Virtual Kailua

Kailua Bay as seen from Lanikai Point

All of these VR's (and the picture above) were shot with a Kodak DC50.

In order to see the 360 degree Quicktime Movies included in this tour you will need Quicktime 3.0 for Mac or Windows available for free from http://www.apple.com/quicktime

Each VR is about 260k to 296 in size (big ones and small ones are still the same file size but, the window size is smaller)...be patient unless you have the world's fastest connection...the images still require a bit of time to fully load - even after you see the opening view. Your cursor will change and you'll know that it's okay to hold your mouse button down and push to one side on the image or up and down. Enjoy the view!

To enjoy the VR's

Position your mouse pointer anywhere within the image -- the pointer's shape will change into a small circle. To cause the image to rotate, do the following:

To rotate right, drag the mouse to the right.
To rotate left, drag the mouse to the left.
To rotate up, drag the mouse up.
To rotate down, drag the mouse down.

You can also zoom in for a closer look:

To zoom in, press your keyboard's Shift key.
To zoom out, press your keyboard's Ctrl or Control key.

As this page unfolds, you'll be able to virtually visit the entire span of Kailua Bay which is around 3 miles long. I have prepared eight Quicktime VR Panoramas to take you the whole way from Lanikai to Mokapu Peninsula.

All us Kailua folk all real tickled that our own Lanikai Beach was chosen as the number one beach in America and that Kailua Beach was chosen the number two beach in America. These choices were made by a scientist named Dr. Leatherman, who studies beaches, their quality and erosion patterns. Wow, what a job he must have....imagine HAVING to go to the beach all the time....Hey Doc...if ya ever retire..I want your gig!

If you'd like to simulate being here...put on some shorts and a tee shirt, go barefoot, boil some salt water (for the smell), get the house up to about 85 degrees and put a fan on...;)

We'll travel northerly from Lanikai up the bay to the Mokapu Peninsula side with our Virtual Kailua Walk....

You can also Navigate the bay by map.

Position 1: We begin in Lanikai at around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday 8/17/96. The access way I used to get down to the beach is the very same one that I used when I lived in Lanikai. In 1979 I was lucky enough to split a rental house with 2 former disk jockey buddies...this is where I used to drop down to catch a tan, take nappies and go swimming all the time.

Hope you enjoyed your Virtual Walk along our bay. Perhaps someday you can walk it in person.

Kailua Elementary Schoolyard My daughter had to go return books to the library. I shot this while waiting for her to come out. This is Kailua Elementary School's front playground and parking lot off of Kailua Road.

Here's Kailua, Lanikai, Waimanalo, Kaneohe..... Shot this morning (8/24 @ 11:45) at High Res with the DC50 on loan again. Had a 4 meg memory card this time. This shot is from the highest of the two pillboxes which were built up on the hills above Lanikai in World War Two. It's now around 4:20 and still lookin' like this outside - Awesome day today!

Wanna peek inside the real H4? Ok..I warn you. It's about the size of a jail cell. It's kinda got that "used alot" look. It's a multi purpose room in an old single wall house.
