Park June

June at the Park

Registration is still being taken for the City and County Parks and Recreation Summer Fun programs at Waimanalo Beach Park and Waimanalo Gym. There is a $25 registration fee payable at registration and fees of $2.25 for each bus excursion and several small fees for admission to the Ice Palace ($5.50), Dream Cruise ($5.00), and the Honolulu Zoo (50cents). Families on welfare will receive a voucher from DHS that waives the registration fee. If they haven't yet received the letter containing this voucher they should contact their social worker. The Friends of Waimanalo have already volunteered to help defray some of the excursion costs. This generous offer should make the excellent programs more affordable to the community. Summer Fun starts on Wednesday June 19 and continues until August 6. There will be a free lunch program beginning June 24.

It is very important to register as soon as possible because our summer hire staffing is based upon our registration count. We have many excellent college students from the community who will be hired based upon how many children sign up. Please come to Waimanalo District park Gym or Multipurpose Building most weekday afternoons from 2:30 to 5 pm or call Grace Adviento at 259-8926 or 259-9106 for the Beach Park Program or Eric Bunyan at 259-7436 for information about the Gym Program.

Many of you have noticed the concrete pads behind the backstop at Waimanalo Beach Park. They are part of a cooperative effort to build dugouts and install bleachers at the lighted baseball field. Hawaii Job Corps supplied the labor, the City Parks and Recreation Department supplied the reinforcing bars and Friends of Waimanalo donated $1,200 for the concrete. The next steps are being arranged. The parks Department will soon move the bleachers onto the pad behind the backstops. Mr. Kawila Sniffen, a welder for the Parks Department and a Waimanalo resident, has already volunteered to construct the dugouts on his own time. Now we are searching for donations of iron pipes, roofing iron and chain link fencing to meet the City's specifications for safety, and this long awaited project can come to a successful finish.

Come to Waimanalo Gym on Tuesday and Thursday evening and see what the teens in the community are up to. There are ten teams from Waimanalo and Kailua in the Police Activities League / Parks and Recreation 18 years and Under Basketball League playing three games each night. Come see them in action--admission is free.
