Big Waimanalo Bash!

by Kevin C. Zane

Where will Willie K., The Ka'au Crater Boys, Augie Tulba, Titus Kinimaka & the Kauai Boys, Cyril Pahinui, Jan'e, and Theresa Bright be on March 23rd? They'll be performing at a benefit for the Oahu Youth Boxing Association at the Big Waimanalo Bash!, 9 am to 4 pm at the Waimanalo Polo Field. Along with great entertainment, there will be ono kau kau booths, craft booths, a hay ride, and boxing matches by some of Hawaii's youth, ages 7 to 17. Part of the proceeds will go towards funding a trip to Southern California; for Hawaii's youth to compete against other youth from Oceanside and Santa Fe Springs.

Other artists include some of Hawaii's finest entertainers: Tropical Knights, Del Besley, Norm Thompson/Bruda Norm, Cyril Pahinui, Tino Ibach, Titus Kinimaka & The Kauai Boys, Babadu and Keanohi, Ilona Irvine, The Martin Pahinui Band, "Maka'i" from the Honolulu Police Department, Tropical Wine, and Kamahao will perform throughout the day.

Special guests Dennis Alexio, Titus Kinimaka, Randy Rarrick and Russ Francis will speak on how their participation in sports has affected their lives in a positive matter, and to sign autographs. Cartoon characters "Sparky" the Fire Bee, McGruff, and the Sea Life Park Penguins and Dolphins will also be there for the kids. All kinds of foods will be there: from burgers and noodles to Hawaiian plate lunches, shave ice and hot dogs. Browse through the craft fair (start your Christmas shopping early), while the kids jump on a hay ride.

This special event will fund activities and programs of the Oahu Youth Boxing Association; including a special trip to Southern California. The trip will afford our boys and girls an opportunity to compete against others in amateur boxing from around the United States. Locally, the kids involved in this program come from all parts of Oahu: Waipahu, Waianae, Wahiawa, Kakaako, Palolo, Kalihi, Kaneohe, U.S. Army Youth Boxing, and Waimanalo.
