Longtime NBC-TV affiliate, KHON Channel 2 and its neighbor island satellite stations switched to the Fox network on January 1. KHON which was bought more than 18 months ago by a subsidiary of the Rupert Murdock's Fox Television Network, is now known as "FOX 2: HAWAII'S NEWS CHANNEL." Meanwhile over at KHNL Channel 13, the big switch in network affiliation will take place the same day, as KHNL becomes the new home of the NBC network. The station which recently has been billing itself as "HAWAII NEWS 8" (8 being KHNL's position on Oahu's Oceanic cable channel line-up) will now be billed as "NBC HAWAII NEWS 8." The network changes have prompted a scramble in the local news race, with several stations increasing their local news coverage. KHON's top rated newscast featuring Hawaii's longtime #1 anchor Joe Moore will remain essentially intact, except that both the early and late evening news shows will be expanded to an hour-long format. Kirk Matthews will be anchoring the new 5:30 news on KHON, with Moore remaining at the helm at both the 6 and 10 o clock broadcasts. The morning news show with Leslie Wilcox and Ron Mizutani will be expanded to run 2 1/2 hours each day. Over at upstart KHNL News 8, the station will add a new weekday morning news featuring anchors Lee Cataluna and Guy Hagi. The new program will be called "NBC Hawaii News 8 Today". The new morning news will lead into the NBC "Today" show every weekday. News 8 will build their 5, 6 and 10 o clock weeknight news shows around the new NBC line-up, including the "NBC Evening News" with Tom Brokow, which will be sandwiched between the 5 and 6 o clock local news. News 8's 10 o clock newscast will probably benefit the most from the strong NBC network lead-in programs such as "E.R.", "Seinfeld," and "Law and Order." KHNL's News 8 9 o clock broadcast, which started the station's foray into the local news market last April, will only be broadcast, on KHNL's sister station, UPN affiliated KFVE. Both KHON and KHNL plan to launch their network switches New Year's eve with gala celebrations on both channels and airing of their respective new network's holiday offerings. At KITV Channel 4, Hawaii's ABC affiliate, the big change occured in late November, when former KHON weekend news co-anchor, Howard Dashefsky jumped ship to anchor Channel 4's weeknight 6 and 10 o clock newscasts. In addition to that change, KITV will also be entering the morning news sweepstakes with their own broadcast titled "Goodmorning Hawaii" featuring veteran newsman Paul Udell and co-anchor Kathy Muneno. What does the affiliation change mean for Hawaii viewers? Besides the obvious increase in local news coverage, basically all NBC network shows that were seen on KHON will now be on KHNL. Fox shows previously seen on KHNL will be on KHON. Most of the effected network shows will air at their usual days and times but on the different stations. The stations' local and syndicated television programs like "Wheel of Fortune," "Jeopordy," "Oprah," "Geraldo" and others will stay where they are. The only change will be "Hawaii Stars" moving to KITV Channel 4. A complete listing of both Fox's 2 and KHNL's new line-ups were recently posted in the Honolulu Advertiser, and will also be published in the usual weekly television guides published in the Advertiser, Midweek magazine and others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- CAPTAIN IRWIN LEAVES HAWAII'S RADIO AIRWAVES Longtime traffic watch reporter "Captain" Irwin Malzman left Hawaii's airwaves on Friday, December 29. Captin Irwin's traffic reports were recently caught up in a cloud of controversy when it was reported that a number of radio stations were taping his reports and not airing them on a timely basis. Malzan's traffic reports were subsidized by the State of Hawaii's Department of Transportation to a tune of $190,000 a year. The reports were "given" to any station in Hawaii that wanted to air them in exchange for airtime of several state sponsored public service announcements. At last report, Malzman was looking into the feasibility of taking his service to the private sector. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- OCEANIC CABLE HIKES RATES AGAIN For the third time this year, Oceanic Cablevision, Oahu's dominant cable service provider will be hiking its standard service subscription rates. The rate hike will effect all customers who get Oceanic's standard service. The monthly rate hike will be $2.03. Current standard service charges are $20.84. On January 1st the new monthly charge for standard service will be $22.87. On top of the rate hike, Oceanic will be increasing the state's cable franchise fee from the current $1.53 to $1.72. The state franchise fee which is essentially a tax, is billed to all subscribers to help subsidize government and community programming on 4 public access channels, which Oceanic must provide to viewers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- BREWER'S KKOA FM SLATED TO BE ON AIR JANUARY 1ST As previously reported, Hilo will be getting a new country music FM station in the near future. KKOA at 107.7 on the FM dial is slated now to start broadcasting from its Volcano based transmitter facility on January 1st. In the meantime, KHLO AM 850, Hilo's country station recently switched its format to "Goodtime Oldies," which is a mix of top 40 hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Announcements for KKOA have been aired on KHLO. Both stations in addition to KKBG FM are owned by the Brewer Company. - from C.B. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- OCEANIC DIGGING AROUND O`AHU NEIGHBORHOODS Residents of Pearl City are among the latest surprised by the appearance of five-foot tall, metal boxes in front of their houses. They're dubbed "energy boxes," part of a major upgrade project by Oceanic Cablevision. In addition they're often guarded by a pair of bright yellow concrete poles. The company, the largest cable television provider in Honolulu, hopes to eventually bring a wide variety of services -- including more channels, interactive games, internet access and eventually phone service -- to O`ahu homes. Oceanic plans to install up to seven hundred of the tall, high-voltage towers across the island. In areas with utilities strung overhead on poles, the needed boosts to Oceanic's system can be provided with smaller underground units, company spokesman Kit Beuret explained. In newer communities, however, the boosters have to stand above-ground. They sit in the resident-maintained easement between the sidewalk and roadway. Beuret said they're five feet tall because Hawaiian Electric requires that the electric meter embedded in the tower be four feet above ground for convenient reading. The boxes are also now appearing in Central O`ahu neighborhoods. - from Ka 'Upena Kukui, the Hawaii NewsList ------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW WEBSITE FOR ASIA NOW, KUMU RADIO The Hawaii produced Asia Now television show is now on a new website.
