Survey Taken April 1 to May 15, 1996.
The following are results of an unscientific poll I conducted last year.
RADIO FREE IS HAWAII'S MOST POPULAR STATION
Radio Free Hawaii has been declared the winner in the recent Hawaii Radio & Television Guide Favorite Radio Station Poll. A totally unscientific survey conducted from April 1 to May 15 of this year attracted internet voters who took the time out to answer questions about what their favorite radio station is and which were their favorite morning radio shows. The survey was conducted through the Hawaii Radio & Television Guide survey asked for any comments that you may have about Hawaii's radio stations. Here are some of the comments I got from those who answered the question.
The answers to the survey questions were as follows:
1. During the course of the day, the one radio station in Hawaii that I most often listen to is:
RANKING CALL LETTERS NO. OF VOTES
1. KDEO 102.7 FM (Radio Free Hawaii) - 18 votes
2. KCCN FM 100 - 10 votes
3. KINE 105.1 FM - 5 votes
4. KHPR 88.1 FM / KKUA 90.7 FM - 4 votes total (3 for KHPR, 1 for KKUA which simulcasts KHPR's signal to Maui and Big Island listeners.)
5. The following tied with 3 votes each
6. The following tied with 2 votes each
7. The following stations had one vote each:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. In the morning drive hours (5AM to 10AM) which radio program or show do you most often listen to?: (23 voters did not answer this question.. of those who did, this is how the tally breaks down.)
The surprise result in this category is the popularity of NPR's MORNING EDITION which I have never seen ranked in the regular Arbitrons.
A total of 70 people participated in the poll.

COMMENTS FROM SURVEY RESPONDENTS
The following is a sampling of selected comments submitted by survey respondents.

Don't discount KTUH, which has great potential. Sadly, they haven't been able to increase their wattage, even though they've been trying for years.
Also, if KQMQ ever hopes to be truly competitive with KIKI (I-94), they need to move away from adult-leaning top 40 and look at moving toward a more modern rock-leaning format, similar to WHTZ-FM (Z100) in New York.
Finally, to anyone starting up a new station in Honolulu: the market is saturated as it is. We're going to see a further drain on advertising dollars. There just isn't enough to go around. Plus, the megaopoly of KSSK-AM-FM, KIKI-AM-FM, KKLV and KHVH is going to be potent.

Although I listen to most of Maui's rock stations (KMVI, KAOI & KONI) on and off, they all seem to be the same old dribble, and you can't distinguish between the the stations too much any more (except KAOI when it it running Oahu ads). Radio Free Hawaii is the most interesting, but I can't get it half the time because I'm on the wrong side of the island.

More people need to be turned on the depth, bredth, honesty, and touching humor of NPR.

I like KPOI because no other station consistently plays music I like. I like public radio, too, but only sometimes.

I wish KCCN would update their webpage. The latest listing are from last August. They embarrass themselves.

I really like Billy V and the Pau hana posse of KCCN. He's quite humerous and seems to have a genuine concern for his listeners.

Right now, I am in california going to college. I miss my radio free, that's for sure. I was up here when it went off the air last year, and I was sad, but then ecstatic when I heard it came back on. I go home in a couple weeks, and I am definitely going to listen to the radio!

The morning show with Rick Hamada and the other announcers are excellent...Tired of Perry and Price..and I don't want to start my day by listening to Linda Coble and her constant, irritating errors while reading the news!

I've been listening to a lot of Hawaiian music lately, particularly since I went through a semester of "World Music" Music 107 at UH. KINE comes in pretty clean in Manoa, but not so clear in Kailua.

I was so impressed with the Radio Free Hawaii format I'm starting a pirate radio station in Cincinnati based on their format!

Editor's Note: Pirate radio stations are not encouraged. You will get into trouble with the FCC.

even when I listen to m&b four is KCCN (?) 105.1, five is KHPR 88.1, six is The Edge 97.5. I click down top to bottom when a junk song comes on or its a commercial... I have the order memorized and all, sorted by which stations I'm most likely to eventually hear something I like.
