Welcome to Hawai`i's Plantation Village. The Village is the heart of the Waipahu Cultural Garden Park. Over 20 years ago, the friends of Waipahu Cultural Garden Park formed a non-profit organization with a mission to create a unique educational and cultural experience.
An exhaustive research and fund raising campaign over several years, resulted in the building of 26 structures, typical of a Hawai`i Sugar Plantation community.
These 26 structures are a combination of authentically replicated, restored and reconstructed buildings portraying the traditional lifestyles of plantation families. First person narratives along with hands-on demonstrations and cultural celebrations bring to life the workers' everyday experiences.
Most of the furnishings in the structures have been donated by descendants of plantation workers. The wooden structures include typical residential houses, out-buildings like cookhouses and bathhouses, a Chinese social hall, Japanese Shrine, a store, Sumo wrestling ring and a saimin stand.
Guided tours of the village are sceduled on an hourly basis through out the day.
Authentically illustrated in Hawai`i's Plantation Village Museum is the chronological history of the Sugar Plantation way of life in Hawai`i.
Telling the story of how a global work force created a thriving industry and cornerstone of Hawai`i's early economic base are over 3000 plantation era artifacts and a rare collection of photos. The collection spans from the mid 19th century to the present.
Settings depict the adaptation of many cultures that became the multi-ethnic communities we call Hawai`i. Nowhere else in the world does one find so many backrounds contributing to the truly integrated way of life we know today.
The Museum is open to the public Monday thru Saturday 9 a.m. til 3 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. til 3 p.m.
