Honolulu Fire Department: Captain Harris reported response to 11 fires, 6 medical emergencies calls. The Safety Tip for February: Make sure there are two clear exit ways out of every room, and practice using them, especially if you have kids.
Honolulu Police Department: Officer Keith Vegas reported crime statistics for January. He noted that neighborhoods in Waimanalo are coming together to do something crime and drug use.
Resident's Concerns: Tony Gabriel of Saddle City Road expressed thanks to those who had assisted when the area was flooded, and disappointment at not seeing local representatives. Concern was expressed that despite the damage, this time we were lucky that no one was killed. The importance of having city and state officials meet with the community and finally deciding to share responsibility and see that something is done. A special meeting will be held Saturday March 2, at 9 am at the Waimanalo Library.
Public Officials
Representative Eve Anderson: Anderson reported: A meeting will be held on the Castle Junction Interchange at Kaneohe Elementary School on February 28 at 7:30 pm.
Those farmers on month-to-month lease must be certain their lease agreement is in place by June 30, 1996. DLNR is not supporting legislation that would extend the deadline to come to lease agreement.
Councilmember John Henry Felix: Councilmember aid Nancy Crittenden provided a report: CIP requests should be made to the Councilmember by March 13.
Unfinished Business:
Unisyn Biowaste: Update Report on Odor Mitigation and Required Permits: Matt Lyum of Unisyn reported receiving comments from DOH Solid Waste Branch.
The board delayed consideration of recommendations for the use of the $20,000 from the consent decree until its next meeting. The board will make a recommendation to the Dept. of Health.
Concerning Bill 11 to require wet food waste be sent to a foodwaste recycling facility. A motion to support the intent of the bill but that the bill not be passed in its present form, but include assurance that the facility can process the waste. The motion failed. A motion to not support Bill 11, passed.
New Business:
Fighting Crime in our neighborhoods: Field updated board on N.O.P.E. to Dope campaign in the Homestead area. A march on February 17 will show the community's support and provide information on how to get off drugs.
Vinnie Fukunaga reported on Farm Lots Neighborhood Watch. The watch will be mobile and cover hotspots and times.
Field reported the Beach Lots are organizing and will soon decide what Neighborhood watch activities to undertake.
Mayor's Legislative Package: Nick Houtman of the Mayor's office described six pieces of legislation supported by the Mayor. Motions on the following bills passed: To provide additional minimum security prison facilities at Waiawa Detention Center; To provide liability to the counties for injuries occurring at the beaches; To allow law enforcement officials to inspect licensed automotive shops; To make drug smuggling a Class A felony.
Ka Iwi Park Master Plan: A motion passed to support the City and State to work together with a community group to create a park on the Ka Iwi shoreline.
Bicycle Race: Board moved to support use of back roads for a bicycle race on April 28.
A Special Meeting of the Neighborhood Board will be held Saturday, March 2, at 9 am, at Waimanalo Library. The topic: City, State and private responsibility for maintaining streams, storm drainage, and irrigation ditches and reservoirs in Waimanalo.
