very best."

Muntal is currently writing a book of his life in radio and can be reached at 808 234 -0175, cell 223 7774.

KAPA and KLUA Simulcast Big Island Morning Shows

In order to bring the "Two Guys In The Morning" program to the Kona side of the Big Island, KLUA FM 93.9 in Kona now simulcasts to KAPA-FM 100.3 in Hilo from 6:AM to 10:AM Monday through Saturday. At the 10:AM conclusion of the show, KLUA rejoins sister station KPVS FM 95.9 in HIlo with the "KISS" format simulcast.

"Two Guys In The Morning" featuring Lyman Madeiros and Iaukea (Eye Ow Kea) Bright have become a refreshing and enjoyable listening experience for Big Islanders. Their low key and personable chatter is a welcome compliment to the wide variety of Contemporary and Traditional Hawaiian Music heard on the station.

Correspondent Charles Boehnke says that this is what "Modern Hawaiian Radio should be!" Listeners are urged to give the program a try.
