LOCAL RADIO STATIONS AND MORNING SHOWS

Why don't we have a Country Western Radio Station on the Big Island? KKOA-FM dropped their CW format recently and even though it was a poor example and was all rock oriented "Hot Young Countrey" it still had some merit. I'd like to see a CW station with a wider range within the format. Not all listeners are fourteen years old.

-- Charles Boehnke, Big Isle, HI

I enjoy hearing the original hits of the 40s, 50s, and 60s on KUMU-2. The music I hear brings back wonderful memories. I am somewhat disappointed that KUCD is no longer playing Hawaii's Smooth Jazz. I hope smooth jazz returns on another radio station. I also wonder what format KBLZ is going to carry.

    -- Ivan Badget, Oahu, HI

Editor's Note: KBLZ became KXME playing contemporary hits.

I haven't been to Maui yet I will be comming the first week of Dec.97 for ten year annv. I listen to Kpoa and Koni 104.7 via the net I love the Kpoa because it play Hawaiian music. I love the format the DJ seem very nice and up to date on everything. I wish there were a local station to listen to on the radio like the Kpoa station.

    -- Jan Cansler, Oregon

I do not listen to the radio any more. There is no C&W music station or NPR on the East side of the big island. The rest are a waste of RF spectrum.

-- Joel Thompson, Big Isle, HI

KCCN is great, but why did they start playing music other than local artist?

    -- Jenel Yanagihara, Oahu, HI

LONG LIVE RADIO FREE HAWAII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    -- Darren Nakagawa, Oahu, HI

Sorry to see Mr. Kekaula in a bind, but I still thuink he is a classy guy. Although I like Rush, my favorite radio personality in Hawaii is De-Ahna Ray, who hosts a show on KWAI/KISA, but I must confess to some bias, as we plan to get married in the near future!

    -- Dan Pursley, Oregon

I like to hear the old Hawaiian music even if it's on the comupter.

    -- Lani Welsh, Nevada

1) I really miss Michael Qseng in the mornings!
2) I-94's Wake Up Crew sucks!!! They are so rude!
3) Cliff and Erika is okay!
4) I like Michael W. Perry, but can't stand Larry Price.

5) KQMQ plays the same music over and over again. They need a better music selection.

6) Favorite radio newsreader: I like both KSSK's Linda Coble and Krater96's Jane Pascual

    -- Laurence, Oahu, HI

I think Star 101.9 is a wonderful station, and I love the music. They should not repeat the same songs so many times, though. Variety!!! This station has quickly become my favorite, and I would hate to see it not make it...

I love your music!!!!!!!

    -- Marianela, Oahu, HI

couldnt honestly vote for any radio station because i only listen to cd's now. ever since the demise of RADIO FREE HAWAII that is. (102.7)

    -- Mark Y, Oahu, HI

Sure is nice having KPOA on the net via RealAudio.

    -- Randy Braa, Arizona

To bad for Radio Free Hawaii, but you could see it coming. They seemed to have strayed from there original plan, and became an alternative radio station. When it first started they truely played all formats, but toward the end, you seemed to always here alernative, and it would be rare to here any other type of music.

No matter what anyone says, "Mark & Brian" are the best morning radio team in Hawaii. I-94's "Wake-up Crew" is a close second. I can't even listen to "Perry & Price", they put me to sleep. Just a couple more quickies: 1-oldies-7.9 rules / What's up with "Wendy from Waianae", am I the only one who doesn't get it / "Cool 102" is better than Radio Free / lastly, when in L.A. listen to KPWR 105.9fm "Power 106" (including Power 106's morning crew "Da Baka Boyz"), you'll find out where I-94 get all, I mean all their ideas from.

    -- Russel Cabral, Oahu, HI

I miss Radio Free Hawaii(102.7). That used to be my favorite radio station before they went off the air in March. I never had to change the station because they had a wide array of music which fit my musical taste. Now I listen to KTUH or KZOO mostly, but I still flip through the stations all the time to find some thing I like. I never had that problem with Radio Free. I just kept it on 102.7 the whole time I listened to the radio. Morning, noon, and night.

    -- Ryan Miyashiro, Oahu, HI

Radio in Honolulu pretty much sucks. It sounds like a cookie cutter assortment of stations trying to sound like each other. Where is the creativity? KTUH is about the only station that even attempts to do something different. Only problem is they can't be heard over much of the island.

    -- Sandy Tremblay, Oahu, HI

I enjoy listening to I-94 on the way to work because it makes me laugh and it starts my day off with a smile.

    -- Sandy, Oahu, HI

I listen to kiki in the morning/afternoon and kxme at night I would like to hear a all rap station or half-hour program

    -- u neek1z, Oahu, HI

I do also appreciate KCCN AM as they play real Hawaiian music!

    -- Vernon Tom

I'm from the Mainland. So anytime I come to the islands. I like to listen to KSSK-FM in the mornings. And well into the day. I a hear the news from Linda Cobel. Who used to be in the Portland Ore Market years ago. That's a voice a can't miss on the radio. My favorite newscast during the eveing is KGMB newscast cast. For both 6 pm and 10 pm. One great thing about a Hawaii newscast. Mainly on Ahola Fridays. Is where the men wear a Hawaiian shirt. And the ladies are in a Hawiian dress. This is truly one of Hawaii broadcast true trademarks for visitors to see. While watch TV on the islands.

    -- Wayne Thomas, Washington

I-94 would be a lot better if there choice of songs weren’t so repetitive. They need to have more mainland appeal, their music is generated towards the local crowd and neglects everyone else.

    -- Yachi, Oahu, HI

LOCAL TELEVISION NEWS

Robert Kekaula committed an act of violence in the workplace. The judicial system is the proper venue to decide his punishment. I believe that because of his popularity, ratings danced in the head of KITV people, and they hired a man who should have been prosecuted. I don't care WHO they are - -role models should be treated just like everyone else when they break the law. Special treatment breeds contempt for a single standard of behavior.

Hurrah for Elisa!!!! Back where she belongs.

    -- Beverly Kai, Oahu, HI

Our family was in Hawaii earlier this year and fell in love with Guy Hocky who did the weather and traffic for channel 2(?)/NBC station in Honolulu! His dress, attitude, that big smile and the way he told us that "today is the day to go to the North Shore! Surfs up!! Awsome!!"

We miss seeing and hearing him! We really think that he's the best!!!

    -- Brian Rhodes, North Carolina

Although KITV 4 is ranked second in the Nielson ratings, I feel the station provides the most investigative news reports in the islands. It often "digs" for stories that are "exclusives." In my opinion, this is true news-gathering.

    -- Carina Tagupa, Oahu, HI

I wish the TV stations would provide better reception on the Big Island. They often suffer from Interference that their linking picks up even before they transmit it to their viewers

-- Charles Boehnke, Big Isle, HI

Other than news and TV Sci-Fi shows, I don't really watch TV very much. Too much violence and sexual themes for my taste. Thank you.

    -- Helena Hsu, Oahu, HI

I channel surf during the evening newscast. However, I think News4 is the best! They're very professional! There's nothing special about Joe Moore and his newscast on Channel 2. KGMB is okay, I prefer Tim Tindall to Russell Shimoka. Best weather anchor, Kim Gennaula (Ch. 9)! Best sports anchor, Shawn Ching (Ch. 4). Aloha...

    -- Jaysen Castillo, Oahu, HI

For your TV survey, you should have separate catagories for news, sports, weather and possibily other catagories.

    -- Jon Sobstad, Molokai, HI

Editor's Note: Great idea! Next year the survey will be split into a separate Radio and TV one taken at different times.

The printed guides to TV favor their advertisers and sponsors rather than presenting a complete guide. Not including the 'Olelo shows with the other channels is unfair to the readers. Also I have trouble finding air times for show that start before 7:00 am here.

    -- Kristine Bucar, Oahu, HI

1) Joe Moore is over-rated!!!
2) KHON needs to change that generic map they have on their set!
3) I like KGMB-9 News' intro right before the first commercial break! They have the best graphics!

4) Channel 2 News has has updated their graphics which looks nice too!
5) News4 needs a new set. They have the ugliest of the four news stations. I hope when KITV relocates, their news set will be first class!
6) I can't stand Robert Kekaula!!!!

7) I'm a bit disappointed with NBC Hawaii News8. Early in '96, they revolutionize the way tv news was broadcasted in Hawaii. Neat graphics, cool music, interesting stories. Nowadays, their newscast in no longer unique. They nix th 3-d virtual view weather forecast. Then they cancel the K5 news at 9. What's next? I'm glad KGMB brought back the virtual view forecast. Isn't it cool???

That's all I have for now. I think the tv news business is facinating!!! Thanx for creating this poll. I'd love to receive the results!!! Aloha...

    -- Laurence, Oahu, HI

Although I moved from Honolulu to Chicago in July of 1996, I've been back several times and always watch Channel 2. My favorite anchor is Leslie Wilcox.

I am very disappointed with how FOX News has developed its newscast -- it really doesn't fit into Hawaii's unique culture -- too fast-paced and sensationalistic.

    -- Malia Zoghlin, Illinois

Actually, my favorite news show is Brian Williams on MSNBC with a 1 hour news format. Locally I really have no favorite newscasts, but I watch NBC 9-10pm a lot, so I catch the 10pm News sometimes.

Court-TV has become my favorite daytime show.

-- Mary Lou Barker, Oahu, HI

I'm a news junky. I find KITV to have the best scoops on news, especially Keoki Kerr with city government stories.

Gary Sprinkle and Pamela Young at 5PM on KITV make watching fun.

    -- MaryAnne Long, Oahu, HI

One recent development that I'm happy about: KHWE (?) channel 14 now carries Warner Bros. shows from its network. This means new episodes of Animaniacs!

    -- Ryan Miyamoto, Oahu, HI

I'm glad they got Robert Kekaula off the air. He didn't come across as being very professional and he spoke too much pidgin and added too many mean comments. Maybe they should hire someone that has an actual degree. There are local Hawaiians out there that can give the sports broadcast in pidgin and doesn't have a degree. Why Robert?

Another thing, Heidi Umbhau has to do something about her hair.

    -- Sandy, Oahu, HI

KGMB9 News has really improved within the past few months, that's why I watch them now! I like the new weather tools & graphics they have. I like their opening with Na Leo Pilimehana singing Channel 9's theme,"One of the good things". NBC Hawaii News8 really "sucks" now. KHNL is no longer "unique". KITV is okay! Don't care for Joe Moore and the Channel 2 News. Thanks for letting me share my opinions!

    -- Stephanie Kim, Oahu, HI
