The Kona Coffee Story: Along the Hawai'i Belt Road: A new exhibit presents a unique look at Hawaii's coffee growing industry from the arrival of the first coffee plants in 1828 to the poignant stories of the Japanese American coffee pioneers living today. At the Bishop Museum, 847-3511.

Kaho'olawe: Ke Aloha Küpa'a i ka 'Åina: The focus of a long struggle to end Federal control of the island and its use as a military bombing site, Kaho'olawe has become a symbol of self determination for many Native Hawaiians. At the Castle Memorial Building, Bishop Museum, 847-3511.

Pyramid Rock Beach Bash `96: Professional and amateur surfing competitions include youth open (age 10 to 17) professional longboard and shortboard, men's and women's open surfing and body boarding. Dances We Dance: For its 32nd anniversary, Dances We Dance presents the stirring and exalting "Missa Brevis." This piece, first staged in a burned out church in post World War II Budapest, is about the will to survive. Tickets can be reserved by calling 537-2152. Communities Right-to-Know about Toxic and Hazardous Chemical Releases: Workshops focus on industry/federal agency reporting requirements for manufacturing, processing, or using any of 650 listed toxic or hazardous substances. Free, at Kailua Recreation Center, 6:30 to 9 pm.

Doze with the Dolphins: A family overnight adventure. Expect encounters of the wild kind as we explore Sea Life Park by twilight. Find out what the animals do at night. Take a starlight tour of the Park. Crafts, games, and midnight movies are all part of this family overnight expedition. Ages 6 and older. Adopt a Stream: The Waimanalo Watershed Council has adopted part of Kahawai Stream and will be cleaning it of debris and rubbish. You can pitch in and work on a part of the stream that you are interested in. With just a couple of hours work with friends and neighbors, you can really make a difference in the stream. Call the Waimanalo Watershed Council for more information at 259-7195. The stream cleaning will be from 9 to 11 am.

EarthFest `96: A spectacular conclusion of month-long environmental activities such as stenciling storm drains, cleaning streams, beaches, parks, and helping preserve hiking trails. Mayor's Sunday on Wheels: Come along for the ride! An off-road event on a wide dirt trail taking you through 5 miles of awesome scenery, and into lush valleys. Those who want more, can follow a Kualoa Hike and Bike guide for a longer ride to the back of the valley. Or come watch the final stage of the Hawaiian Mountain Tour, a world-class professional mountain bike race beginning at 12:30 pm. Live entertainment with Kapena at Noon. Health Fair: Sponsored by the Waimanalo Health Center: On hand to celebrate the renovation of the Health Center will be MC David D., Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewitt's halau, Miss Hawaii Traci Toguchi and others. Power Teens from Hale Kipa will perform skits about family violence. The School of Oriental Medicine will give an acupuncture demonstration. Food, entertainment, prizes, health education and fun for everyone! Waimanalo Health Center, 10 am to 4 pm.

On TV

On Target: A TV health show with a local touch, On Target is a 13 part series that deals with health issues in a way that we can understand. First and fourth Sunday of each month. KITV, 4 pm.

Kulaiwi: Hawaiian language lessons via Cable TV, with Kumu Ekela Kaniaupio-Crozier. Each lesson centers around a grammatical structure, beginning with a short vignette, followed by and explanation by kumu, drilling and replaying the vignette. An interactive hotline will allow viewers to ask questions and get immediate feedback. Lessons 12 through 24 will be aired each Saturday, from 10 to 11 am, Oceanic Cablevision 26.
